I have a theory!

The player is a clone 'reprinted' every time they die, with their consciousness uploaded. I reckon that the reason they are told to stay away from the tree is because the collector leviathan patrols there. The collector leviathan (living up to it's name) does more than just eat the player, but collects it's soul resulting in a permanent game over or canon failure, as they're not able to be cloned again.

Probably doesn't work gameplay wise but I think that would be sick if they're the big big bad.
