It has a little bit for some creatures iirc, the other day when I was working on setting up the creature spawns for a mod I was working on I came across an oculus that was comically tiny which I found amusing
It might've been one of the mods I had installed's fault but none of the mods I had installed (pretty much just modder utility mods, nothing with actual content) should've been able to effect creature size like that
Programming can do weird things sometimes though
I don't remember exactly but it was something like, each time you saved and reloaded, certain creatures would increase in size slightly
And it took a while to notice because people would be like "that's kind of big right?? ...no..."

My understanding for this bug was that the base ran out of power so it stopped holding the Tadpole in place in its moonpool. And then the moon pool just be an floating off into the sky exponentially.

Its a display of a real life phenomenon, when two populations of the same species get seperated by external factors into two different environments they adapt and evolve differently for those separate environments
Not to mention the purple is just more aesthetically pleasing for the jellyshroom caves
My thought is it could be the graveyard biome..? Would line up with Anthony saying the colour has changed, and how Obraxis has said the steam screenshot locations look very different now

When I play SN2 for the first time I hope to keep a physical log of stuff I find before I know what it’s actually called
my first impression is that maybe it's not underwater

Peepers are in the biomes surrounding the grassy plateaus (surprisingly not in the grassy plateaus itself though), the Oculus are most likely the descendants of a group of peepers that wandered further than normal and wound up stuck in the jellyshroom caves
The PDA entry in-game also says as such
Depending on how long ago the oculus adapted (presumably a very long time ago considering how evolution works), the planet's geography and the distribution of organisms was likely very different
If we go by the current geographical layout of the crater though, there is an entrance to the jellyshroom caves right at a drop off between the safe shallows and the grassy plateaus though
Honestly this cave opening here seems like a prime spot for a school of peeper to wander down and get trapped after some shifting rocks close off the opening

Tbh most of the Subnautica 1 biome concept art that isnt obviously directly linked to anything actually in-game is sorta just general alien ocean, seems less like concept art meant to portray specific biomes and moreso is just stuff meant to establish a general art direction for the more well defined environments

It seems to me like itd just be a weird flat area with a solid black floor that kills you for exploring, which seems pretty much antithetical to what actually makes the game and its environments interesting
Itd be a cool environment for a movie or a book or something, but for a nonlinear exploration game like Subnautica it doesnt seem like itd fit very well
i dont really like the idea of it attacking the player i just think the conept of a biome thats all one organism intresting

The colour palettes in each of them seem fairly cohesive within each image, like this one will have red/ purples, and pinks, this one will have biege, blues and oranges; this one will have yellow blue and pink. Second one seems sort of like what if everything was round. Third one seems like the most fleshed out as a biome instead of two or three plants/corals and some algea.

What would be cool if there was some blending between biomes, like the edges were far less distinct. With plants/corals/animals intermixing in an overlap area between the too. Like a colour blend, but for a whole pair/set of environments

If we're going to speculate about it I would say June, not May given how close we are to May (even though it could be two weeks from the date of the announcement as a minimum, I would think it would be closer to 3-4 in practice.)

From what I remember of the looks we've gotten so far it seems like there's a distinct purple area and a distinct orange area but the two have bits and pieces where they blend and mesh together so it looks like we'll probably get that in sn2

I mostly agree but I think these two are separate biomes from the rest of those screenshots, the fog here's more purple and there's a lot of that purple toothbrush looking plant in that image with the wreck

Sea anemones get their names from a flower called an anemone actually
The fog seems a bit too vibrant in the steam screenshot, but that can be hand-waved away as simply being an older version of the biome.
But sea anemones aren’t plants so there’s a difference

I hope to hear a little bit more on what constitutes a "sub-biome" and if that's more so a way for them to describe POIs within biomes or what. Had no idea the "bloom" stuff was present until it was mentioned here tonight, so that's pretty interesting/exciting.
At the time I also shared my own theory that would help sorta tie into what he's explaining.
Below zero had ssomething similar to regions, with the thermal area (Thermal Spires, Purle Vents, Tree Spires), land area (Glacial Basin, Glacial Bay, Arctic Spires) and crystal area (Crystal Caves, Fabricator Caverns).
You could even argue biomes like the Deep Purple Vents, Deep Twisty Bridges, and Lilypad Trench could all count as "sub-biomes"

I don't know everything abt how the sub biomes came to be but at one point we had some very large biomes that were kind of samey
Which could get a little boring and also made navigation difficult
So there was this big concerted effort to subdivide the biomes into smaller chunks that each had a lot of unique aspects
I'm not sure how much that's player-facing at all in the actual game, people might perceive them as totally separate biomes
But we're trying to build future biomes that way now, where we divide them up and try to give different areas some specific theming and differentiation

UWE is a much bigger studio than it was 10 years ago and the gaming industry isn't what it was 10 years ago, even early access releases need a certain level of polish nowadays otherwise people who don't understand EA will simply think its a bad product and it'd unnecessarily damage UWE's reputation and harm the game and the studio

POIs are more localized usually, like that big coral orb with legs in the steam screenshots (we call it the spider dome)
Although I worked on a POI that turned out to be so big it was practically a mini biome haha
Also caves I think we haven't historically counted as mini biomes but practically speaking they kinda are since they have a lot of different flora, lighting conditions etc

My understanding has been image A was part of the Jelly Plateaus. Hahaha. It's file name was "plateaus" afterall

Ive just been referring to them by their main color
Yeah, that was the plateaus biome, for a while it had a ZILLION plateaus so for the mini biomes push we kind of split it into thirds, left one third as-is, cleared one third a bunch so there was more open sand, and the last third got turned into a dramatic new thing
I miss my weird plateau with coral growths but the biome is way better now imo, easier to navigate, more memorable 😄
do we know who the two characters from the subnautica 2 trailer are?
We have certain names for certain biomes
All we know for sure is Coral Gardens, Sparse Plains, Jelly Plateaus, and Graveyard.

Like despite being incredible visually, they're some of the most aesthetically pleasing locations in the whole game, yet they only have 5 unique fauna.

The Glacial Forest is such a nice area that got screwed over by having literally nothing in it fauna-wise
At the same time tho... I can see why a lot of these were ultimately cut.
Sure the land sections were part of the advertising... But you ultimately only spend like an hour up there.

The big issue is that theyre all clumped together in a relatively hard to access area of the map in such a linear structure that you only really need to go there once

But you can tell a big problem was people just didn't like how it felt to explore the land segments,
I'm sure there's a chance we could've had more... But there were so many complaints.

Land movement definitely needed some improvements imo, the system worked for sn1 since there were so few land areas but in BZ the scale of the terrain just felt awkward to navigate with how small and slow you were
I think it turned out that wasn't for anything in particular, just another "random Arctic biome"

The blimp lookin fella
Weird idea: a creature that lives on land but hunts in the water, but is too heavy to swim. So when it dives, it can only glide downward when swimming and needs the help of something like thermal vents to get back up to the surface. Can hold its breath for a long time though

In my opinion it just doesn't feel... Like subnautica? And I'm sure that's kind of its goal but like, it just feels like it'd belong better in a different game. Or rather it feels like they've taken concepts that'd feel suitable in other games and just shoved it into SN1.
It's a lot more focused on "how much blood and gore can we put in subnautica" rather tan trying to tell a story that feels baked into the Subnautica world.
I think part of the goal was to make Subnautica but in a different genre, and I think they succeeded
And again that's not necessarily a flaw, it's just simply not what I'm looking for

I'm not sure what the intention behind it is, but I wanna just share some of my thoughts
for what I think it is, it perfectly fits subnautica. it's not supposed to feel like subnautica. it's supposed to feel weird and off. it does that perfectly well. "more blood and gore" would fit into another game "better" but then it'd be boring. for subnautica, it's being so far from the status quo, that gives it it's charm.
now, I personally do not really find the mod interesting, but I can perfectly see HOW one would be intrigued

I think the problem is they ordered it wrong.
It's not that the location was "cut", but rather it's evolved so much form how it was that it's basically unrecognisable.
And it makes sense too, all excess space is removed

Art is a very iterative process, and that goes for level design too. It's also important to keep in mind that a lot of the polish in that screenshot is visual, which carries over to any new location using those assets by the nature of level building

A Juvenile Angel Comb is where we get the digestion gene from.
The pda there says "gene donor found". It then goes onto explain what genetic modification is and why it's necessary. This is probably the first time we modify our genes. Would make sense the first gene donor is the one that let's us digest things.

So I guess my current theory is, the juvenile angel comb was captured by the colony survivors and stored in their laboratory that's deep in the sparse Plains, guarded by a collector.
We have to go there early on in game to get our digestion gene.
Alternatively, whatever this is that's been captured and stored in the lab isn't the juvenile angel comb, but it's still something we get new genes from.
