There's nothing wrong with making a freefloating portion of your base in cases like this, in fact there are reinforcement panels that will make your base more durable to make up for the lack of foundations

Imagine that there's an invisible bubble around every base piece, if that bubble touches part of the ocean map it won't let you put it down, but the bubble likes other base pieces so those can touch each other
