On my PS5 I don't get to use coordinates, so I used to use LifePod 3 as a stationary reference point to use with the compass. I would note direction, distance, and depth to specific locations (e.g. wrecks, other LIfePods, the islands, etc.).

Depends a little on how much base you plan on making perhaps. When I'm doing just a Moon Pool, I like to hang it off the edge of the safe shallows just above the mouth of the red grassy plateau; with my mobile vehicle bay floating very near – deep enough location to drop both the Cyclops and the Neptune platform without ever moving your mobile vehicle bay.

Here's my base location, and a path to the big wreck that often has these kinds of fragments and resources: thermal plant, moon pool, prawn suit drill arms, sometimes prawn suit grappling arms, Cyclops depth module MK1, gel sacs near anchor pods, rubies near smokers on other side of anchor pod ridge; other stuff.

I finally killed my first reaper a month or so back after years of avoiding them; took me forever to get the stasis field sufficiently around him in order to go to work on him with a thermal blade. I used the Aurora bow wreckage as a foil to spot him and maneuver to attack and evade.
