If you can't connect with a corridor, it might be because you have things built inside too close to what you want to build.

That can be a corridor, that can be something else. A hatch, another room, ...

For instance if your locker built inside is close to the same wall you want to build.

The cyclops is a Big Snack in my opinion, so I don't use it.

Luckily you can get all cyclops fragments from reaper-free areas: hull and bridge il mushroom forest (or sea treader's path), engine in crag field or near underwater islands wreck (also possible to find some fragments on south/west sides of mountain island or if you approach Aurora thrusters along the side of the ship there might be engine fragment or two before going to reaper territory).

Getting materials is all about picking good biomes to scrounge in. Quartz is in the safe shallows and kelp caves, but the easiest place to find it IMHO is the red grass.
