There are these wreckage bits (without actual explorable wrecks) called scatters in the safe shallows mostly, where you can find beacon fragments
For example, there’s one that has a trash can, one that has a some lab equipment, one that has a counter buried under something else that makes the counter hard to see, and there is one small wreck you can explore that’s next to a thermal geyser. All of these places potentially have beacons

That means I have a lot of time to explore underwater. I love it!
But you have to learn, and make a good habit, of always filling up both tanks or you’ll end up in a bad situation

you should see seaweed all the way to the surface, some of it has yellow seeds, you need some for oil, rubber. the seaweed can be cut later to make fabric.
you'll need copper, iron in large quantities which you can get by breaking up limestone pebbles which you can normally find in your starting biome if you're not in a giant algae biome, (if you are you'll have to walk around a bit to get out), gold, silver and lead from another type of pebble which you can find in the giant algae biome.

you can dodge attacks by moving laterally around the enemy and retaliate with a knife, for the starting creatures, you've even got one that runs like a warthog in a straight line before changing direction. for the explosive fish, just run, you'll see in the caves sometimes balls, which open with a very distinctive sound of flesh opening, and you've got the fish that will show its head, lure it out and then you can recover the powder to start again.
I'd advise you to find a spot a little way from the giant seaweed and make yourself a building tool, a beacon to mark the spot and make your base.

After beating Subnautica and Below Zero, my biggest gripe (which is small, as I loved the games!), was that they waited to long to unlock cosmetics for buildings overall.

Some days I liked exploring, other days I just wanted to build. I also found listening to the jutbox wonderful and felt below zero had better music. When I played in hardcore, I definitely expanded slower and wished I had more cosmetics to build earlier on those play throughs.

For example, when I replayed them, I found I would go straight for the things that helped me expand my base building footprint first, so I can slowly build up while enjoying the story line slowly.
