Define 'max efficiency'? You just hit bulbo tree with knife to get a sample which you can eat, plant to get another bulbo tree or put in bioreactor for biofuel. You can get something like 7 samples from one tree (last knife hit gives 2 samples)

Small difference in that gel sack spore cannot be eaten, instead of hitting with knife you pick the whoke gel sack up to eat (or use in crafting or biofuel). If you hit gel sack twice, pick it up and plant again, you can repeat to get as many spores as you want instead of the three you get if you just hit it with knife until it disappears
