Back in EA, every leviathan could have the infected status. I think because of Warpers eventually killing them, they removed that. But lorewise, every creature in the game ||except the Sea Emperor|| is infected. The blisters are part of a more severe, and therefore more infectious state.

I don't have nuclear yet, in fact I'm actually trying to build a base around there partly to make finding the fragments easier
Thermal's most significant handicap is that you actually need to have a heat source, there's a lot of them around the map but if you don't have one where you want a base you can't use it.
It's a little buggy and awkward to set up, I recommend watching a video about it.
But it has very big benefits. The material costs of setting it up aren't particularly high IMO. It's super low maintenance, doesn't require any fuel at all. Charges very fast, can be faster than nuclear with enough chargers, and works 24/7
I imagine that the increased fragment requirements, increased power needs, and the bends in Deathrun would impact nuclear more than thermal
