Context (why this film exists)

Kanye built a 35-minute short film to frame the album’s comeback arc after the 2009 VMA fallout. He literally said the phoenix parallels his career: burn → return better. That’s the key you use to decode everything else.
He directed it himself, with Hype Williams on script, Vanessa Beecroft shaping the art direction, and model Selita Ebanks as the Phoenix. The film pulls from Purple Rain, The Wall, Thriller, plus fine-art references (Picasso, Matisse) and Kubrick-style framing.
