This comes up about once a week. Birdwatcher was already nerfed once because it was way too over powered. The current version is brilliant at getting information. It's unnaturally strong and adds a ton of deceptive plays that I've yet to see many players take advantage of. Knowing one is in the game makes lying for the ducks more difficult.

It's one of the most hated birds but it is easily the most misused or misunderstood. I would suggest turning it off if your group doesn't enjoy it.

I've played the game for 450+ hours and gotten birdwatcher maybe about 40 times. Not one of those times have I been able to use the role for testing to see if a goose gets murdered in a room that the ducks don't know I'm watching. And in those 450+ hours I witnessed only 2 other players successfully use birdwatcher to witness a murder.

That said, I was able to catch a few ducks activating the light sabotage on Mother Goose (not knowing I was there) using birdwatcher. After a while, the lobby just figured out they needed to check the spot where I would hide as birdwatcher before they tried to activate the lights sabotage.

I could write an extensive guide on birdwatcher and how to use it effectively. Even the mere thought of the birdwatcher in the game makes being a duck slightly more difficult. It has inherent passive abilities. This is definitely a high skill-cap role that requires a lot of understanding of movement, map positioning, and utility for it to be effective. I agree in the hands of someone inexperienced or not high enough skilled at the game it could feel fairly useless. If you're using it solely to catch murders you're using it incorrectly.

Birdwatcher tip, Follow and double back, a lot. Follow groups of two or more players that looks like they are teaming up (they might not be, could be a duck stalking it's prey). Wait for them to go in a room, run past, use ability to spy on them. The amount of information you get is invaluable in clearing and voting.

You can do this multiple times during a game while still moving between tasks, watch who is getting voted and who is claiming what during meetings. Within 2 rounds the birdwatcher can gain enough information to basically break down a good chunk of the game.

Using it to snoop hiding spaces and vents periodically is a very basic use of the birdwatcher, it helps break alibis of players. You can say, "I saw you getting into a vent, you're not XYZ". You don't have to explain how you saw them (that will just get you killed).

Or tell someone you've potentially cleared (obviously risky) to shout out "I saw xyz through the wall go into a vent". And bait the assassin shot.

It's still true information

I've seen people just complain the moment they get the birdwatcher and then proceed to use them wrong in every way... I like that there is a role in the game that no one truly understands its power. When we introduce our sweaty classic mode with drafting I can guarantee the birdwatcher will have the highest discrepancy of win rates. Players who are good with it will topple the game for the ducks and secure significantly higher win rates over geese teams that avoid picking it because they don't understand it.

The ducks primary goal (if anyone listening hasn't figured it out yet) is chaos. Chaos helps win games because you're usually outnumbered. The only other player that benefits from chaos is the dodo. Too much chaos and they'll steal a victory.

Birdwatcher is definitely A tier or even S tier.

example; with 'perfect play' you can get the left 8 players in a 16 player lobby to vote themselves to prove they are not the falcon. you can do the same thing the next round with the right 8 players in the next meeting.

anyone that doesn't vote themselves is subject to getting sheriffed and/or voted in future rounds.

(this is an easy, cheesy way to figure out who the falcon is)

That kind of cheesing makes sheriff a truely overpowered role.

No one exploits that because it's sweaty and not very fun for the falcon.

if a duck doesn't skip during their time to skip during the falcon check, then it reveals there is a neutral/duck in that half of players that vote during the falcon check. That's unnecessary for a duck to reveal that information, and if a dodo does it, then it's just revealing more about which player the dodo is. If another neutral doesn't follow that scheme, they're likely just to hurt their own cause in winning.

A lot of the roles come down to timing, I feel. Falcon checks are also a timing thing.

If you want to do a falcon check at the start of the game, a lot of roles will refuse for a variety of reasons. I've even refused to comply when I was a goose in early game.

However, if you're down to 4 or 5 people, it's a lot easier to convince others to check for a falcon.

Similarly, a vigilante who fires in the first round or two is useless unless he has reasonable suspicion that they shot a bad target. Better to shoot later when there are fewer suspects, even if it means you might not shoot at all.

Unfortunately, we cannot control when bad actors enter a private game, but we do empower you by providing tools to help moderate these games. Conversations that go on in private games are private, we do not have access to the audio in any way. Players themselves ultimately have control of who enters private games. You can block or mute the relevant players in-game and use the in-game censoring filter. If you are the lobby host, you can kick the offending players, and if you are not the host you can ask the host to kick them. Players who get kicked will not be able to rejoin the game unless permitted back in by the host. If the player in question is the host themselves, you and everyone else bothered by their behavior should leave and form a lobby of like-minded individuals, with your own agreed upon rules. If no one else in the game agrees with you, you probably shouldn't be playing in that lobby anyways.

they are adding a feature to give reporter solo talk for 10 seconds, beyond that it is called Microphone Etiquette... It is NATURAL to talk over eachother in a setting like this.. Its natural to once you start talking to finish. Some people are louder than others and can easily overtake a conversation. We only have a slight color indication that someone is speaking. In face to face conversations most people in groups use visual tells to know when someone is about to talk. Blind people don't have this and have to learn how to sense stuff... Most people aren't use to 16 people trying to talk simultaneously.. Usually its small groups. Just be patient and try to get your lobby to use some etiquette. You can't help how they act though. Which is why we suggest you find likeminded people to play with.

Instead of only being able to check once per game, they can check once per round (a round being the gameplay between meetings). However, the detective can now only see someone as a demon if they killed in that round compared to current detective that can see if someone killed at some point in the game.

So it's a rework, not a buff/nerf. Yes they no longer have to wait until late game to use their ability, but it's now easier to get false-positives.

This is something we have considered, but have ultimately decided against. We have taken the stance that if you make a private game, you are responsible for moderating it. The host will have their own rules, and have the responsibility of kicking people who they feel are breaking the rules.
Public lobbies are different in that players don't necessarily know the people in the game they are joining into. Kids might enter a game and can be harassed by others in some corner of the map if proximity chat is on. If someone is being rude or toxic in a meeting, everyone can hear it and can block their mics and block them.

So why don't we just separate servers into kids and 18+? Because a 12 year old can check off a box that says they are 18, and we'd rather prevent the potential abuse and toxicity.

If you want proximity chat, make a private game. If you need players, find a private game in the #lfg channels or make your own.

I was thinking Chicken is like the Phantom in Among Us mods. Where after they die, they turn into a spirit and if they finish all their tasks before the game is over, they win. They just have to run around the map like "a chicken with its head cut off" looking for tasks. But if another player sees them and clicks their character, they lose.

It encourages a player to die to gain access to their own win condition (which is very easy and short)

and no one can do anything about it.

Both pigeon and vulture have a slight advance in that situation but it also makes it difficult to get in time and not get killed yourself

That's a risky play, you're relying on the assassin not knowing a few roles already, especially toward late game.

If the person you're accusing is vigilante or something and the assassin knows your or their role, one of you looks sus as the other is shot, prompting a mass voting on the remaining player. Two geese, one meeting. Nobody knows who the assassin is and presume them voted out, sometimes resulting in people claiming their role - another easy assassination.

Often times I'll use this to my advantage when I am assassin and somebody is accusing me, I'll deny, we'll bicker until voting time, they claim their role to prove they're a goose, I'll shoot some other player to make it look like the assassin took a shot but failed and suddenly everybody questions how the assassin failed, coming to the conclusion that the player accusing me is lying about their role and often it convinces enough players to skip or not trust the accuser.

I saw the 1.04 patch notes from 11/08/2021 that included the mortician goose, the detective rework and medium upgrade, but the 1.04 that was released on steam on 11/15 was just a small server side patch. Does that mean the patch notes were slightly leaked like 2 weeks ago except now theres a map rework to go with it? Will the detective rework and medium upgrade still be a part of it?

Yes, it is merely the intercom. It means a player in security has activated the intercom (after somebody who isn't a duck turned it on from bridge) - you can use it to locate a player at a given time. If you were playing in a private game with proximity chat turned on, you'd get a second or two where everyone can hear what you say.

Top lines include "There's a body in security" or " Hello, we'd like to talk to you about your car's extended warranty"

Every day at a certain hour (it used to be 6 am EST), the server resets. It also refreshes the pets.

It is apparently possible to keep the room through reset, but only if someone stays in the room while someone else leaves and rejoins the same code.

To be specific, the snoop is the role on maps where you can't move around the map, while the mechanic does hide and move around.

That's pretty much the difference. Snoop cannot move around the map using vents, only hide in them because they're actually cupboards. It's just a renamed mechanic goose for the Victorian era map Mallard Manor, currently the only map like this.

Which map? Because there is a known glitch where the roles are swapped, and you can get mechanic on Mallard Manor, and snoop on the other maps. They work how they are supposed to on that specific map, but the role names are different

Do you just not want it to change? I personally think that the change would bring more strategy to it, you now have to consider the fact that it’s only for the round. Plus, it will make detective less likely to confirm someone now that they have something to lose once assassinated

Here is my hot take on the Detective rework:

It will change the way the game is played with the detective around. Not better, not worse, just different. Yes, old detective you could have a situation where a duck and a goose accuse each other of a kill so the detective steps up and offers to detect. But you also had situations where people would blow their detective use testing the vig after the vig claims a kill.

New Detective makes it different. The geese won't have as good of an answer when 2 people accuse each other. But the Detective also can randomly check people each round, provided the round has been going long enough for someone to have reasonably likely killed. Have you been with someone a while and a second person just walked up and started hanging with you? Maybe they're a duck trying to establish an alibi before the body they left behind is found. Check them.

I find this a very interesting aspect of the game. Oftentimes I see neutrals who decide they're not gonna win just sort of pick a side and then specifically work against their own win condition in order to help that side win. It's neat.
