I learned in middle school when I couldn't afford a flute and had rented it

once I stopped going to band classes I couldn't afford to buy a flute myself and the flute I had was rented from the music department

so by the time I wanted to start again I couldn't really remember how to play it

I desperately wanted to play the saxophone as a kid, but I had asthma then, so the 'rents exercised their veto. I begged them for a violin but we couldn't afford it because my sister was renting a flute.
