The way early testing usually works is you will be notified that the server will be up for a specific amount of time, and you will be able to play during that time. Keep in mind, as they make improvements to the game, your characters will likely be deleted and you will need to start fresh.

this is something i expect is happening from plenty of folks even without prodding, which is why i try and avoid even offhand comments or discussion of the game for the moment. the game will arrive when it's time. and candidly, even if you can glean a mechanic or something existing, by the time we hit a more open test phase or even release, it might have changed significantly from these early glimpses.

It only contracts you to not discussing details about the playtest and whatnot. from what ive seen, the Palia one does not keep you from disclosing you are part of the playtest (theres a whole role). So stating "NDA" as a form of a response to a potential playtest question is perfectly acceptable

It's probably because things will be very different from the final game, and there will be a lot of bugs and bad features. And they shouldn't be judge or reviewed over such things early on. We know that an alpha is supposed to be like that, but I can betcha that a lot of people don't understand that. Not only that, but in the early stages, a lot of stuff can be stolen from them, as well. Also, datamining can ruin surprises and set unrealistic expectations.

It's not about hiding stuff. This phase of testing is where they decide critical details of gameplay and QoL. If, let's say, you can currently not make chairs in game, and someone gets upset and tells everyone this chairless game is full of suck, then during the next phase chairs are added, the overall game experience changes. They keep quiet because the game isn't finished and things will be different at launch.

from my own previous experience I'd agree this is probably the primary reason most games use one. They don't want public image to be damaged by unfinished content, because stuff may show up on Twitter or something and people may not understand it's unfinished or in-development, they think it just looks bad.
