AQ20 and AQ40 are both raids in the game. In order to unlock the gates to access these raids, the playerbase had to fight off swarms of enemies for days and days. More importantly, all the players had to contribute massive amounts of crafting materials to fill a bar for the "war effort" which eventually resulted in the ability to ring the gong and open the gates.

Barrier to entry for young kids and the average person who may be on the fence about playing it and not gel with the community or game type. There are various reasons but in practice I've found this to be the most stable over time. Usually this will be paired with paid DLC/expansions in the future (which is completely fair depending on what's given).
Free to Play forces the company to find monetization elsewhere usually in the form of a cash shop, but this is rarely done well, and I stress rarely. It's a very difficult thing to balance and can become nickel-and-dimer quick.

Personally think the best monitization model palia can follow is the WoW one... bit of it free, then membership subscription along side major DLC's costing money. This is mainly because it's the best way in todays age to secure a long life for a MMO. Every majorly successful MMO does it, or at least the 3 big players (runescape, WoW and ESO)
