No, there aren't combos for riding traits, you just get both of them on a horse. Although you can't have 2 traits on the same horse that boost the same thing. For example you can't have Sprinter and Bulldozer on the same horse.

Also cosmetic traits never combo, but almost every animal can have a sheen, a pattern, a color, and (the extremely rare) visual effect. The phoenixfires only get 2 things, a pattern and a color.

Roulette or regular Trait Treats (the pink ones) can. The Rider's Trait Cookies are not worth it. If they do anything at all (which they might not) the chance is so tiny, it's a waste.

I've rerolled traits on plenty of other people's animals, to help them. If you think somebody would mess up your animals, then don't give them editor permission.

There's no way to give a horse specifically a riding trait. Those traits can show up like any other functional trait, with a trait treat or a roulette cookie. And those won't work if you're already at the max number of traits, which is 6 total. You also can't have more than 3 riding traits on a single horse.

May I respectfully suggest that if your goal is to maximize stamina management, if you don't care about having a high speed, try out this combo: Marathoner+Technical+Bulldozer

You'll get the full strength boost to stamina, no drawback to speed (but also no boost), and your turning will be better

If you breed a 3rd riding trait onto your horse, you can just force feed it a pile of Rider's Reroll treats til you get the 3 exact ones you want.

Etiquette:

1. Only go to another person's Ranch if they have invited you
2. Generally, check if they're ok with you petting, feeding and gathering. Most people are though. Feeding is helpful most of the time.
3. You'll want to wait for the person to be on the Ranch, else you can't collect (and collecting is where most of the exp comes from)

I will want you to pet and collect everything, feeding is optional. Make sure you have a lot of focus, as most of these animals have 6 items stacks I think

It's very inefficient to use raw veggies. I always recommend at least preserving
Cooked food is more cost efficient a lot of the time (also gives more happiness, if a higher rarity than common), but just feed what you want.

Yeah, buying more animals does help. Petting every day and feeding occasionally is ok exp, but most exp comes from collecting items from the adults.
You are welcome to come to an alt or 2 of mine for exp though (if you are still about)

This little baby is, well almost perfect, except for that darn Dirty trait.
Should I try using the Oopsie cookie and keep my fingers crossed it removes the right trait?
Or should I just wait for it to grow up, and then through breeding get rid of the Dirty trait?

My gripe with the cookie option (as is for everyone) is that I can't choose which trait it removes, and obviously I want to keep the Dappled pattern and the Peony coat.
Breeding can be a hit or miss because inheritance is quite random.
I have no idea what to do. 🫠

What I would do is try to get whatever sheen you want instead of dirty isolated on another animal and then give this one a breed biscuit. Then if the one with only the sheen goes first when breeding you are really likely to get all the traits you want on the baby.

Honestly, you would be better off having more Dawnspur.
Each extra Dawnspur you have over 10 reduces the production speed of all Danwspur by 2.5% (up to 20, then it gets worse by more).
Akwinduu and Phoenixfire both reduce by 5% for each extra over 5 (up to 10, then more).
So, you would probably be better with something like 16 Dawnspur, 7 Akwinduu, 7 Phoenixfire

Yup, all animals of a species get a 25% reduction when you are at double the limit for that species

The absolute optimal setup for total # of items collected from horses is 8 Phoenixfires, 7 Akwinduu, and 15 Dawnspurs. That said, the whole thing is kinda silly and you should just do what you like. You'll get the achievement easily enough either way.

Phoenixfires have a higher base gain than the other 2 horse species, which is why you want proportionally more of them (as a % over the soft cap)

I didn't feel like trying to remember enough calculus to solve this optimization by hand, so I just had excel calculate the marginal gain for a horse of each additional species and then manually picked the optimal horse to add to the ranch for each step.

Your proposed setup results in 0.3% (roughly 1 in 335) less produce. Having a production trait on a horse somewhere would make a bigger impact than choosing a phoenixfire vs a dawnstar. That said, the spicy foods from Phoenixfires is more useful overall.

Currently, I tend to make more money Ranching per day than I do gardening (well, not right now because it's fairly early in the new patch, but most of the time I do)

What some people have suggested is having other Ranch 'plots' where only one plot is actually active and productive, but you can visit the others.
This seems more feasible from what I've understood, but LOTS of people would need to submit feedback for something like that to be thought about

I would even love to be able to see my retired animals. They don't need to be productive. I was hoping they would use one of the large fields in the farm for all the retired animals to roam.

The issue is performance. Loading the animals into the Ranch can already take a little while on decent PCs, let alone less powerful PCs or the Switch.
And that's with 30 animals.
If you have a bunch of Retired animals to load in as well... It just makes the issue worse.
That's why the idea of different Ranch plots (where you can visit any but only one is productive) seems like one of the only viable solutions I've seen people mention where you can see your animals.
If the stalls near the entrance of the Ranch showed a random Retired animal, that could also be an option I reckon. But I feel that many people wouldn't be happy with only that.

And S6 have stated that performance is a factor in why Ranching is set up as it is (said something like it being a compromise between features and performance)

You can get sheen and vfx on all but Phoenixfire. VFX are random upon buying the animal. So you'd need to get it by buying and then use Cookie of The Day to try and get the traits you want, and you can always use Oopsie to remove it if needed

The traits don't cancel each other. You can consider that the traits give two positive points to the stat they r boosting and one negative to the ones they r decreasing, so you always end up with a small boost on the ones that r being boosted, even if they r getting one debuff, unless you are two traits debuffing the same stat. I hope that makes sense

You would buy the Obsidian Roli if you want that color/pattern pet.

The Handler's license allows you to take any Roli you own out which means any combination of cosmetic traits you wish. If you get it, buying the Obsidian Roli is a bit redundant since you can breed one with those traits to take out. But buying the license for 2.5k coins is a bit excessive if you want the obsidian color since there's a cheaper option (unless you want to take out a roli of a different combination).

It's basically:
2.5k for any color Roli you want to take out (and you can change them as you wish)
~1.3k just to have an Obsidian Roli & no other colors

If you want all Legendaries, then obviously remove Mentee for something else (there's no other Legendary to boost Production Speed, so pick any other. If you in wanted a functional trait to help a tiny bit with production, Content 6 (indirectly)
I'd also suggest Quick 5 rather than Gourmand, but Gourmand worked for this test better.

We don't exactly know. The description suggests they increase the rate of Riding Traits appearing via mutation. We have some tests ongoing, but it will be a long time before we have meaningful results
Only babies can mutate, but it is possible that the adults with Rider's Trait will make Rider's Trait mutations on any offspring more likely (but only during the breeding process).

(No guarantee about the adults' offspring thing, but Predictable also affects the offspring so it is possible)

Ok, this makes sense of some of my breeding then. My pekis are my 'cookie farmers' so they always have a predictable cookie active. As soon as they venerate, I give them a divine donut and the cookie keeps their desired traits intact to ensure the legendary treat packs. Other animals I just breed because Im breeding and random traits will generate and I'll wonder where they came from. I thought it was random who stuck to the traits they had and who just made it up 😆

Obsidian and Alabaster are both Colour traits, so you can only have one.
The pattern you have can affect the colour of the body though.

I think you might be thinking of Rider's Rerolls
Rider's Trait say they give your mutations a greater chance to be Riding Traits
Rider's Reroll means that all your Riding Traits are rerolled (though there is a non-zero chance of no noticeable change happening, especially with more than 1 Riding Trait). And yes, it ONLY rerolls the Riding Traits, unlike the Reroll Cookie

So I was getting about 1 in 8 traits as riding traits, I wiped the traits, trait treat til I get a riding trait, then add another trait, oopsie it and hope the wrong one got wiped, try again. It only took about 40 total trait treats. Then I got very lucky to get 2 nice visuals from cookie of the day, because I did NOT want to repeat the riding trait thing.

Yeah, this is way safer than trying to modify an existing pretty horse. Cause what you can do with a "blank" horse is feed it Trait Treats and Oopsie cookies until you get a riding trait. Then buy some Riding Reroll treats from the Amber Echo shop near the central stables in royal highlands. Use those to get your preferred riding traits. Then breed the pretty horse with the good riding horse.

The lowest quality Fast Grow cookies are buyable for a bit of gold at the ranch cash register, and it takes it from 3 full days to 1.5 days. Very worth it. Then once they're young adult, feed them a Plain cookie to clear the effect, so that they don't get old too fast.

How do you know they aren't growing up when they should?
You fed a Fast Grow Cookie yesterday, form previous messages. That's 1 and a half days to age up to Young Adult.
Ranching isn't intended to be a fast skill I'm afraid.
You can't feed Faster Grow cookies if they already have one of the Faster Grow cookies active, or if it's bugged out.
In general, safest thing to do is to determine if you want an animal to age up faster before you name, pet or feed for the first time. Decide and feed that faster ageing cookie before the next in-game 6am
EVERYTHING on the Ranch updates at Palian 6am.
If an animal will age up, it will do so at 6am on the dot. If an animal is about to produce an item, it happens at 6am. Happiness and Focus update at 6am. Timers (New in Town, Dispassionate, Soothed, Recently Pet) all run out at 6am (not necessarily the next one, obviously it depends on the amount of time on the timer. But it will expire at a 6am)

I would heavily recommend getting the traits you want on separate animals and breeding them together when this is plausible

In the Compendium, there is a chart for thresholds to get to the next donation tier with a specific treat (this chart is also in the calculator you were linked to), and there are charts for negative trait combos too. Plus there's a lot of info about donations in general (including a write up of efficient ways to get a donation set up), but I'm curious about this chart you are mentioning...

Ok I have some questions about the Obsidian Flame Pheonix Horse:
(I have Read the compendium but it’s a lot of information to go through a process so apologies if I ask things clearly in it that I’ve missed)

• The ways to get the legendary cosmetic (other than buying the store token) is breeding mutations or buying at the ranch shop. When it says ‘breeding mutation’ does it refer to potential mutations it may acquire as a baby? Or they are born with the mutation when bred?

• is it more likely to get the obsidian flame cosmetic if I use my alabaster Pheonix horse in the breeding process? Or does it not matter and is still completely random?

• it says you can’t get obsidian flame from cookie of the day, just wanted to confirm? (I’ve seen people get it through a reroll cookie so just curious as to why a cookie of the day wouldn’t work)

• if I manage to get an obsidian flame (or preferably two if luck is on my side) and I breed it, is the obsidian flame more likely to pass on to the baby like any other normal cosmetic? Or are legendary cosmetics completely chance based? (Asking cause I have the perfect riding trait Pheonix horse that I want to breed with an obsidian flame to get my perfect riding horse)

• lastly, I saw that obsidian and alabaster can be affected by an oopsie cookie, is that definitely true?

Yeah I agree, in my experience it's only about a 2 second difference, I think it should be at least 5 maybe

At least for the long-living part, Youthful Energy + Ages Gracefully or Immature + Ages Gracefully is the longest lifespan you can get I think. The trait section in the compendium should have more details on exactly the boost those traits give, but I think it does have a very strong effect.

Alternatively to Masha’s great explanation ^
You can just breed for the traits you want, get some other animals to breed for large donation values (namely rare and legendary treat packs) and get yourself some Divine donuts from legendary packs (turns animal back to baby) and then some Insta-grow from rare packs (instantly grows animal to next life stage, so baby > young adult or young adult > adult)
Then just feed divine donut, then Insta grow- when your horse gets to elder. It will get the horse back to the start of the young adult life stage.
It’s a bit more finicky, but saves you room on your obsidian horse for other traits that you may want

• The breeding mutations does refer to random traits you can develop on the offspring as soon as they are born, as in random traits that may appear on the breeding screen

• It's more likely to get if by buying new horses or using cookies. Getting it from breeding can happen, but it's highly unliked and using the Alabaster won't increase your odds (if anything it'd make it lower, since there's a chance for you to get alabaster instead of obsidian)

• I'm almost sure you can get it from Cookie of The Day, since it's a cosmetic and not a VFX, just really unlikely

• Yes, having two Obsidian make it more likely to pass on, but also it's still chance based, RNG will either be in your favor or not

• Yes, they can be affected by oopsie and reroll cookies. The legendaries that aren't affected are the VFX (aura, sparkles and electric but Phoenixfire can't have them) and the species exclusive legendary functional traits.

I did oopsie the obsidian off...but...I never alter the original animal. I first copied her using a Immaculate confection + fancy breed cookies then oopsied/tweaked the baby only. It was hard enough getting the obsidian so I won't touch the original.

Nothing moves from Status Effects to Traits.
Status Effects have timers unless they are from Treats (in which case you remove them with a Plain Cokie or when utilising their effect, like in the case of breeding for Breed Cookies)
If your Dispassionate/Recently Pet/Soothed status effects ran out, it just means you can breed/pet them again (well, petting will give exp and happiness again)

Accelerated Ageing being green is great as a baby. Not so much as an adult.
I would advise having a read through the pinned Ranching Compendium (pins > 1st link in 2nd set of links). It's long, but it's thorough

Yes, and if that continues it would suggest that both Quirky and Rider's trait either don't work or the odds are so low as to be not be noticable, but these results are also strange compared to the QV + Rider's trait test when only 1 of the 5 didn't gain any traits. I think it's still early though. Also I'm breeding 2 Quirky V together every day. They have a Riders trait cookie (because you can't remove it) but no other cookies. I have only done 4 so far and don't have space to do 2 no trait animals to compare, but they have gained mutations every day so far, and not rider's ones.

I started something like this just before the patch actually, recording just with Quirky 5 breed and seeing if mutations arise.
Recording whether Quirky is on 1 or 2 parents, how many mutations arise and if Quirky was inherited.
Only space for 3 parents with Quirky on the account that has it, and it hasn't popper up on a different alt yet
I will also set up controls on one of the other alts at some point too, but want Quirky first

Well, I'll keep sharing so you can add these to your data, and might try adding breed cookies in a couple of weeks to see whether that increases the mutation rate more. I had a theory a while back that the mutations were somehow 'unlocking' traits you didn't have yet or have atm or something like that. And someone, I think @tough willow , thought there might be some sort of genetic memory, but whenever a new animal came out it always always seemed like I got a lot more mutations on that animal for a while than I did on the other animals.

Which would also explain in part why the QV+Rider's gained so many traits compared to these last 2 tests.

Btw, average number of mutations I have without Rider's Trait is 0.78 (if only counting when both parents had Quirky 5, then it's amusingly lower, at 0.5). I only have 19 data points though.

Average number of mutations on your 4 with Rider's Trait is 2.75
The amount of data is too small to say anything really, but makes me wonder if Rider's Trait is helping to boost the mutations when breeding.
And that makes me wonder if that's what Pedigree cookie is meant to be doing rather than Rider's Trait...

Hello, I’d like your opinion on something regarding the Alabaster horse.
I got the pack with this trait on Thursday the 21st.
Unfortunately, I made a mistake (like many others, I think) and gave him cookies that caused him to lose his Alabaster trait. 😭
I wrote to support the next day to explain what happened and ask if they could do anything about it.
Today I completed the breeding achievements to buy two reroll cookies.
In your opinion, should I wait for Palia’s response? Is there really a chance they’ll do something for me (restore the horse to Alabaster, or give me a new coupon to get a new one)?
Or should I try to restore the horse to Alabaster, knowing that I only have two reroll cookies, and that this happened last Thursday?
I’m really sad to have lost this trait so easily, especially since we spend real money to get it.

Yes, people have received a new voucher after doing the same thing. You likely will too, you'll just have to be patient I'm afraid (new patch means lots of players making support requests, which means a delay in response times)
You are unlikely to get Alabaster with your 2 rerolls.

I don't think Pedigree should be doing that, to be clear. Theoretically, it should just increase the weights of Riding Traits when it comes to selecting Traits for inheritance, at least based on the description.
But, from the Rider's Trait description, that shouldn't increase the rate of mutations, only the likelihood of the mutation being a Rider's Trait...and so far, it could just be an RNG thing skewing the data

Yeah, that's what the description suggests it should do.
But the way the game decides what traits are being inherited is by weighting the traits so that some traits are more likely to be inherited than others. Pedigree theoretically should increase the weight of the Riding Traits only.

Not really with a screenshot, no.
So, you are more likely to inherit a tier 5 trait than a tier 1 trait (but tier 1s are more likely to randomly appear).
Say you had Mentee 5 and Immature 1 on an animal and IC or breed with a no-trait animal.
Let's say the game decides it will inherit one trait only (could be 1-2). You are far more likely for Mentee 5 to be passed on than Immature 1. These aren't the numbers, but essentially in the inheritance pool, Mentee 5 is worth 5 and Immature 1 is worth 1. Total of 6. When deciding what to pass down for the first trait, the game rolls a number between 1 and 6. 1-5, Mentee 5 is passed down. If it rolls 6, Immature 1 is.
The only reason I know this is because I have had some game data shared with me. It is not an easy thing to work out in-game. You'd need huge amounts of breeding data.

Theoretically, if a Pedigree makes inheriting something more likely, it should increase the weight of that trait for inheritance. So instead of being a 5, maybe it would be an 8 or a 10? No idea what the magnitude of pedigree might be.
Again, these are not the real numbers.

Also, the data isn't always right, so I try to actually check it in-game normally, but a breeding test on that scale...no thanks. No space (or time) for that

The game picks one random marble as a trait to pass on first.
There are more marbles for Mentee 4 as it is more likely (higher weight = more marbles)
Changed from Mentee 5 to mentee 4 and Immature 1 to 2 to make the proportions match the image better

gosh, that was a long time ago, lol.

I think i speculated there was an additional hidden breeding mechanic, like a lot of us, speculating something like a genetic memory, because now and then there was Something Weird, but we never found anything concrete.

but i suggested that although not a true or intended genetic memory function, the animals which held bypassed mutually exclusive combos, and other bugs (there was one i cant recall atm), were like a created form of it as people were essentially manufacturing family lineages in animals.

and thus, all testing we do (for example your quirky lines even) has the potential of being spoiled by cumulative descending effects, if not refreshed from stock animals or accounted for. because bugs we cant even know exist yet could be being passed down and effecting animal functioning and breeding.

and so i went inactive instead of investigating anything more because everything was too broken to tell 😭
