No, you always get the same to get a new fish to spawn you have to reel again for a new fish. And in the ripples if you lose the first fish that bites then you lost the starred one. Cuz if a fish bites when you are fishing in the ripples is always a starred fish, but the ripples disappear after the first fish bites.

Rest easy, it was a lake shark:) Sometimes the lake ones look almost blue black and sometimes green, but the Maws belly is darker grey. The lake ones all have the almost white belly.

Well, I was just gonna do a short video on catching a lake shark and I start recording and pull a maws, starred at that 😅

No buffs.

Just make sure as soon as it jumps to let go and just follow with the shark. And when it lands keep reeling. It might suck in the beginning but eventually you can catch most fish without buffs. Also, now you see how maws look like on its belly. 😁

You don't need glow worms for the shark plushies. They spawn without bait aswell. It's only for the fins you need glow worm as those are bonus drops from catching the sharks themselves. 🙂

I do believe there is some correlation between bait and level when it comes to fishing. Me lvl 73 with no bait on a exquisite rod have gotten 4 elder shark plushies, which I find is ridiculous that a legendary plush is easier to get then a epic one and my friend, lvl 6 fishing with worms on a fine tod has gotten 0 plushies and we have fished for the exact same anount of time.

You can't turn fish into glow worm. It's only consumables that can be turned into worms/glow worms.

Yes you can. You grill two and then put them in the worm thing.

You can get anywhere between 8 and 73 glow worms in an hour depending on the value of the fish.

RNG, like most things in this game when it comes to collection. Also, check the palia wiki when they spawn so you don't just stand and cast when they don't spawn. Umbraan spawns in freshwater I.e mitana grove between 6pm and 3am. 🙂 other then that it's just fish, fish and fish some more until you get it. Oh, and with glow worms ofc. 🙂

The shark plushies will bite on whatever bait. No bait is best if you are just going for the sharks. If you want a chance for the fins you will need glow worms as they produce lake sharks and maws and the fins are a bonus loot when catching the sharks themselves. Lake shark has a chance drop for fin while maws is 100% fin drop.

That is exactly why I was asking. When I opened the recipe it said I had 141 fish, but I knew I only had 20 non star in my bag. I do have star fish on my lots, and my epic fish were in my lockbox. They were still there after I cooked 10 fish stew, but so were all the non star on my bag. So where did the fish come from?

Wow, that is a new one on me! I wish I could help but that situation doesn't follow my understanding of how it works. When I cook anything, I always move the meat or fishi want to use into my bag so it gets used first. Then I just keep an eye on my bags inventory to make sure I don't use more than what's in there. I'm pretty sure that recipes won't take ingredients that you've placed on your plot (don't think the recipe even counts them until they're back in your inventory), and they don't pull from lockboxes, so they're safe. It sounds like your other fish bred while you weren't looking?

For your other question, yes maws is a all day fish, rare tho. Only when you see the belly will you know if it's a lake shark or a maws. Lake shark has a white belly and maws a more brown tint to it. Jumping patterns are identical. If you fish it infected, maws will have a black belly and lake shark still has a white belly.

So from what I can tell, the sharks are more likely to get you fins, and when a shark plushie shows up it won’t move. You can catch a lake shark plushie with no bait though! And the glow worm will be for the maws. I watched my spouse catch a maws plushie with the glow worm and it was JUST the plushie, not the full shark. I’ve caught the maws and it came with the maws fin plushie.

Does anyone know if the Palia Pedia website is kept up to date? Just looking at the Waterlogged Chest entry, and it says last updated the day after EW expansion came out (and the supposed change to make Waterlogged Chests better with no bait) but this is not reflected in the data shown on the page.
So I'm guessing the data is the outdated numbers...though supposedly used to have basically a double chance in hotspots and ever so slightly better chance in ponds as opposed to everywhere else. Would people say this still holds true for them?
Apparently the max rate used to be about 8% (glow worms in pond hotspots), does not feel like a 8% rate now with no bait in hotspots to me sadly

Sadly though, there is no trick. Run up and down the Bahari Coast, I advise just sticking to the bubbles to try and get a star quality (may also have a slightly higher chance of rare fish and every little helps if so). If you just want to sit in one place and get a standard quality, that's fine too, personal preference.
But ensure it's glow worms you are using and you can only get it 6am - 6pm

Makeshift chests are more common with no bait now according to EW patch notes, and PROBABLY better if fishing in the fishing nodes/bubbles/hotspots (at least they were before, and my experience seems to suggest this too, but I have little proof)

So, kinda a toss up whether you want to fish in Bahari Coast just running to the fishing nodes or sit in UG for the constant hook speed buff.
My maths from a few small tests today suggest Bahari Coast is better, especially if you are in a party. But this is going off of the old pre-EW assumption that fishing nodes have roughly double the chance of Waterlogged Chests...which may no longer be true

I'm just saying Bahari Coast as that's the biome I find I waste the least time searching for a new fishing node. Ponds were, according to the old data, better for Waterlogged Chests by 1% (that 1% could really add up, but only if you were finding the nodes as consistently as in Bahari Coast, which I find to be untrue)

And if you wanted to party up for Waterlogged Chest hunts at some point, would be down for that. Party hook speed buff and small chance of a double waterlogged chest is not bad.

Considering no one has done the analysis since EW we can never know for sure. The change they mentioned in patch notes could be interpreted in 2 ways and from my experience for waterlogged chests no bait fishing is still worse than glow worm fishing. Maybe I was just unlucky. Don't reel when they are jumping and just follow their motion. They will do a double jump once or twice per catch so just be cautious of that. I no buff fish with one hand and check trading on discord at the same time. But I have fished alot, like an unhealthy amount of time. 😅

It's always a good idea when you're desperately after something in particular that you have the best available buffs on you. I tend to use fisherman's brew, fish stew and sushi with a safe zone hook.

Better rod makes a big difference. There is no proven relation between fishing level and things actually being easier though.
As for the bobber thing, I would say focus on the fish not the bobber, try to keep the fish in the brackets. And if the brackets go red, stop reeling

Improving your rod gives the rod more health and makes the rod more responsive to your movements, making it easier to keep up with fish.
You can also buy the fisherman's brew buff from Einar fairly early which is an amazing buff. Boosts the size of your brackets, and is super cheap to make (1 crystal lake lotus and 1 emerald carpet moss for 5!)

So I've learned a couple of things these last days of shark hunting. If you fish in a Hotspot and the bubbles dissappear but you have made a cast into that spot before it dissappeared, it will still be star quality catch. If you don't reel in the fish when it jumps so you "miss" it and wait, it's the same fish over and over and it will still be star quality. Also I've noticed more plushies to come from hotspots then out of them.

I tried analyzing the video I have of me catching a maws and the only time you can see the difference is when it's belly up. Maws has a brown tint on the belly while lake shark is pearl white. That is the only difference. They both look identical in all other ways, how the jump, how they act. So I make sure I hook all sharks and hope it's a maws.

What are the perks for mining in a party? I've never done it and I'm curious.

Chance at Double loot, so 4 iron for example, if the party buff hits you get 8 iron. Same goes for starstones, 1 ruby becomes 2 when party buff hits, which isn't all the time but still tolerable. It goes for most skills, fish, mining, bugs, hunting, foraging.

Also it's faster, with less durability use as you swing your pickaxe less for each ore node. So you need to repair your pickaxe less often. Both of these facts mean you can mine for longer, making it a much better way to gain ore even if you are unlucky and never get the double loot from being in a party

You're using glow worms on Bahari coast between 3am-6pm? There is sadly no trick, angle, chant or wish that works. It's all RNG. However complaining about it on discord has proven over and over again to be working. Usually after some complaint on discord it appears 😂

You are looking for the oyster one. I, myself have opened hundreds of oyster and no pebble. While some get it quite fast. It is low drop rate and mostly comes down to pure luck.

I do have a route actually and on a good run, which isn't that often I can get close to a stack of palium. It differs a bit depending on how I run tho. But I usually run it atleast once a day as I also look for the dig spots for giving away extra artifacts. 🙂

Somewhere between 20-80 palium per run. But you can just crazy run around EW and find it all over aswell.

Or bad luck protection so if you open 3 dupes in a row, next is guaranteed not to be a dupe

The sharks in particular have a pattern to their jumps. The lake sharks move much faster than Maws does, so I find that the major safe zone size booster + fisherman's brew (makes the reticle just absurdly large, since the effects stack) + fish stew (makes the reticle move faster) takes it from "ah oh god" difficulty to something much more calm and methodical.

Sounds like you're doing everything right to me. There are no time of day or location parameters for starstones, and stone nodes in both Kilima and Bahari (and Elderwood, actually) can all drop jasper.

If you're a gambler and have infected essence to burn/have gotten the accomplishment to unlock the ability to purchase them, the Starstone Mystery Bags have a one-in-ten chance of giving you a starred jasper? (They guarantee one star quality starstone, with even odds of getting any of the 10 possibilities.)

Yep, whitestone also gives citrine and jasper. I believe the drop rates are the same, but if you want to farm palium and whitestone (and platinum) at the same time, it's not a bad strat. At least a change of scenery?

and, not that this will change what you're doing, really, but while starstones can drop from any size node, large ones drop them more frequently.

About twice as often as small nodes, and half again as often as medium ones.

But starred jasper are just really dang rare. They do overall drop about 10% as often as the unstarred ones. If you were dead center on the curve, you would have about 2 starred jasper by now, BUT, RNG being R, your current results are not way out of keeping with the odds, either.

ok, so seriously, I am getting annoyed at trying to catch the last 3 infected fish i need. It's bad enough that I need the Majiri of War, Maws and Devil fish, but on top of them being ridiculously low spawning, the Majiri only is only catchable during morning and evening and then you have to actually find an infected fishing node. Feels harder for the Devil fish, cause i find way less infected nodes in the pond areas even though it's available from 9 pm to 3 am. So during that small window I feel like I might get 2 or 3 nodes maybe. ugh at least the Maws is catchable any time, so there's some light in this darkness. Ok, I'm done with my rant/complaining now, going back to the grind.

It may help to know that it's possible to reset fishing nodes by moving at least 150 meters away. So you can fish out of them more than once, until they despawn 5 minutes after they are first fished from. Prismbeard's cave actually makes this super easy, because you can just pop into the sub-cave with the puzzle and then back into the cave :)

Bobbers are cosmetic only. Their main "function" is to help you differentiate your bobber from other players' bobbers. The bobbers that glow (galdur, the vault of flames one, and the lantern bobber) can be useful at night. Otherwise they confer no benefit.

\0. The usual advice about leveling... have you been boosting your focus bonus % at the Phoenix Shrine and keeping yourself fed? If you haven't, start spending your renown there at every opportunity, and make sure you have a steady source of focus food suitable for your max focus amount.

   Though that's more about repair kits than time spent per se.

Personally, I find Kilima easier to mine in. Less up-down-and-around, and the difference between a large copper node and a large iron node is not very large. Silver can also be used to craft ore compasses, which may be useful.

And don't pass up those large stone nodes :)

2. Fishing:
   a) The "fishing with friends" buff, acquired when someone catches a fish near you, makes fish bite faster, as does trout dinner - and the effects stack. More fish in less time = more XP per hour.

b) Star quality fish give more XP than normal quality ones (and are worth more gold as well), but chasing nodes will probably slow you down more than it's worth, unless you're short on bait.

Combining a & b: I would maybe suggest fishing in the Underground using glow worms, since the nodes there reset frequently and there are almost always people fishing down there.

c) Finishing reeling your fish in with full rod health (the long bar at the bottom of the screen) will give you a Perfect Catch bonus, which used to be +20% XP.

I'm not sure if that particular number still applies in all cases, since they "rebalanced" fishing XP in the last patch and that reshuffled a lot of stuff, but there's definitely SOME bonus for it.

Fisherman's brew, fish stew, and sashimi may all help you here.

OH and the overall XP for fish in the Elderwood may be higher than Kilima and Bahari? I'll have to recheck that, but certainly their gold amounts are higher. When I hunted chests with glow worms when it was higher chance with them I just recast and only reeled in the chests when i wanted chests and the fish when i wanted fish, to conserve worms

I like seeing the occasional chest when using glow worms, and this was true even before I was actively hunting chests
Removing the chance of getting them would probably increase the odds of epic fish by maybe half a percent. It would make the common fish slightly more common, by a higher amount.

2. Buffs. Especially Fisherman's Brew, it's very cost effective.
3. Ensure you only reel when it is in your brackets, and stop when it is jumping too.

Unless you mean hard to find it. In which case, it's just RNG. All you can do is persist.

From what I've observed, anything that generates lots of loot rolls quickly will work for this. I personally get most of mine from tilling my garden... but that's because that's most of what I do in the game, lol

I have friends who regularly run honey lure parties, though, and they usually get at least a couple of sticker packs per run, because they end up catching literally hundreds of bugs.

in your accomplishments - for bug plaques you will need to complete the Kilima and Bahari Bug Collector, Master Kilima and Bahari Bug Collector, Elderwood Entomologist, and Master Elderwood Entomologist

for fish, you'll need the Kilima and Bahari Fish Collector and Master version and the Elderwood Angler and Master.

if you catch the star version of the bugs/fish you'll get credit for the non-star version as well

The fishing buffs do not affect your luck (there is no luck mechanic in general), and Maws just has a really small drop chance. The Fishing with Friends, trout dinner, and other buffs than speed up bite time can help you roll the dice faster, but won't make any given fish more likely to spawn within a set number of casts

If I had to make an educated guess, I would put the odds for hooking a Maws somewhere on the order of 0.1% to 0.01% - between one in a thousand and one in ten thousand

Maws is rare for sure. I hooked 2 in like an hour. It is low odds, no trick to it other than just fish and fish and fish some more. The fishing buffs does not increase odds, only reel speed, reticle size, etc. Also, if you have a keen eye you can actually spot the difference on a maws and lake shark by the color of its jaw. It's such a slight tint difference so it's hard to detect. Otherwise if you hook all sharks, look for the brown ish belly, then it's a maws.

My personal approach is to fish for Maws only during times when I have a chance to also get eleroo eels (and majiri of war) so I don't feel like I'm going home with nothing to show for it. During the day I go fish in the pirate cave for a chance at angelfish and mermaids.

I also use the Overflow feature to send fish home so I don't have to stop to empty bags

Focus has nothing to do with drop rate. You are just really unlucky. There is nothing in this game that increases drop rate on anything. One case would be using lure for like ph beetle, it doesn't increase drop rate of plush, but it increases the spawn of them, thus "increasing" drop rate as you can catch alot more faster. Fishing there are no tricks to getting a specific fish to bite. It's just pure RNG. 🙂

Fishing in the nodes/bubbles/ripples/whatever you call them MIGHT increase the rate of rarer fish a bit. It used to, but that was before fishing was overhauled in the EW update. Until the fishing rates are data mined, we will not know for sure how it works now though.

Anyone have any holy grail locations or methods for catching the giant kilima stingray?

Location: They are caught in Kilima Lake. All of the Kilima Lake waters are the same - the whole coast of Kilima, from the southeast corner and across, then all the way up the beach in the northwest, including the lagoon where Einar fishes. The chances are equally good anywhere.

Bait: glow worms only
Time of day: morning, day, and evening (3AM to 9PM Palia time)

If you're having trouble getting one on the hook, you aren't alone: they're an epic fish, which have a pretty low drop rate (somewhere between 1/100 and 1/50, typically, don't have exact numbers since EW reshuffled things).

Unfortunately, the only tactics I can recommend for very rare fish are:

1. persistence and pacing - set a number of glow worms you want to go through, then consider it a successful outing when you've managed that; don't expect to get it.

2. use buffs that increase the bite speed, so you "roll the dice" faster: Fishing with Friends, trout dinner, major hook time booster, and they all stack

As for actually reeling the thing in, the usual advice applies:

A) don't reel when it's jumping or if it drags your bobber out of the reticle - the ( ) parentheses looking thing. (The GKS often likes to jump immediately upon being hooked, so watch out for that.)

Instead, get your reticle re-centered over the bobber and follow it around until it lands again, then reel. This will save a lot of damage to your rod health.

B) Use buffs to help you: they don't affect your chances to hook one, but they can make reeling it in much less stressful.
Fisherman's brew is great: it's a cheap way to increase the size of your reticle, which makes it easy to keep the bobber inside it.

Fish stew (use ogopuu meat or cheapest no-bait fish) makes the reticle move faster/more responsively, but that can be a double-edged sword if it makes it too twitchy. Try it out and see.

Sashimi and sushi can help, too (they all stack), but I personally find them less useful compared to their cost.

In this case, recycle some of the fish you would otherwise sell from fishing by grilling them and feeding them to the glow worm farm.

Sorry if this is a question thats been asked before, but is the best way to try to get the elderwood achievement of infected fish is just running through the waterspots with tuning forks?

You don't need the tuning fork really. It just makes finding spots faster. But yh, running from pool to pool and fish is the way to go. Sadly no buff or angle or chant will increase spawn rate of certain fish. It's all RNG. 🙂

Might the Idol help? Will point you to nearby infected fishing nodes if upgraded

Either way, you'd need to run between the fishing areas to find infected hotspots though

I am quite familiar with fishing RNG 🥲 i still need to fish up majiri of war. I figured might as well try to get infected fish while i wait for the spawn time for majiri war fish

Is there like a good route that i could take? Like maybe start at mauvais way to mitana last or something like that?

If it's just majiri you need, I would fish in de mer dock and just fish sharks until majiri pops up. Nice little income aswell, and plushies. 🙂

I've been trying for 3 irl days and i still havent got it 😂😭😭 managed to get 2 maws tho (1 i use for the lantern upgrade)

Ugh that one was also very frustrating to do too 😭 catching mermaid and devilfish took so long for me. When i caught one for the bag, quite literally screamed out loud

Mitana grove is a good spot. Stretches quite far down with pools.

Any advice on catching a star quality devilfish? I managed to get my void ray btw!

Fish pools in mitana, regular Worm between 3a-6a and 6p-9p. It's one of those annoying fishes with a short time span. Use hook speed attachment if possible and Trout dinner for stacked hook time. Also fishing next to someone so you get that 5x bonus which also increase hook speed. More fishes faster. Also don't hook and reel fish that isn't devilfish. It's dark black/red in color so you'll see it when it jumps, then you hook.

I did this all morning! I had to get one of those toadstool floatfish for Tamara. I got 2 plushies and made about $12k and got a maijari before i got the floatfish. Not a bad way to spend the morning and it paid for my second house 😂 but damn it was frustrating

Maws is the last one I need.. I’ve only been hunting it in the infected or star bubbles so I can get a head start on the other achievements

Are there different fish in the infected bubbles? Or is it literally just for essence?

Just for the essence and there is an achievement if you catch all the fish, as well as bugs, when they’re infected

I got it at around mitana near the dock thing where ocassionally ogos spawns. But i stay at the little pillar on the water bc if you stay near the ogos, theres a chance they'll run you over 😂

Devil fish are with worms in the ponds where angelfish and the weird mermaid things are at night.
