Yes, but if they have starred versions unlocked, it will make them use those first. However, 99% of the time a cooking party starter will need to check "use starred" because past a certain level of gardening, you cannot get unstarred produce out of your garden anymore.

Not really relevant to recent conversation here, but I just realized something that in retrospect is kind of obvious... fish stew can be made with ogopuu meat. It is now probably technically the most cost effective beginner food again (as it was before 0.180 changed fish prices), especially since it uses zero garden ingredients (though access to ogopuu meat is obviously a barrier for brand new players unless they are very clever)

I was only thinking about that for fishing buff purposes, but yeah. It gives focus, too! lmao

though I think this is partially just my bias against/irritation with hearty vegetable soup, which just chews through garden produce for very little return

It's another one of those "varies per server" ones. I'm not sure what the respawn timer is, but it's not very long; the despawn timer is also shorter than 5 minutes (probably 2 minutes, in that case).

So I would head out to the zone and ask there for folks to call them out

(they also show up on a dowsing rod, and since they're only attached to the giant trees, it's pretty easy to spot which marker on the map is an elderflower)

Yes, if a recipe starts on a station type but needs that same station type to make one of the ingredients (e.g., needs rice cooked on the stove), then you have to have two. The first stove is busy keeping track of the overall recipe and can't be used for prep work. :)

Ultimately, in order to be able to cook every recipe in the game, you will need 2 of each station type.

Two ovens is helpful when you are baking things like Celebration cake that requires multiple rounds of baking. Or another recipe that requires bacon AND bread (one of the soups).

And there's multiple recipes that start at the ovens, and some of those may require an element to be baked in addition to be started in the oven. So having two ovens just saves you headaches.

Solo cooking is generally not profitable (only in groups where you can split the ingredients and effort), but one possible exception - need to check again after this hotifix changed a bunch of stuff - is spicy honey-baked muujin, which MAY be profitable cooked solo

Last time I tested it was for some reason worth 115g each starred, which makes frankly zero sense given the formula most other dishes adhere to

If you want to continue earning skill medals, then yes, it will help you earn those faster.

Some people do choose to stop bothering with focus food once they've bought everything they want to buy from the medals shops, though.

Some people like to level for the sake of "number go up", so focus is very important to them!

There is also a hypothesis that focus is related to star rate when cooking (i.e., is related to making money at profit parties), but I haven't been able to test that yet in a way that would gather enough high-quality data to overcome the multiple factors already involved.

Hmm that doesn't sound quite right. DuhScape tested it to determine the starred canned pumpkin value, and his turned out starred just fine. I suspect that what may have happened (because this happens frequently) was that they put the pumpkin in the machine and it said what it was producing... but displayed unstarred instead of starred. But when the canned pumpkin pops out, it should be starred, and was for DS...

correct. the pumpkin one has reduced benefits from the usual things you can do with crops. It may fair better in a particular recipe or something else though. Otherwise, if you can't find much use for it, I'd suggest keeping a small stash of it and seeds and then swapping it out.

yeah of course! RNG stands for "Random Number Generator" meaning it's based on chance! in this case you have a certain percentage chance to get the recipe every time you fish for it

so lets say it were a 1 percent chance that means it could take you 100 tries to get it, but its never guaranteed in those 100 tries? i think i explained that correct if that's confusing i can try and rephrase

as for where to find them, oak trees are found in kilima and pine trees are found in bahari bay! the type of axe you have determines the size of tree you are able to chop down, but you are still able to cut trees regardless of level!

do the minigames well use starred ingredients up the chances but its never absolute so u could just be unlucky

star quality is based on RNG, so at the end of the day its never guaranteed, but if you use starred ingredients and complete the dish faster (more time left on the timer) you're more likely to get star quality!

a few ways to complete the dish faster is by following the recommended order of steps on the wiki https://palia.wiki.gg/wiki/Dishes or by teaming up with other players to cook together and complete the dish faster :)

How do you add ingredients when cooking? So far I've ruined every recipe I've tried to make.

When you start a dish (whether it is on the prep station, mixing station, standard oven or standard stove), there will be requirements for additional cooking stations to prepare the dish that you're making.

For example, the Creamy Carrot Soup starts at the Standard Stove and only requires a Prep Station. You are only required to chop Wild Garlic to place into the pot on the Stove, and then mixing the pot once before the dish is made.

Another example is the Celebration Cake which starts at the Prep Station and also requires a Mixing Station and a Standard Oven. If you open the recipe table on the Palia Wiki, you can see what ingredients are used for each step at each cooking station.

Starred vs. unstarred depends on the specific dish and host, tbh, but most require starred, as the fish quality has a big impact on star rate.

For comparison, all-unstarred fish stew has a star rate of about 50%, while fish stew made with starred rare cloudfish is closer to 90-95% starred.

With stuff like poke, where each round might require 2 dari cloves and 1 heat root (or vice versa), starred fish makes sure you have the best chance at amplifying the value of everyone's contributions.

Since starred fish are obviously a bigger investment of both effort and gold value, parties will often split up the fish contributions among multiple people.

Fun history note: Veeery early on, celebration cake used to not have a fruit frosting step; you just spread jam on the cake layers directly. But they changed the recipe (and a lot of the rest of how dish sell values were calculated) because that was making cakes with utterly ridiculous sell values, since jam is worth 1.5x what an apple is.

Teeechnically fish stew (with unstarred fish) and any other kitchen recipe with (a) no bought ingredients (b) no starred ingredients will minorly improve in value if it turns out unstarred, and rather more so if it turns out starred; but imo it's so tedious and the margin so small that most of the time it's not worth doing.

Even the shbm (spicy honey-baked muujin) is very slow and might not be worth it, depends on the person

Because of how the dish sell value formula works (calculates based on sell value of unstarred ingredients), yes - because some ingredients must be bought (like vinegar, butter, oil) for 2x their sell value, and some will always be starred (garden crops past about level 38 gardening) and worth 1.5x their unstarred value. Starred items contribute to your chances of a starred dish (+50% added to the dish sell value) but don't guarantee it.

Plus, most ingredients CAN be processed in some other way to improve their value (seedmakers, preserve jars, glow worm and worm farms), so cooking has to beat those before I really consider it worth using active playtime on, if gold is your only objective. (Cooking for fun? all bets are off - follow your heart XD)

the old time cake parties were absolutely wild, if you had the time to process em with worms afterward, you could make 100 k + daily

also people reached stupiud high cooking level

i've seen folks doing nothing but cake parties with 500+ cooking level

Thank you for such an elaborate answer! It’s ok to not necessarily earn a lot of money on cooking (even though it would be preferable), but in my opinion it’s really demotivating towards cooking if you actually loose gold. Is there any place to request a fix on this or is it just me? 🙈

generally the harder/more advanced the recipe, the more it gives. But this may also mean it has several more rarer ingredients or time issues. >_> So you may want to find one that is practical for you to use to spam in turn. Likewise, cooking parties tend to go faster, so the xp also accelerates with extra completions.

Some folks also use campfire spam with a particular ingredient, since all you have to do is wait out the timer and set them repeatedly.

Skimming back, it sounds like you get about 20 xp per minigame step involved.

dumb question but have you tried restarting game? It looks like you should, but maybe something derped and is mucking it up. I assume you did at least try to click the make button?

Coldstone has the right of it. Campfire spam is fastest XP gain if solo, because XP scales with minigame steps, and kitchen recipe minigames take a lot longer than the campfire. If you set up a circle of 4-5 campfires and rotate, it can be as fast as 5 seconds each - about 4 base XP per second.

For cooking parties, the fastest XP gain is still celebration cake. At an efficiently-run party, 45s per round is very achievable, and the recipe earns 340 base XP per round (plus focus bonus, if you keep yourself fed), or 7.5 base XP per second.

Make sure you are upgrading your focus bonus percentage at the Phoenix Shrine, too, as that makes all XP gain faster (as long as you eat!)

I was doing hunting , got tons of meat. 4 campfire. Cook those meats. @65% focus bonus. 14s per round. It rotates perfectly to the seconds of 4 campfires. Get 33exp per 14s.

As long as u have meat, it's a endless loop. Getting 33exp constantly. Pretty Sweet

At what level or phase . Do you suggest venturing elderwood? All level 10? Minimum

MINIMUM fine tools and arrows for chopping trees/mining/hunting, but exquisite tools are better. Definitely exquisite rod for fishing; even the common no-bait fish fight you a bit. If you're just foraging, though, you can just walk right in whenever.

some quests do unlock some usefull things

Maws are easier people say compared to lake sharks. Lake sharks are harder than long nose for me, cause sometimes they do that thing where they jump twice.

I think what happens is that the lake sharks give you so much practice that, when Maws comes and moves the same way, we've already seen that dance

Assuming same fish, taco because corn is worth slightly more. However, corn takes 5 days to grow (vs 3 for rice) and tacos need all OP to fight the UI on the prep table since fish fillet and cornmeal are both on that station. Rolling also takes longer than cooking rice. If someone accidentally starts chopping fish, it takes even longer - and if they don't know how to back out and FINISH chopping their random fish (or ogopuu meat!) then it can ruin the round by tanking the sell value - and wasting the actual, expensive fish. I don't go to taco parties just because it's such a drag.

I've noticed that sometimes it doesn't work on steps after the first one, for some reason, and in that case you would need to unstuck

which unfortunately puts you all the way at the front of the plot now...

You can actually back out and hop right back in to skip the chop countdown

So on PC that looks like:
F to enter prep table
select ingredient, press Make
F to back out
F to start again

That's smart - I usually do the sprouts first since it fits neatly into the stir timer, stir, then dough, start oven, onion, pull oven, and wrap up

there are 4 cooking stations you will be able to craft as you level up your cooking skill! you unlock the Prep Station and the Stove at level 2 and you get the recipe from the Cooking Guild store, if you have that you need to craft it at your plot on the Worktable :)
