OOC: You can also wait while fishing too. On the 3rd bob when the fish comes up, you have a moment to see what it is. If it isn't what you want, once it goes back down under the water, you can reel in and then you won't actually consume the bait since you didn't hook the fish. If it IS what you want, then wait for another 3 bobs for it to come back up again, as it'll always be the same fish until your next cast. Good way to save bait if you're low on one kind.

You can force the fish into your overflow bag by splitting a stack of something in your inventory after you cast. I'm all about exploiting that overflow system.

Catching starred fish was easier it seemed because you know you're guaranteed to get one of some kind of fish with ripples, and with bugs you just have to rely on sound

You could probably catch one of those without a jar without too much of a problem. When I do use a buzzy jar in kilima to try to find glossamer veil moth or spotted mantis, the only bugs the jar leads me to half the time is fire breathing dragonfly at mirror pond
