It's very similar to the Friendship quests, with different gifts. Usually the end gift is a picture of the Majiri you are romacing to hang in your house/bedroom.

It's not the people you -need-. You need one person to cook any recipe in the game. I know because I'm not a pro gamer and have made every recipe in the game on my own. But my point remains, you can certainly go for a huge party if that's your preference, or you can do what I do and go solo or small group -- the only time people start asking is if they're doing these mega-parties 🙂
