Does it need to be formal research? As in research done in a professional setting? (I’ve done research but for fun, not professionally)
is it published? i need to write an article and they want to check on the research i included
Oh I’m so sorry I misunderstood. I didn’t realise you were looking for a research paper. I meant I’d researched it educated myself on it, but I don’t have anything formally written down.

Hello, I am an English teacher and I want to learn how can I rate my students level according to CEFR
Strictly speaking, English has only two grammatical tenses: past and present.
The future is expressed with modal verbs like will, not through verb endings. What people often call “tenses” are actually combinations of tense and aspect (simple, progressive, perfect, and perfect progressive), which describe how an action unfolds over time.
So saying English has "three tenses" is accurate in a grammatical sense, while "16 tenses" reflects functional categories
Just as a fun fact

Normally you'd have to get a paid one for accuracy and a proper certificate
The free ones aren't that trustworthy
It's the same as those free IQ tests online; they're not to be trusted
normally proper certificates would also make you so stressed and anxious that you'd score way below your real level and get depressed
there is no "accuracy"
no matter what you choose
getting stressed while speaking to an average person wouldn't equal to this, because normal person just wants to understand you and not judge you and give you scores

Hi I am new here. And I am serious about improving my English. If anyone is interested we can fix time and have debate or interview as practice everyday for an hour
My English is fine but it is not my native language. I want to get rid of the habit of first thinking about things in my native language and then think about how to say it in english. That is a barrier which makes me feel alienated in debate as everyone is engrossed in points and counter points and I am thinking how to say this in English and then I start to rush when speaking as I feel I have to cope up with speaking in 2 languages in my mind at the same time when native speakers don't have that problem and it just goes downhill as my accent becomes way thicker because I remind myself of me and everything.
I'm on it.
I messaged you.

Can someone recommend me a book to practice grammar?
Hello grownwomen, aren't you native? anyways. Some books which can help you are Essential Grammar in Use, English Grammar in Use and Advanced Grammar in Use. I have to admit that I am at a intermediate level, but I have seen that many people consider them as very helpful. They are written by Cambridge people and you can find them on internet easily.
Yes I am, but unfortunately throughout school we barley did grammar lessons and during high school I was affected by Covid, I did not have a English class for 2 years straight. Jumped straight into IB literature and I saw I was struggling with writing my essays and grammatical errors. I want to improve and get better.

They think, “If I can work enough, then one day I could rest.” Or,
“One day my woman will understand something and then she will
stop complaining.” Or, “I’m only doing this now so that one day I
can do what I really want with my life.” The masculine error is to
think that eventually things will be different in some fundamental
way. They won’t. It never ends. As long as life continues, the
creative challenge is to tussle, play, and make love with the
present moment while giving your unique gift.

Hello everyone, how can improve my grammer and speaking skils
grammar is best learned through reading, and later writing. Start with some English books at a lower reading level, maybe teen books or children's novels. as for speaking, i am not sure , but maybe there are opportunities in the voice channels
for uk english: Roald Dahl is a popular chidren's author. Some good books are James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda
for us english: sharon creech is a good author
these are not baby books, but a little easier to start reading
and the grammar is good

I posted this on reddit because I use calibre to read epub books and sometimes you want it to give you the meaning of a highlighted word or phrase in your own language and sometimes you want it in the target language you are learning. Often the search comes up based on the location of you IP address. But if you live in a non english speaking country you may want the description to be in English and not in your native countries language. I wanted to add this as a tip but am not sure where to put it. https://www.reddit.com/r/Calibre/comments/1nqj4v7/how_to_have_the_google_search_your_highlighted/
I hope someone may find it useful.

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I found a website with daily (enigmatic) writing prompts/questions. It's great for language acquisition and confidence, because first, you have to conceptualize the prompt/question, then formulate your "response". The prompts are formulated as "quests" and you earn "specks" for each completed quest.
There's also a Turing Test, where you get two small texts and you have to determine whether they are written by AI or a human. This is great for reading comprehension
These could be good for daily English practice. It's called the Abyss, https://abyss.ink
It's completely free as it just launched.
Your chance to leave your fingerprint among the billions and billions of artificial neurons.

No definitions listed.
The word "auster" has two primary meanings depending on its context and origin: one is a rare/literary English noun, and the other is a German noun or a Latin word that forms the root of other English words.
- In English (Literary/Poetic)
In literary or poetic English, "Auster" (often capitalized) is a noun meaning the south wind, sometimes personified. - German and Latin Contexts
In German: "Die Auster" is the German word for oyster.
In Latin: "Auster" can be a noun meaning the south wind or the south, or an adjective meaning austere, plain, bitter, or sour.
The English adjective "austere" (pronounced ah-STEER, with emphasis on the second syllable) derives from the Latin adjective. The adjective "austere" is much more commonly used in modern English than the noun "auster".
The meaning of the English adjective "austere"
The adjective "austere" generally describes a lack of comfort, decoration, or warmth. It is used in several ways:

Example: "I found her a rather austere, distant, somewhat cold person."
Simple and Plain: Describing something without excess, luxury, or ornament.

?def þhis sport
:x: That word could not be found in the dictionary.
This is likely a misspelling of 'þis', which is how 'this' was written in Old English and Early Middle English. Modern-day ⟨th⟩ was represented as ⟨þ⟩ (the letter Thorn) and ⟨ð⟩ (the letter Eth) in Old English. Many linguistics nerds, including me, would like for that to be the case again; some actively attempt to use Thorn in their online writing. I call this a misspelling since the idea of using it in modern times is to replace 'th' with 'þ', but in Middle English, there was a lot of variation in how one could write 'th' (there wasn't a standard): ⟨þ⟩, ⟨y⟩, ⟨yh⟩, ⟨ð⟩, ⟨t⟩, and ⟨þh⟩. So it is historically precedented.
It means 'this sport'.
Ohhhhh I was confused because I person answer me with that letter and my mind crashed

No problem! And don't worry. That letter is long dead, since the 1500s

Hello,
Does anybody have ESL teaching/teaching experience in general?
I am a high schooler volunteering at a NPO it’s not super big but basically we tutor and mentor Rohingya refugees and teach them English and math. I got put in the English curriculum director position and my friend meeting I have a bunch of students, but basically
Each kid is assigned to a volunteer and the vonulteer is supposed to go over everything in their “folder” which I am supposed to print out everything for each student specifically designed for them.
But the problem is these kids are all like from kindergarten English level to middle school level, so my first thought is to make a placement test, but I have no clue, and how should I go about it, should I make one for kindergarten, one for 1-3 one for 4-6 one for 6-8??? It depends but we have 1 hr sessions with the students for both English and math sometimes it’s just one the whole session but overall I really need help. I’m planning to talk to an ESL teacher at my school but I have a meeting before I can ask so please help me.

Hey, I used to struggle a lot speaking up in work meetings because English isn’t my first language.
I started practicing what I’d say before meetings and it helped a lot, so I ended up building a small tool to simulate real meetings and give feedback.
If anyone here is dealing with the same thing, happy to share it: https://talkcrisp.com/
Hello friends and respected sir,
I am an 11th-grade student, and my native language is Bengali. I passed my Matric English with great difficulty by rote learning. I have already learned Active and Passive Tenses and basic Modal Verbs, but now I feel extremely confused about Prepositions and Conjunctions.
Whenever I try to read English, I get stuck. I start translating everything into Bengali in my mind, and I keep thinking about grammar rules like articles, prepositions, and sentence structure. Because of this, I cannot understand properly. I also forget vocabulary very quickly.
Sometimes I feel that I will never be able to learn English or continue my education like this.
I have heard many people say: “Start reading. First read simple things, then go to advanced level.” But I don’t understand where to start. Which books or resources should I follow? What is the proper starting point? What is the roadmap for reading?
My main goal right now is to learn academic English so that I can understand my science subjects and other academic books in English easily.
Please guide me. Thank you.
I started using a dictionary that also has a translation and nested-definition feature. I don't get lost in the definitions anymore, and I can study really quickly. Give it a try — see if it works for you, too. It's mobile app "FAST Study."
