"I am good at English, am I advanced or fluent?"
Normally, “fluent” refers to being a native speaker. While “fluency” refers simply to correct usage, “fluent” usually means a high degree of native-like proficiency. “Advanced” describes a high level of proficiency, usually well above beginner (taking a few classes).
Advanced means highly developed, complex; also, being of a higher level than others. Fluent means that you are able to express yourself effortlessly and readily in all language situations; your English is always smooth and flowing.

📖Today's story (reading practice):📖
Why is there a war?
By: Authors Hub
It was my first day at school. I felt nervous and scared. I went
to all my classes with no friends. It felt like no one cared.
I listened anxiously to all the lessons and waited for lunchbreak at one. Then finally the bell rang. It was time to talk and have fun.
In the lunchline I met a new friend who wore a hijab on her head, and though I am Jewish, we got along fine, and I was so relieved when she said, "Sit with us, at our table. " She pointed
to the one next to the door.
So I agreed, and took my tray and was about to walk with her across the floor, when suddenly I felt a nudge. "Hey, I saw you on the bus," said a tall girl in a long skirt. "I see your Jewish
star necklace. You should sit with us. "
At that moment I looked around, and that's when I noticed, to
my surprise, The nations of the world, isolating themselves.
That's what I saw through my own eyes.
The Spanish only sat with Spanish, the Hindus only with
Hindus, The Russians always with the Russians, and never the
Arabs with the Jews.
I saw the reason why war gets started. Everyone sticks to
their own kind. The lunchroom was a map of the world. Why
was everyone so blind?
And so I turned down this girl, and went with the first, and
there was no enmity. I built a bridge between two worlds when
I sat with those different from me.
Hope you will do the same.

📖Today's story (reading practice):📖
The Bogey-Beast
By: Flora Annie Steel
There was once a woman who was very, very cheerful, though she had little to make her so; for she was old, and poor, and lonely. She lived in a little bit of a cottage and earned a scant living by running errands for her neighbours, getting a bite here, a sup there, as reward for her services. So she made shift to get on, and always looked as spry and cheery as if she had not a want in the world.
Now one summer evening, as she was trotting, full of smiles as ever, along the high road to her hovel, what should she see but a big black pot lying in the ditch!
"Goodness me!" she cried, "that would be just the very thing for me if I only had something to put in it! But I haven't! Now who could have left it in the ditch?"
And she looked about her expecting the owner would not be far off; but she could see nobody.
"Maybe there is a hole in it," she went on, "and that's why it has been cast away. But it would do fine to put a flower in for my window; so I'll just take it home with me."
And with that she lifted the lid and looked inside. "Mercy me!" she cried, fair amazed. "If it isn't full of gold pieces. Here's luck!"
And so it was, brimful of great gold coins. Well, at first she simply stood stock-still, wondering if she was standing on her head or her heels. Then she began saying:
"Lawks! But I do feel rich. I feel awful rich!"
After she had said this many times, she began to wonder how she was to get her treasure home. It was too heavy for her to carry, and she could see no better way than to tie the end of her shawl to it and drag it behind her like a go-cart.
"It will soon be dark," she said to herself as she trotted along. "So much the better! The neighbours will not see what I'm bringing home, and I shall have all the night to myself, and be able to think what I'll do! Mayhap I'll buy a grand house and just sit by the fire with a cup o' tea and do no work at all like a queen. Or maybe I'll bury it at the garden foot and just keep a bit in the old china teapot on the chimney-piece. Or maybe—Goody! Goody! I feel that grand I don't know myself."
By this time she was a bit tired of dragging such a heavy weight, and, stopping to rest a while, turned to look at her treasure.
And lo! it wasn't a pot of gold at all! It was nothing but a lump of silver.
She stared at it, and rubbed her eyes, and stared at it again.
"Well! I never!" she said at last. "And me thinking it was a pot of gold! I must have been dreaming. But this is luck! Silver is far less trouble—easier to mind, and not so easy stolen. Them gold pieces would have been the death o' me, and with this great lump of silver—"
So she went off again planning what she would do, and feeling as rich as rich, until becoming a bit tired again she stopped to rest and gave a look round to see if her treasure was safe; and she saw nothing but a great lump of iron!
"Well! I never!" says she again. "And I mistaking it for silver! I must have been dreaming. But this is luck! It's real convenient. I can get penny pieces for old iron, and penny pieces are a deal handier for me than your gold and silver. Why! I should never have slept a wink for fear of being robbed. But a penny piece comes in useful, and I shall sell that iron for a lot and be real rich—rolling rich."
So on she trotted full of plans as to how she would spend her penny pieces, till once more she stopped to rest and looked round to see her treasure was safe. And this time she saw nothing but a big stone.
"Well! I never!" she cried, full of smiles. "And to think I mistook it for iron. I must have been dreaming. But here's luck indeed, and me wanting a stone terrible bad to stick open the gate. Eh my! but it's a change for the better! It's a fine thing to have good luck."
So, all in a hurry to see how the stone would keep the gate open, she trotted off down the hill till she came to her own cottage. She unlatched the gate and then turned to unfasten her shawl from the stone which lay on the path behind her. Aye! It was a stone sure enough. There was plenty light to see it lying there, douce and peaceable as a stone should.
So she bent over it to unfasten the shawl end, when—"Oh my!" All of a sudden it gave a jump, a squeal, and in one moment was as big as a haystack. Then it let down four great lanky legs and threw out two long ears, nourished a great long tail and romped off, kicking and squealing and whinnying and laughing like a naughty, mischievous boy!
The old woman stared after it till it was fairly out of sight, then she burst out laughing too.
"Well!" she chuckled, "I am in luck! Quite the luckiest body hereabouts. Fancy my seeing the Bogey-Beast all to myself; and making myself so free with it too! My goodness! I do feel that uplifted—that GRAND!"—
So she went into her cottage and spent the evening chuckling over her good luck

Seeing Red (The First Day of School) by: Zenryhao
Everyone loves the first day of school, right? New year, new classes, new friends. It's a day full of potential and hope, before all the dreary depressions of reality show up to ruin all the fun. I like the first day of school for a different reason, though. You see, I have a sort of power. When I look at people, I can...sense a sort of aura around them. A colored outline based on how long that person has to live. Most everyone I meet around my age is surrounded by a solid green hue, which means they have plenty of time left.A fair amount of them have a yellow-orangish tinge to their auras, which tends to mean a car crash or some other tragedy. Anything that takes people "before their time" as they say.
The real fun is when the auras venture into the red end of the spectrum, though. Every now and again I'll see someone who's basically a walking stoplight. Those are the ones who get murdered or kill themselves. It's such a rush to see them and know their time is numbered. With that in mind, I always get to class very early so I can scout out my classmates' fates. The first kid who walked in was basically radiating red. I chuckled to myself. Too damn bad, bro. But as people kept walking in, they all had the same intense glow. I finally caught a glimpse of my rose-tinted reflection in the window, but I was too stunned to move. Our professor stepped in and locked the door, his aura a sickening shade of green.

Valuable Jeffery
By: 💎
Jeffery goes to school just like everyone else. He helps his father sell flowers when he returns from school. He goes out with his friends on the weekends and plays with them.
To everyone else, Jeffery seems like an ordinary boy. However, he bears a secret, a secret that keeps his father's flower shop together. Everything he does and everything he says is reflected on a magical piece of carpet that was passed down for generations to his father. The reflection is in the form of flowers, for every time he says or does something good, a lively flower grows and for every time he says or does something bad, a rotten flower grows.
Consequently, Jeffery was known as a polite young boy and his father was a famous florist because of the vast amounts of varied flowers he always had in stock despite the season. This went on for years. Until one day, Jeffrey's father, the florist, noticed rotten flowers growing all over the magic carpet. These flowers looked rather pale and withered unlike the vibrant, colorful ones he is used to waking up to each day. This continued for a month, yet the father did not want to bother his son with this as the son seemed to have bigger issues. What about the mother? Why didn't she talk to him? You see, poor Jeffery lost his mother at a really young age and his father was not much of a talker.
After 3 months, when all the lively flowers ran out and the florist finally decided to talk to his son, the son communicated with his father like never before, as if he was longing for someone to talk to. It was school, work and some of his friends abandoning him that made Jeffrey anxious and stressed. After that day, the father started to notice that the colorful flowers started to grow again and the rotten ones started dwindling in number.

A phrase to describe someone who is cognitively degenerating. Synonym of "going off the deep end". Can have varying degrees of severity. Reference to the song "Hey You" by Pink Floyd. The line "and the worms ate into his brain" makes no sense in an otherwise linear and literal narration throughout the lyrics.

Hedging
- The use of linguistic devices to express hesitation or uncertainty as well as to demonstrate politeness and indirectness
- Often used to soften one's words and to avoid making a direct statement, or committing to a particular action or decision
E.g., journalists use the term "allegedly"
People use hedging due to these several reasons:
- to minimize the possibility of other academic opposing claims that are being made
- to conform to the currently accepted style of academic writing
- to enable the author to devise a politeness strategy where they can acknowledge that there may be flaws in their claims

difference between future simple and future continuous?
As u must know,To describ two simultaneous actions in a time in future we all use FUTURE TENSE .So in that SIMPLE FUTURE is commonly used for the actions going to held in future and FUTURE CONTINUOUS is used only when the longer continuous action is to be emphasized or happen.
Rule difference:
SIMPLE= Subject+Will/Shall+Verb+Object.
CONTINUOUS=Subject+Will be/Shall be+verb+ing+object

How to understand present perfect tense?
As @tight saddle said in another category:
Present perfect is mostly for:
- general experience - Have you ever seen this film? Have you read this book yet? I've never been to Japan. I've lived here for 7 years. (up until now; in case of the last example: it may change soon, e.g. because I plan to move out next month)
- things that happened recently (and affect the present/cause and effect relation) - I've already done my homework. (=it's done) I've just finished cleaning. (=it's tidy) I've broken my leg. (=my leg is still broken)
Thanks!!
A video about the nature of stress-timed versus syllable-timed languages. In this video we will have a look at the feature that govern stress-timed languages such as English. Here, the main rule is: keep the same timing from one stressed syllable to the next! This means all the syllables in between have to be said faster and as a result we have ...
"My mother has given bird me in 1990" - its move in past, but now me have results -me
Or "I have lived in the UK since 2010" In a past i moved to UK, but now i living in UK
Fluent, im correct?
gave birth
bc we have a certian year
like we don't have a certian time
"I've broken my leg because of him many times."

To me in the states “not fluent” sorry “My mom gave me a bird in 1990”
Yes that’s correct
Yes sounds right to me
Or you can simply say I’ve been living in the Uk for over 10 years . This would be more natural. No one is going to care about the year unless it’s on an application.

I find using flash cards helpful to learn English
Flashcards are a great way to quiz yourself throughout the day – and you can carry them almost anywhere. You can put a short, simple term or concept on one side of the card (for example, “Canada Pension Plan”), and the related explanation or definition on the other side.
You might choose to put both English and non-English terms on the front and/or back of the card if it helps you memorize the English version. Visuals are often a powerful learning aide, so make good use of diagrams, charts and pictures that will reinforce learning concepts.

Thanks
Thanks dear Sir 😌
Great!
I want a way to save vocabulary
🤣🤣True, it's not even the full thing, there is another part to it.
lol
It is a funny one. People don't really use it, but you could, especially in the UK. I.e. if you work at a shop and someone asks if they could have a 10% discount, you could say "Yep, Bob's your uncle." (Yep, no problem.) You could probably actually find an excuse to tell everyone that Bob's their uncle! 🙂

Hi! I’m an English teacher from Norway who teaches the Norwegian equivalent of high school for adult learners. After a couple of years of on-and-off remote teaching I have some material lying around that I plan to convert into YouTube videos over the summer. Today I put out the first two videos. I’ll try to publish twice a week until school resumes in August - anyone and everyone is welcome to join me: https://youtu.be/lV-OnQUjptE
The topics covered will get progressively harder, with a general focus on grammar (as linguistics is my Master’s specialisation).
(PS: if there’s a rule against self promotion or something in this disc, I am legitimately sorry. Please know that I have no desire for monetary gain from this as I only plan on doing this as a passion project to keep me busy during the summer months)
Great stuff! Nice to see a fellow high school teacher here.
Nice to know there are many teachers here. I teach ESL to early graders. I need to maintain my English skills and keep practicing to make it better. Love learning from all here. It's nice making friends and connecting with you here.

Video about subject-verb agreement / concord in English:
Not sure i agree with the "ripped off" definition. Doesn't always involve stealing
Words have different meaning and never just one. If you are more comfortable with the word “cheating” and not “stealing.” However they essentially mean the same thing. If someone tries to cheat you out of something, they are essentially trying to steal from you.

Indeed. Words have different meanings and never just one. We should define them based on the context and content of the reading material.
