you have free time for everythin. you can do what do you want.

thorny steeple
#

well do what you think is best

#

go with your heart

craggy sphinx
#

Yes,it cannot disappear

this force varies inversely with the square of the distance, which weakens significantly over large distances

#

this does not mean that this force can cause movement

#

for example, if you apply force to move a cabinet, then you need to overcome the force of friction in order for the cabinet to start moving

#

it is also a force, but a very small one

thorny steeple
#

I can't speak to that, as it's well outside my wheelhouse.

craggy sphinx
#

yes, I can organize this, I think everyone will be interested

thorny steeple
#

be the observer

craggy sphinx
# thorny steeple well think more and talk less

If you trust only your heart, which means that you rely on your emotions, then this is not entirely reasonable.

you must understand what you are doing and what it can lead to. It's also bad because you don't benefit from it. You are making the same mistake by wasting your time

#

so I think that "following your heart" is not entirely correct

thorny steeple
craggy sphinx
#

no, this is not what stoicism teaches

#

I also think that stoicism is not good

thorny steeple
#

well then what do you think is the right one

thorny steeple
#

I think a balance of the two, appropriate to the situation, is a good approach.

#

Some moments call more for emotions, while others are more cerebral in nature.

#

nice

#

Yeah.

#

As long as they're appropriate, obviously. 😆

#

Interesting title; it's piqued my interesting, for sure.

#

I'm listening. Give me a moment to listen and consider it.

#

is he a european?

#

He's British.

#

Specifically, it sounds like he's from England.

#

interesting OSM what do you think he is teaching

#

*frantically types counterargument*

#

He poses the question, "why are those words considered to be advanced English? Why is 'detrimental' more advanced [than bad]?

Oh dear. His conclusion is that they're advanced simply because they're "used with less frequency". I will absolutely push back on this!

My stance:

Words are more advanced because they are more nuanced, more complicated, are more specific to a use-case (e.g., philosophy), and, perhaps, the pronunciation of the word is harder (e.g., hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia). The frequency at which a word is said holds no relevance to the complexity of a word's meaning(s).

#

Not yet.

thorny steeple
#

OSM are you a history man

#

To rephrase: I posit that a word is advanced because it is more complex and more nuanced.

'bad' = very simple, with a general meaning. There is some colloquial use of it (e.g., 'badass'), but it's essentially a basic general-purpose word.

'detrimental' = much more nuance! If something is detrimental, it implies that it's damaging in some way (e.g., to one's health) and adds emphasis to the 'bad'-nature of it.

#

Example:

"My morality is bad."

This indicates the person's morality is simply not in alignment with what is good. It doesn't indicate damage; it's simply 'bad'.

"My morality is detrimental."

Much more nuance! Now this person is implying that his or her morality is so bad that it's detrimental — that is to say — damaging in some way, such as to his or her health or lifestyle, or perhaps even other people. There's much more nuance.

#

what do you think about morality and ethics OSM

thorny steeple
thorny steeple
thorny steeple
#

It just so happened to evolve into a place I could also talk about philosophy, which was a nice happenstance. 🙂

#

nice

#

you are a man of determination

#

So, this guy in the video does raise a good point, which I'll paraphrase and fill out with my own words:

Essentially, while using more nuanced, 'advanced' words is at times very useful (e.g., in a field of study), it's true that a lot of people don't know or sufficiently understand the more advanced words you might use. Furthermore, it's possible that, due to the accuracy of the word connected to the thought or feeling, there's more room to get it wrong, leading to miscommunication and perhaps even arguments (the bad kind).

Actually, you can find evidence of this during debate, when it's a good idea to avoid definitional issues by clearly defining the word together, such that everyone knows what they're referring to. Have you ever had a heated discussion with somebody, only to find out you two had a totally different idea of what a word meant?

#

As an analogy, you can think of it like this:

You and your fellow students are in class. Your tutor is at the front, and there's a whiteboard next to her. She writes huge words on it with a broad-stroked marker.

Welcome to class.

You all understand, because the words are clear and easier to see, due to the clarity of the edges of the individual letters.

Now, the tutor writes in teeny-tiny writing, using a more accurate, but thin, marker.

Welcome to class.

Few can see the words. People have to squint. Some can understand, most can't. Some guess, most guess wrong, some are close. There's a general sense of confusion in the room.

#

While the small letters were fine and more detailed, they were much harder to see and read.

thorny steeple
# thorny steeple So, this guy in the video does raise a good point, which I'll paraphrase and fil...

Lol, that reminds me of a very funny video I watched once.
it was titled something like "stop using Hi and Hello, use these words instead", and one of the so-called "advanced words" was literally "Bika Boo".
I mean, imagine yourself meeting someone and instead of casually saying "Hi", or "Hello", you say, "Bika Boo". 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
I genuinely encourage people to be skeptical about from whom are they learning English.

thorny steeple
#

"I genuinely encourage people to be skeptical about from whom are they learning English."

I think this is a great attitude to have, provided it doesn't lead to: "I'm skeptical! ...well, screw college, these teachers are liars, I'm just gonna [illegal thing] all day!"

#

I think scepticism is very healthy. I've lived my life as a sceptic. I think there's a negative connotation with the word 'sceptic', as though we're all nasty basement-dwelling fiends of the night. A sceptic is simply a person who holds back the addition of new knowledge into their brain, until satisfactorily compelling evidence or 'proof' is given or found.

#

Sorry, I've just realised I've been ranting for a while. 😆

thorny steeple
thorny steeple
#

The only thing which comes to mind, is to set yourself a challenge to learn and use at least 1 word every day. Even if you're just telling someone "Today, I learned the word [word], which means [meaning]." But, if you can, try to naturally include it into your speech.

If you've got any friends who're learning English, perhaps you could quiz each other on some advanced words and their definitions. You could come up with a point system and make a game of it.

thorny steeple

well but your wiseness is indeed a sign of a person that has the motivation to change

# thorny steeple He poses the question, "*why* are those words considered to be advanced English?...

i think that words cant be related to any of English level , cuz you can even compare that situation with you mother tongue, for example there is the words “Дифференциация» and “разделение» in russian , tbf i didn’t even know the first one cuz it’s not popular and no one use that . therefore there are no “advanced words” there are popular and unpopular words

#

i’d like to say that i tried to learn these “advanced words” , too, but it didn’t make any sense cuz native speakers speak the way they want to and most often they use avverage words, why should they spend their energy to say a difficult word like “idiosyncratic” insteada “unique”. it doesn’t make any sence for em

Your argument seems to be:

  1. Words cannot be related to any English level.
  2. The classroom situation applies to other languages.
  3. Therefore, there are no advanced words.

The first premise (1) is false, because words can be and frequently are related to an English level; this is commonplace in academics. Paraphrasing your conclusion within a premise doesn't necessarily make your argument more compelling.

The second premise (2) is true. I assume you're referring to the classroom situation and not another situation. However, I made no claim that this wasn't true; in-fact, I had assumed this was a given. While the situation I described used English to illustrate the contrast between the big and small writing, the scenario itself was not specifying the English language, but "words".

The conclusion then brings me right back around to the earlier points I made, thus I find your argument unconvincing. Have I misunderstood you? If so, I apologise.

Philosophy typically asks the big questions. Who are we? How do we think? How do we communicate? What is the nature of existence? What does it mean? What is the nature of knowledge and can we really know something? What is reality and does it exist as we know it? What is the nature of being? What is religious belief and is there a god or gods? And so on it goes. Philosophy encompasses a lot of different views and studies, but I generally see it as asking the big questions and pondering them deeply.

A philosopher is one who studies these things, usually academically. Whether or not you could consider a non-academic person who philosophises on a regular basis a philosopher is probably a point of contention, but I'm inclined to believe they are, although I'm admittedly biased, due to my continued and now aggressive interest in philosophy.

while it's true that a sense of self can be challenged by various factors, including brain injuries, the pursuit of meaning in philosophy often transcends individual experiences. even in the face of identity challenges, the human curiosity to understand existence remains a powerful force. perhaps, the search for meaning serves as a compass, guiding us through the complexities of identity, even when that identity itself is in flux.

philosophy can guide us, but do we shape our sense of self through the search for meaning, or is it a reflection of what we already understand? maybe it's the back-and-forth between seeking answers and evolving self that keeps us exploring the mystery of our existence.

# dense agate yes, I am not debunking what you said, your statement is true.

Yeah, I understand it's just what ChatGPT suggested. It tends to repeat a lot, then go off on a tangent. 😆 Unless I'm mistaken. I'm assuming it's ChatGPT, because a) it looks very familiar and b) you've said you're a beginner in English on your profile, yet you've shown really, really good English here.

thorny steeple
#

This is actually a really frustrating part of the world in which we live, with AI being so prevalent and accessible, you never quite know for sure whether someone is using AI, or whether someone is AI. I'm finding it progressively harder not to make assumptions like I did above.

#

then osm how did we come to develop philosophy

thorny steeple
# thorny steeple then osm how did we come to develop philosophy

It's usually said that western philosophy began with Socrates (ancient Greek philosopher, around 300BCE, I think), and that he's the 'grandfather of western philosophy.' However, I'm not sure where it truly started, and I'm not sure anybody knows that for sure.

incorrect, although my profile indicates a "beginner" level on English, that role is randomly picked. Due to never assessing my English level through a test I can't really tell what my level is. But when it comes to philosophy and finding the "self" I do have some moderate knowledge from books and articles i've read, from Descartes, Kant, all the way to the Buddhists. So there is no need for me to rely on any AI for information, let it be ChatGPT or other alternatives.

thorny steeple
#

Then again, you asked how we came to develop it, not necessarily how it came to be. So, I think it's correct to say that we developed philosophy through thousands of years of asking and tackling big questions. Plato built upon the work of Socrates, then Aristotle built upon the work of Plato, etc. We have built our philosophical understanding on the understanding of all those who came before.

To be honest, I'm not much of a book reader. I usually get my information from other sources. I'll read online, but that's as far as I tend to go. I struggle to focus on simply sitting down and reading a book; it's not stimulating enough for me.

Most of my philosophy is from the many philosophers and philosophical debates on YouTube (listened to them for a few years now), various presentations on YouTube, philosophical groups and chats online (e.g., here), some texts I've downloaded (e.g., Plato's Apology), various websites which go into some things (e.g., fallacies and cognitive biases), and even sometimes ChatGPT.

I think this was shown to me yesterday, but I passed, because Chomsky decided to speak in French for ages, and I don't speak French. 😆 I might give it another go, at some point.

Although I've found myself interested in morality and ethics, I think it's fair to say my interest mainly lies in logic, religion, and various metaphysical things like extraterrestrials (all the implications and possibilities thereof) and the simulation hypothesis. But, because of these things, I tend to get into epistemology and language. It really just depends where my mind takes me and what my interest is at the time. Lately, I'm especially focused on logic.

dense agate
thorny steeple
#

A problem I have with remembering the people, is that it's a lot to remember. I think I've forgotten most of what I learned about Aristotle. I often confuse the people, so I'll remember details about Nietzsche but it's actually stuff about Aristotle.

#

Except Socrates. I find him very interesting. I immediately found him fascinating after I was captivated by Plato's Apology.

But, you don't know all the ins and outs of the people who led to the creation and development of the phone. You don't need to, because you have the phone. You can appreciate the origins, perhaps remember some names and some interesting details, but for the most part, you have the phone.

dense agate
thorny steeple
#

So I do pick up the odd thing.

#

I just don't focus on it, at least not yet.

#

I find everything else too compelling and distracting. 😆

#

Most of my time, these days, is spent obsessing over logic.

#

Specifically, argumentation.

dense agate
thorny steeple
#

Inductive and deductive reasoning and arguments. The formulation of arguments via premises and the conclusion. Cognitive biases, like confirmation bias. Logical fallacies, like ad hominem and argumentum ad populum, argumentation techniques like sleight of hand, the classical laws of logic, principles like the principle of charity, and whatever else I'm surely forgetting.

#

Oh, and the Socratic Method, which I admittedly have a very limited understanding in, but what I have learned has been very valuable. Essentially, argumentation through dialogue; through questioning and getting to the crux of the issue in what I assume includes a charitable way.

#

I've been able to help others and myself by looking at how I think and how I conclude things.

dense agate
#

hmmm, I think this goes not only for logic but also critical thinking, but have you also dived into rationality ?

thorny steeple
#

Is critical thinking a category of philosophy? I assumed it was simply part of logic, by way of reasoning.

Not looked into rationality, is that a category of philosophy? I might have inadvertently touched on it, I'm not sure. What does it entail?

Damn, looking it up, it looks like I've been really interested in rationality for ages and not realised.

born in 1900 and lived through World War I and the Spanish Flu in 1928 The economy is doing well, I hope nothing negative occurs in the upcoming year. In 1929, for example, the stock market crashed, and in the early 1930s, people were barely able to afford food but were still thankful to be alive. 1939: World War II begins. I hope we stay out of this European conflict. On November 7, 1941, the Japanese strike Pearl Harbor. A few years after the United States enters the war and joins the army in 1945, the war ends.

The only people who can stop them are the Jews. If they don't stop it, anti-Semitism will increase, it's that simple. Our best threat and weapon right now is anti-Semitism. This isn't a discussion of who will stop Israel, it's about your faulty reasoning for hating or not supporting an entire people based on the actions of some.

"If they don't stop it, anti-Semitism will increase"

If people continue to develop such unchecked illogical views, yes. But this isn't the discussion.

"Our best threat and weapon right now is anti-Semitism."

Why? If I shoot my enemy, does it matter whether I hate him, or does it matter that my enemy is no longer a threat? It seems like you're just using this as an excuse to be prejudiced.

#

Isn't this how democracy works?

thorny steeple
#

no mate that's authoritarian government

#

Democracy is a system of government in which state power is vested in the people or the general population of a state. According to the United Nations, democracy "provides an environment that respects human rights and fundamental freedoms, and in which the freely expressed will of people is exercised."

serene birch
#

isn't it USA father of democracy?

thorny steeple
#

Authoritarianism is a political system characterized by a controlling government and the rejection of democracy, human rights, and political plurality. It involves the use of strong central power to preserve the political status quo, and reductions in the rule of law, separation of powers, and democratic voting.

serene birch
#

It is basic math

thorny steeple
serene birch
#

If they're still fighting blood, This means that a large proportion of the public supports it. If the people do not want it but the government does it by force, this means tyranny and happens in places where there is no democracy. If there is tyranny, why doesn't America bring democracy there instead of send weapons? I think the American government is also trapped under Jewish tyranny.

#

It's very sad. For years, they made us fight the Nazis in games and movies, they made us hate, now they are acting like Nazis.

#

Everything we were made to believe was based on a lie.

#

Normally, when someone commits murder, we take them and put them in prison for years, and in some places they are even executed. But in Israel and Palastine, if you are an Israeli and you kill a Palestinian, you do not receive any punishment and you can roam the streets as freely. But if you throw stones at them to protect your home, mother your family, you will either be imprisoned for years or killed. There is tons of evidence and videos on the internet.

I don't think I'm eligible to answer this, but here I go anyway.

There's nothing wrong with you, but you just need little changes in the way you approach I guess.

Firstly understand what kind of women you're interested in and find out if you like someone, instead of just reaching randomly.

It's understandable that you're nervous, but if you like someone, try to reach out (i doesn't matter if it's gonna work out or not, but atleast you have to give it a try.) And women most times expect you to reach out first, so you gotta do that.

And try to built up confidence and self-esteem, I mean it attracts others to you easily.

But if you don't wanna change, you can be just the way you are, the right person will come eventually and will accept you just the way you are, but even for that person to come in to your life, I guess you need to initiate first, I'm not sure, I just think so tho.

Anyways good luck, just work on your communication skills and I hope it'll work out for you soon.

You can add (less/more) before using the word "likely" to replace the word "probably" to have more precision

Think of 'can' (to be able to) as just giving you (or informing you of ) an option in your life. Winning is an option for you. It does not attach any probability or possibility. You are able to win the race. However with that option, there are many conditions that may affect your ability to win. This is the context of the conversation. For example i can say to you.. 'You can win the basketball game, but i find it unlikely as you have short legs'. Or ' you can win the race, but you will need to practice every day'. Parents just generally say to their kids.. 'You can win the race', but they know in their minds that there is a high likelihood that the are probably faster kids in the race' is just encouragement. You have to be in it to win it.

Yeah that makes way more sense to me when you put it that way

yes, he may decide that he really wants to win, but this also depends on external factors

Anyone preparing for IELTS?

mornin

#

i have a doubt

#

in here we have some 'knowledge division', but

#

How can we define what level we are at?

#

from A1 to C2

#

I really don't if this is the correct chat to ask these type of questions

civic reef
#

but you can think about some very visible things, like maybe someone reads books in english, and those books are written in native-targeted language, so then i would assume that person is likely to be anywhere from B2 to C2

#

what makes all of that complicated is probably that it doesnt have to be balanced, so someone might be a great reader with a very wide vocabulary, but they have anxiety while speaking, then thats difficult to judge

i understand

I believe this is my situation. Lol

Yeah human life is more important but here's is the thing What if we had to fight our land to be free, not get killed or raped? We had to fight in this kind of situation

#

I mean not always the most important thing is human life
