In your syllabus you provided above, they describe those authors' works (or writings) as being part of the literary period titled "17th century canonical works". The canonical works are special in the eyes of the teachers and academics, as they believe they shaped and formed literature and language into the future, it provided insights into the life and times of that period.

Still, if the result come out to be always more or less the same, the fluctuations may be dismissed as innocuous. If not, people are prone to, due to the lack of any rough, sequential explanation, attributing the phenomenon as something... pseudoscientific and ever making up random theories in turn prone to such norms as said in step 1.
