I’ll try not to be political, so let me frame it differently. Imagine two experienced coders. Person A writes JavaScript and person B writes Python. They’re so deep in their own worlds that they can’t even talk without throwing insults. Like if you don’t use this language or agree with this approach, you’re destroying the world. I’m just thinking, hold on, how is writing code in one language destroying the world? And then they hit me with, oh, so you’re a neo fascist! After a few exchanges, I’m just like, please excuse me, I’ll see myself out. Thanks for your time.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in June that the increased use of AI tools would likely lead to further job cuts, particularly through automating repetitive and routine tasks.

"This latest move signals that Amazon is likely realising enough AI-driven productivity gains within corporate teams to support a substantial reduction in force," said Sky Canaves, an eMarketer analyst.

Amazon shares rose 1.2% to $226.97 on Monday.

I guess not yet with a keyboard like a human, but please understand that a future OTA update could fix this. Not only could it code, but it could also teach you or anyone in your home how to code, learn a new language, or almost anything. It's like having a 24/7 companion. It's also extremely power-efficient, probably costing around $1 per day to run. It currently has a runtime of 4 hours and can charge itself. A future version could have an all-day battery life. The possibilities are endless, and this is just the beginning.

And if they ever take over, or if we let them, I just hope they make sure everyone has the basics first. For example, if someone's sick and goes to a hospital anywhere in the world, they should get proper treatment, truly anywhere. If someone's hungry, they should get food. If someone's thirsty, they should have clean water no matter where they are. I could go on, but if they can't even guarantee the basics in a post-AGI world, that'd be beyond disappointing.

Also, I understand that we will still have countries like China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and others. I just hope AI will figure out what humans have repeatedly failed to do.

Hi all,

I have been working as programmer for one and a half decade. And some part of me feels like dead or empty. what i mean by that, i am starting to lost my passion to programming. Just doing it because it pays the bill.

I programmed for about the same period of time, and one day said... That's it, I give up. I quit my contract and started to build my house. I don't remeber what I was planning on doing post programming, but I started to build my house which took 2 years from that point. Also about 5 months later I started my Masters in Project Management, which was just a random decision because I saw an advertisment in the newpaper from a local university. Almost immediately I was coincidentally given a contracted job as the executive of information management for a government department here, which lasted 8 years. Also I concurrently ended up going into a partnership with a farmer and wrote a cattle management application which I marketed for 6 years before selling that business. (Oh now I remember what I was going to do). With my Analysis skills I ended up as a management consultant for businesses wishing to certify to the standard ISO 9001, so I had multiple clients I helped document their business processes, and also audited businesses. There is another world out there that you can use your skills with, without needing to be programming. I'm sure you have been through a lot of industries by now, and could apply your skills in any of those fields, or even just retrain in a whole new profession.

I still love programming, but I direly hate what it is in job market. One either does poor work for "there is no time to explain, just get the ***t done" or miraculously lands a job somewhere people are able to put their work higher than their profits. It's really difficult to work for income only, because working 8 hours a day 5 days a week isn't particularly healthy if you dislike what you do (or worse, consider it to be a useless work).
So, I quit last week, and I still have to figure out what to do next. Sure, I don't think the world is solely about programming, but I'm uncertain what it is generally about. Recently, I asked myself if I want own house with farm animals, but, no, either I'm direlyt burn out, or I don't care about that.

I have some backup since my wife can also hold household on her income, so that's one of those things that makes things much easier. Not many people have this benefit.

My second kid was born and we needed a bigger place to live. We looked around for a suitable place, but it took us about 1 year before we found a block of land (we looked at houses and land, but nothing really made us happy). The land had a view, was 300m from a school, and was the right shape and size for us. I then spent a year drawing up plans on a $50 CAD program. My hobby was always drawing plans as a kid for big buildings and street layouts. I started with meter intervals and got the shape. Then learned how the buildings were really constructed with sizes, such as brick lengths etc. I converted it and made the rooms the size I felt optimal, and did the wirning diagrams etc using smart wiring, with cat5e comms and coax for videos. Then did the project manmagement on it and baasically read how it all goes together and either contracted or helped in the tasks, such as wiring up the steel in the concrete, or laying bricks etc. I had already done carpentry as a hobby away from the computer and worked on hanging doors and fitting out features etc. Big stiff I left for the trade teams, as it would take toooo long otherwise. I had alreay stripped and refurnished 2 older houses I had lived in so had learned other different trade components including tiling and paving. You just need to read some books, or these days watch youtube, and its got lots of teaching material on these activities. Just leave licensed stuff to the professionals (electrical and plumbing or whatever else is regulated)

This is my main recommendation for upcoming computer folk. Learn a language, sure, but its more important now for the future at least to be be moving straight into design and business analysis. Take a unit in Human behaviour. Understand how to communicate with business users at all levels from data entry to CEOs with confidence, low bias, and how to negotiate. It is important to be able to not only meet everyones requirements and have those documented and included in a design, but to convince everyone that their requirements are being met in the design. Listen to everyone, absorb the meetings, and speak to stakeholders individually rather than as a group. Individually you can show what they want to see without others asking how it fits their needs and such meetings end in mayhem. Individual meetings are tailored to the needs of each person you speak with, and if you get them happy, then they will sign off on the design once you have finished incorporating all stakeholders requirements. Its a challenge, but just as much fun as doing the coding, and likely going to keep you in a job for many more years.

Engineers naturally tend to think within a box. Holding hammer forces them to look on everything either as something to smash or something to nail in. Problem is they're missing key point - AI WILL TAKE THE LOWER LEVELS. It means, engineering profession will be something different from what it is now. Maybe it will be a goddamn "neural network persuader-lawyer" who does nothing but talk and legalize decisions with robots. Maybe it will be something different. It doesn't matter in this topic. What matters is AI in fact will take over that particular role many people nowadays keep calling "software developer".

#

And it's not scary. It's just a bit sad for some people. There stil will be people doing it manually like there are people nowadays writing in assembler or even in binary

alpine brook
#

I once had an assignment to make a GUI app for demonstration purposes. It didn't have any requirements other than to look approximately according to the design and do some dummy operations. So I cheated and used Godot to make it🙃

nocturne remnant
#

xDDDDDD That's rich

#

Pretty much engineering spirit. It works and solves the problem. What's more to ask?

alpine brook
nocturne remnant
#

It could be, yes, but then KISS wouldn't be there. Not to mention ton of other standards of all sort.

alpine brook
#

Yes, this is true. But the standards exist for a reason. Generally speaking engineering is about juggling between meeting the standards while maintaining the minimal cost. That's where creativity and the ability to think out of the box could come in handy

nocturne remnant
#

True. Though, meeting standards itself is for minimizing the cost. There is no other reason to have them.

alpine brook
#

The standards by themselves don't usually care about costs. They state safety considerations, compatibility requirements, considerations about working environment etc.

nocturne remnant
#

And what are those for if not for cutting costs?

alpine brook
#

To not kill people, to guarantee that it will not break after a week... That sort of things

nocturne remnant
#

In my experience that's what was exactly meant by "costs"

#

Making people spend a whole week to read some disastrous code just to be able to add one line into it, is pretty much "a huge price" for "a feature"

alpine brook
#

In that case I agree with you

#

I was actually thinking about engineering a physical thing. Like an electronic device. They have to pass loads of certification (depending on what the device is) and the requirements for that certifications cost money to implement. So as an engineer my task would be to think of a way to make it the cheapest possible way to still meet the minimum requirements.

#

I am generalizing here

#

Hopefully I make sense 🙂

nocturne remnant
#

I already said that you do xD

alpine brook
#

You know what I was thinking the other day? With the first computers people used to input binary machine code manually, then they created assembly language to represent machine code in a more human readable form. Then they created Fortran, C and other languages to make "talking to computers" even easier and made the compiler to convert human understandable code to machine understandable. And if you think about it, AI is just the next logical step to completely illuminate the necessity to talk to computers using special languages and just use your natural language. Thus AI code assistants are just modern compilers. The only step left is to make AI generate code relatable enough so we don't need to proofread it. Then AI can generate executable binaries from normal human language descriptions.

nocturne remnant
#

That's basically what I meant here #💻|programming message

Sure, we will continue to call it "programmer" of some sort, but that will be a rather different profession with a different skillset.

#

The difference at slightest will be like low and high-level programming. Both are about programming, but they're very different. Both in results and the way it feels

It seems impressive but in reality it's just a refined control system. They took real world data and mapped it to the robots limb positions then they trained the model to be able to perform the moves by inverse kinematics and that's what they are showcasing, a cat is much more technically impressive than that robot because it learns to move in an extremely computationally efficient way and has path finding capabilities, it is not remotely controlled. The movements of a cat aren't precomputed also, the brain integrates proprioception, vision, and vestibular input to plan motion dynamically, which is something currently technically impossible, there isn't even frontier research on that. Just to say another thing, there isn't even a good theory for controlling actuators like those in a cat. Unitre literally uses brushless motors. So yeah humans capabilities are still much more impressive. Humans just weigh a lot and average people don't make enough effort to learn those movements, but they are actually very easy to do for an human

#

20kg robot that last like 2 hour, which can do basically nothing except precomputed movements. It can use an LLM for interpreting "vocal comands" but it's basically the same as pressing a button technically, just with more fancy layers

#

The most impressive thing about G1 it's the price

Hahaha : ) Jokes aside, they'll do fine. They're conveniently "battery-charged" at the moment, but even at this point it's not that difficult to switch to ignition fuel system and make it almost 24/7 autonomous

nocturne remnant
#

RC cars and drones work in a similar way. The fastest and long-lasting are always coming with gas engine

#

Okay, maybe fastest come with hybrid system (electricity for acceleration, and fuel for pushing beyond the limit).

shy glade
# austere gate Think about a future where the battery lasts all day and they run faster than Us...

It's not possible on a hardware level. Because we've already reached the maximum energy density of batteries. The only thing you could do is use a diesel generator, but then it makes noise, if you remember, Boston Dynamics already tried that. And it uses electric motors, which are heavy, in general, the robot's frame is basically plastic and aluminum and weighs about 35 kg. Basically, the design is useless on a practical level, it would make much more sense to use a drone in warfare. Things that walk are useless

#

Are there any capable "forward thinkers" in here?

austere gate
nocturne remnant
shy glade
#

Like you usually don't think about it but muscles are non linear actuators with no noise, soft, that self repairs and adapt. Nothing it's as energy dense as muscle while having similar capabilities

#

As far as linguistics is concerned, more specifically "defining accurately, in written English, what is", without ever changing the character construction of the word, and not just "wordplay" rather "real choice" of 2 definitions instead of 1 definition, allowing for true expansion of ones thought processes. Example. White House abbreviated WH and Automatic Transmission abbreviated AT, combined will ALWAYS result in the character combination "what".

austere gate
shy glade
#

See, no current AI will ever give you that result when you ask it what "what" is....

shy glade
#

However, telling a friend "what" can only be... is a different story of limitations.

#

Drones are basically rf controlled ammunitions

#

Any other design makes no sense

austere gate
shy glade
#

Drones are "Doctor abbreviated and the digit one pluralized", at least that was the other definitions.

shy glade
#

The problem are nests

#

Do the drones know what they are yet?

#

It's easier to arm a drone with a net-cutting ammunition than to make Chappie

shy glade
austere gate
shy glade
#

This is way more impressive

#

So, "flying toasters", you mean FL for "Florida", followed by Y for "yes", then the I (the pronoun), of course not forgetting, No Good written as NG, then a space followed by a "t to mark the spot" (or lower case x rotated 45 degrees), the expression "oh!" written as "o", then you have the letter "a" as a participle, followed by street written as ST, and finally (zero political bias here, rather complete characters only) an Eastern Republican group (pluralized), written as the letter ERS? At least that is how I understood the character combination FL+Y+I+NG T+O+A+ST+ERS, maybe I need clarification?

#

And the funny thing is, NO CURRENT AI will ever give you that definition, no matter how accurately you write it (even 100% accurately, as I did) if you ask it what "flying toasters" is. That is a demonstration of AIs perpetual weakness. Fun!

#

If the "forward thinking" is "to much" just let me know.

shy glade
#

language modeling

#

not for the faint of heart

austere gate
shy glade
#

Yup, and you have to PAY chatGPT to have the privilidge of making chatGPT billions, pay them to train its "full of a perpetual weakness" AI, lame.

#

@austere gate I only query Gemini, but even that can never give me the answer I am looking for, as described before, however the compilations of the data continues to grow, and the amassing of "better training data" will never end, the screenshots, printouts, and the best part the "customer word of mouth" parties where we all view this material, its just not shared on Facebook or X. The "customer word of mouth" datasets that Google has NO access to, how splendid!

#

The best advertising ever, simply for accuracy and honesty purposes. Customer word of mouth.

alpine brook
shy glade
#

@alpine brook Yes, that seems current, but the "tons of data" is just a drop in the bucket of potential, and its all based on "accurate training data", and if the "original training data" referenced is only data perceived "one way", then written "one way", the "single character construction way" by the programmers and the ones housing the data, it will always be extremely limited, a perpetual weakness. Just like writing a business plan in English, one way. Correct? However, our "perception" of simply what is written, can change, and then perhaps, just perhaps, the "better training data" can be used to...

#

@alpine brook Also, when the AI is able to correct it errors dynamically and store historical data (such as previous conversations it has had for reference) without a "physical space problem", well, we will see change.

#

Everthing I mention, Gemini has had no choice but to agree with, then it changes, until we have our next session, then I get bored with the "same responses" generated from its, well, limited programming.

#

@alpine brook @austere gate The "master key" of sorts is the writing that never changes, as I have outlined in the previous examples, but takes on a separate idea. No matter what language it is in.

#

Its just "the indisputable proof" of non-change that makes it work.

#

@alpine brook Just like a statement, "You can never have justice without always putting ICE at the end" has no other meaning, by me the transmitter of the data, other than precisely that, graphically. I can NEVER write J+U+S+T+I+C+E without ever complying with the rule that the letters ICE are always at the end. It can always "be argued" verbally, but never proven in writing, again NO BIAS shown here, no political inferrence, just pure logic of character construction. See?

#

@alpine brook Though, as you may understand, Gemini is programmed to "immediately know my intent to be politically biased" as it would reply with those intonations, to the "justice" example, as the printouts show, however immediately correcting itself, after my logic and correction to it, finally realizing its biases and complete and total INABILITY to know my intent ever, and then simply agree with me. See?

You can do something quite simple. Go to LinkedIn and search for jobs right now; that will give you a good sense of the current job market. I cannot predict the future, but given the trend, it seems that soon almost anyone, regardless of their degree, will be able to create their own software or apps. Traditional degrees may not hold the same value they once did. Additionally, if you pay attention, you will notice many large companies are laying off staff, which raises the question of whether traditional white-collar jobs will still exist within the next ten years.

# fierce herald Hej 🙌 ** am studying software engineering and i am in 1.semester, should i cha...

AI in the current state can't do anything complex and it's trained on mostly public code / slop code / tailored code for scoring high on tests which is inferior compared to private code bases. The only worrying thing here is the CEOs / Whatever people thinking they can replace real programmers with AI and adjusting their hiring process accordingly.

Therefore i would personally keep studying programming (if you like it). Unless AI becomes actually good (human-replacement level), you are fine, but may struggle finding junior level jobs during these years.

But, ultimately, if AI is able to generate whatever you want with no mistakes, that would mean that way more fields would get erased, possibly leading to some kind of UBI scenario. But, i think it's very unlikely.

This bubble might be as big as the moon 😆 🫧

#

companies realized they don't need that many people as well. They ain't firing the senior devs though (they will be even more valuable in the future)

when creating a data with unique name(in this case position in a company), should i first check whether position with the same name already exist in the database or not? if i should check first, how should i done this? is it by having two queries where the first one is to check the existence, but im thinking about the performance if using two queries

cunning forge
#

I don't get the point here

nocturne remnant
#

Performance is for balance. If your app demands edge-level uncompromising performance, then you'd consider "2 queries are too much", but in 99%+ cases you have application with adequate requirements and fallback behavior.
i.e. if someone tries to register an account, you're likely gonna provide them some detailed message explaining why they were not able to do so. For that you'd need two branches of logic.

Beside that, your table in the database itself must contain unique constraint that prevents creating duplicate entries. Otherwise, there'll remain space for race condition in the code(if process A creates account with the same name between select and insert happening in process B)

#

Approx code example that would represent the scenario for branches

function createAccount(...input): Account|Error {
    if (accountExists(input.name)) { // fetch from db
return Error("there already exists account with the same name")
    }

    // insert into db
    ...
    return newlyCreatedAccount
}

I don't think "fullstack" nowadays means 1 backend plus 1 frontend languge. But, honestly, you have to consider the job market you're realistically aiming at. If all good opporunities come from PHP, well, there you go. Otherwise, php is not a good language to learn or plan your career in 2025. I've been working with it since php 5.4 up to 8.3 and unless you're in love with it for some reason, I don't see why I'd pick it over, say, golang which beats it in almost every aspect.

p.s.
I'd 100% pick it over python though. That language is still stuck in php 5.6 era, but it's jack of all trades, hence, it's okay for everything. On same level as javascript, I'd say.

# flint tiger what do you think about AWS certifications?

You really need to know that there are aws in your location for work. If all the companies use Ms, then you don't benefit. A broad understanding should be sought to get into your first job. Once you are there, you know what they use. Then work on certifications in the products used within your business. Always try and get the company to pay for certifications as part of your on going training. It helps if you can use it immediately, but if you are not using it at the time of certification, then it is a waste of your time, you will forget it, you may never use it, and it will cost you your own money. As you move from job to job, get the company(s) to pay for these courses. You can then have it on resume, and someone may think that's nice, but not really essential, unless you manage to find a perfect job ad asking for it. Experience is key.

DIAZ CODING PROJECT LOG #001

Alright,

The first step in simplifying a Boolean function is to generate it's minterms. Although I could have just prompted the user for the minterms directly, but I wanted this project to be a challenge and a learning opportunity for me. So I have decided to input a raw Boolean function from the user, and then tokenize it, evaluate it, and accordingly generate it's minterms.

Here's what I did today to achieve this:

  • First I had to parse the input boolean expression and convert it into tokens so to make it ready for the infix-to-postfix conversion.
  • Secondly I implemented the shunting yard algorithm which converts arithmetic and logic into computer-friendly form.
  • Then I evaluated the input function against all eight possible binary combinations using a stack evaluator, and the combinations that yielded 1s were confirmed to be the minterms of the function.
Using this technique I managed to get the minterms of any Boolean function in any form, whether simplified or unsimplified.

I need some help. I want to divide or plan how will I make a web crawler system. Like I've been given a task to scrape/crawl the web and get all the details of AI tools or models and add in a database. So in my mind, only 2 things came, 1. Database schema(what fields would I require, this basically defines what I will be scraping too) 2. Pipeline that scrapes the data (now here I don't know if I need to design own scrapper/crawler or I should go for crawl4AI type of things).
8 weeks enough to give?

In this video, you will be learning Python with these 5 projects, starting at the very beginner level and slowly working our way up to something more advanced. For those who are complete beginners, I'm going to explaining everything as if you've never used Python before and even show you how to install the program and set up you editor. We will ...

Since I have no coding experience, I would like someone to volunteer to make an APK for me using GitHUB.
I'll give you the codes from ChatGPT; all you need to do is frame it and prepare it for installation. It will be a straightforward app. I'll use it as an app addon

#

Can u please help me make it happen?

atomic flame
#

I see, do you know someone who can do that for an android?

atomic flame
#

Okay, all good. 😄
Thanks for your time

#

Is there anyone else who can help me with it? It's a great request. I don't understand a single thing and I'm clueless what to do with the Chat GPT codes. Just want someone to frame the app. It won't take that long I reckon

My bad. So the thing is, I wanna make a third party app for a game called Infinite Flight, which helps me with the captain announcement and other cabin voices with an floating icon. Like I hit a specific button, and it starts playing a desired announcement audio. Something like this:

I don't think anyone will. From the way you explained it, you don't even have working application, and you already want to distribute it. That's not how things work in programming.
You must have android studio.
You must be able to launch your project in emulator under that android studio.
Only then you can talk about building it into apk

#

p.s.
Gagged from apps for airplanes being developed in random discord channel. I could imagine Boeing doing something like that xD

# atomic flame Indeed, but no one cares tbh 😭

There have been two people here who have cared. But its a huge task to develop a program, especially with no specificiation. But if its just a nice picture of a cockpit with some buttons on it that you can click on to make 6 or so messages play, then Thats a valid beginner program. But then calling it third party takes it to a different level again, and far from reality for some strange reason. My daughter was able to build such an app with some help, using VB when she was 7ish. Click on hot spots on the screen and do some actions like display messages etc. I think AI could help you achieve this by using multiple sessions. Just start with the screen displaying the cockpit, then use another session to tell you how to get some buttons, then another to link the clicks to a player that plays the messages. As mentioned before you will need to develop this in Android studio, and develop the screen and test it on the emulator that is built in. Once it appear to be working there, compile it to an .apk and download it on your phone, or device.

Webex is safe. Its developed by Cisco and is used by big business in conjunction with Cisco phone systems and other communications. It was around longer that Zoom or Teams (in my experience of the progression of these systems).

# atomic flame Indeed, but no one cares tbh 😭

Because from what you say, it's almost obvious that (a) you don't know if your (ChatGPT's) app even works, (b) you don't understand that having a working Kotlin program does not mean having a bundleable program and (c) you don't want to learn anything.
Maybe, if I had android studio installed, I would help if not (a) and (b), but then what if you want to fix something? What if you want to add something new? What if these changes don't work as expected and you want to modify them? Are you going to ask me to do all compilation, bundling, etc. for you over and over again?

#

(And it will not work as expected because it's ChatGPT)

leetcode is for problem solving

it's not like you are going to grind a project for 16 hours a day

at least colin (the competitive programmer) teach you stuff

it's like there's unironically a guide on leetcode wich is like 15 years old that already list the basics you should learn... And nah nobody says to you that you have to master the techniques before starting to problem solve

programmers / engineers are usually busy to learn things , might not really spend time hanging out / chatting that often , do not misunderstand it , that does not mean they never (or hate to) do this , it is just rare .

what kind of decent activities do you specifically mean ? (free or paid) technical session / career talk / or anything else ? and again this might also be rare .
