Artificial Intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is concerned with getting computers to do tasks that would normally require human intelligence. AI systems are basically software systems (or controllers for robots) that use techniques such as machine learning and deep learning to solve problems in particular domains without hard coding all possibilities (i.e. algorithmic steps) in software. Due to this, AI started showing promising solutions for industry and businesses as well as our daily lives.

#

AI replaces devs because management is shortsighted and has invested lot of money into AI (chips, data centers, tokens from OAI/Anthropic) and is desperate for that investment to pay off and keep the hype cycle going, so they lay off devs to pay for more investments.

They can’t admit their investment hasn't paid off yet (since management is paid big bucks and that will go away if they admit to their boards and investors this bet hasn't paid off so far) even as the competent devs know that this is just a tool and can’t really replace anyone (for now and most likely in the near future).

If you just take a look at the API pricing for both Chinese DeepSeek and American OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini, you'll understand that if these American labs fail to continue offering more intelligent models, they'll become irrelevant very quickly. I know it's harsh, but that's the reality. If you can use a Chinese model hosted on US servers for dirt cheap, why would you want to pay more when for most day-to-day tasks the difference is negligible?

#

DeepSeek V4-Pro costs roughly $0.435 input and $0.87 output per million tokens, while GPT-5.5 costs $5 input and $30 output, meaning OpenAI is about 11× pricier on input and 34× pricier on output.

# pure copper `AI had lots of money invested by Meta and Google etc. All the other businesses...

The thing here is, a lot of companies have invested in this.

Hyperscalers (Google, Amazon, Meta, Msft) have invested heavily in chips/datacenters AND are funding OAI/Anthropic (Google and Amazon fund Anthropic which then buys credits from Google Cloud, Msft funds OAI which buys Azure server rentals from Msft).
Wall St believes the hype, their stocks go up.

Other companies (smaller tech companies (Oracle, Uber etc.), banks etc.) which

  1. either need to placate their investors who ask them "what are you doing with AI", "why aren't you using AI" or
  2. want their stock to go up
invest in AI. To raise money, they fire people. Wall St likes this since margins (profit/employee) goes up, so stock goes up.

Even Meta (spying on its own employees to train their AI's), Amzn, Msft/LinkedIn have laid off people to raise money for AI investments.

But, the productivity data (studies done by academics/neutral entities/economic research entities) about these tools (LLMs, agents) hasn't seen a meaningful spike so far.

Hyperscalers (in their earning statements) don't really give a clear number about AI revenue, they combine it with revenue from their existing, very successful businesses. They know the direct ROI isn't there.

Anecdotally, talking to devs/people who use these tools, or from my own experience -- this is a cool tool that makes lot of mistakes and is useful to people who understand what they're doing for certain problems but not a panacea.

gray geode
# nocturne remnant I'ma simpol man. To fall into a pit, there must be a hole. The hole is the devs ...

"Devs doing poor job". Any evidence about this general and vague statement?

Even if devs were doing a good job, mgmt will always ask "can we do the same with less" or "how can we further increase profits?"
Mgmt loves reducing costs, since it increases profits. Employees are a costly resource. In the short term, it makes sense to lay off people (given that they assume AI is making the rest of employees more productive). Not sure about long term.

Yes, AI can "commoditize" intelligence/expertise and reduce wages across the board. It could also lead to more jobs (Jevon's paradox). AI is heavily subsidized right now. Will AI be as heavily used once OAI/Anthropic charge the actual cost? Quite a few scenarios.

IMHO in the long term: AI will definitely increase the value of critical thinkers and creative problem solvers (since you need expertise to ask the right questions to these tools and then distinguish nonsense from useful in their long responses).

For the average employee, I'm not sure what will happen.

had a company meeting on ai tools, where a couple of speakers presented their tools

by the end of the meeting, each speaker convinces everyone that we should or even need to use ai agents and tools regularly

it's been like this so I'm chating with this ai in terminal and solving problems that I create for myself for no reason, so you're just using the power of artificial intelligence

#

or like look at this usage of ai agent. I granted my agent access to modify files on my lap and now my agent is sorting my folder and stuff on my laptop so everything is clean and organized. What a tech sort options are not present on modern os , wow

Please help me understand something. Are you arguing that bad developers created the mess, and companies are now using AI to pressure developers into working better and accepting lower pay, even though AI won't fully replace them? If I understood you correctly, then we have to define what a bad dev is. Are we talking about noobs, mediocre developers, or good devs simply producing mediocre stuff?

No matter what the definition is, I don't think we can realistically compare a human with AI. I mean, come on, there's actually no comparison. If I gave you a task and ran thousands of agents in parallel, my bet would be on AI, except for extremely rare and exceptional cases.

Now, even if your exceptional devs did exceptional jobs, there's no guarantee they'll get to keep their jobs because the future is extremely uncertain. If you take a look at the data, Meta just laid off 8,000 employees recently. I'm sure a lot of exceptional people got laid off as well.

If you asked me what I think about the future, I'd say every sector where human intelligence is needed will probably be embedded and upgraded with AI, and it's just a matter of time. Critical thinking is an important skill, but I'm afraid it's not something that won't get replaced by AI, let's say in a decade or two.

Our vanity as a human race will be challenged, and we must be ready to tackle it judiciously with clarity, patience, and wisdom. Otherwise, nothing can stop our demise, which we're building with our own hands.

nocturne remnant
#

I think you're half-answering your own question. 1000 agentic AIs will do the job better, likely, yet the price will be a bit exaggerating. Which means, if that can be done by 100 agents? By 10? By 2? If that "acceptable" plank is low enough for devs, than the number of agents required to do the same job is also low. Hence, it's nearly as cheap if not cheaper. Therefore, poor human job replaced by a little agentic tools effort.

companies are now using AI to pressure developers into working better and accepting lower pay, even though AI won't fully replace them

Yes, though, I'd say, companies are taking advantage on them. The same way how devs took advantage on their benefits (it's a constant conflict of interests).

Meta just laid off 8,000 employees recently. I'm sure a lot of exceptional people got laid off as well.

True. Can't say if it was because poor soldiers take generals down or because the battle was lost. I mean, the statement does prove neither points.

Critical thinking is an important skill, but I'm afraid it's not something that won't get replaced by AI, let's say in a decade or two.
I'm with ya on the idea behind the statement, still, I believe, you dismiss what it means too easily. For example, I hate big smartphones that don't fit in my hand, yet globally it's a trend, and I will be forced to deal with it. i.e. either I buy the thing I hate, or struggle to find and compromise into something very niche, which will be impaired compared to "normal" alternatives.
What I'm trying to say is "critical thinking won't be needed on the global scale. We're already living in it for many years, and I don't event mean AI here at all.
