crab nebula is like 1000 years old lol
after 3 years it would be 6.5 arcseconds in size (approximately)
that's not very big, but honestly larger than I'd expect it to be after only three years
I do mostly visual astro, and I find star hopping rlly hard. But I feel if I had seen the star previously in my lifetime it would be easier.
Do you not get the Orion Constellation in your night skies?
I do
What does that have to do with it?
The way you worded it just made it seem like you've never seen the Orion Constellation, and colloquially, the star Betelgeuse
Oh I see, but ik exactly where Betelgeuse is, so if it was gone I think I would still be able to see it in my mind and easily find the nebula.
(Just because there is Slowmode)
You said earlier that since Betelgeuse is near the end of its life, it is important for science and stuff. But I feel like a nearby supernova would allow us to learn so much more.
It's such a shattering thought that stars disappear in our lifetime. You're so right
Right? And Betelgeuse is one of my favorite stars in the night sky too, I'd be sad to see it go.
but it would be replaced with a bright nebula
At least it'll shine REAL bright for some days
A reminder of our mortality. Mountains erode and even stars fade away.
*a year
how bright would it be after a year
i think like -3 or so
did anybody find a good astro blackfriday deal?

no
Will Beetlegeuse go super nova the n the year 2054? A super nova happened in 1054 that created the crab nebula.
nobody knows when it could have already happened but the light didnt reach us
I think the super nova already happened and the light yet still is going to reach us.

What do you consider the best focal lenght?

hey, my focal length fits in that range
W
lenticular is jus elliptical with a lower framerate
Ehh, perhaps. But they take on much more interesting shapes than Elliptical galaxies, some can have faint spirals, some are barred, and others can have big swathes of dust around their core
didnt this get asked like a week ago
idk but I didn't check so it didn't happen š
this is no fair š
Im dying for one but so expensive
I just found out that im in b1 and it makes it even less fair

Damn it literally looks like m33
I sure will
dont you have a cam with 1.45um pixel size
1.45um indeed. Im happy with it. I dont want to change it any time soon. The oversampling is not that bad
but you could get way more signal with a cam with bigger pixels (from what I've heard) I really hate slow mode
I can, but i dont want to. Im in b1 and got a 10in f/4 newt. Enough signal for me
And, i dont want to spend any more money...
I can bin, but that will kinda destroy my data. Just downsample in pix
I mean you could go for a uranus c, not that expensive...
I just think that you get wayyy more out of that 10in F/4 Newt & Bortle 1 Sky
someday... i target the smaller galaxies and PN's. A larger FOV wont benefit me. And i dont want a new camera so far. But you are trying to help, and i respect that. Thanks
(Side note: You can always drizzle)
Yeah
Btw: I guess you looked your mag/arc sec² up on light pollution map? I looked it up for me and it says that this brightness is only the brightness of the sky in zenith, hence, doesn't mean that you are in that bortle zone. (I'm in a sure B3 and it tells me that the brightness is 21.87 mag/arc sec²)
From what I can tell off the screenshot, you are probably B3

Maksutov Newtonian, they seem very cool
Ritchey Chretien CDK telescopes. The absolute better-than-best-of-the-best, unbridled top of the line telescopes in the market, period. Unbelievably good optical quality, insanely sharp for imaging and visual. The undisputed kings of amateur available telescopes. The only downside is their enormous price tag, iirc the CDK-1000 (Ritchey Cretien telescope with a 1000mm aperture) costs $500,000.00 to buy, and even then you'd need a whole ass observatory for it and you'd also need to (ideally) live somewhere in a low bortle for maximum quality.
bro 87 votesš
yeah but unless youāre a multi millionaire, youāre never gonna use one
Ah well, they asked for the best telescope type, not the most affordable
imo affordability would be considered when talking about the ābestā
cuz the actual best telescope is on a mountain somewhere or in orbit rn
only 1 refractor vote?!?!??
Find me a good 24" refractor that I can do planetary with for $500, and it'll have my vote.
you empty your bank account to get 2 millimeters of focal length
I love my refractor, but it costed me $400 and is only 72mm.

relatively cheap, thats literally the only reason
where favorite star in Vela
gotta be Suhail
we love suhail
Regor (γ) for me; its the only star I've seen in Vela because Argo-Navis being low in the horizon + doodoo amounts of light pollution = only being able to see its stars from my telescope
While they can be cheap and great value, if you do actually spend a considerable amount of money, similar to a good refractor, youāll actually realize that compared to refractors there are really only two differences (because collimation becomes very easy)
Disadvantages:
newt - only covers up to APS-C sensors
Refractor - either slow or not as high of a resolution (focal length)
Advantages:
newt - can be super fast, up to f/3, or around f/5 if you want to go high focal length and resolution, while still being (relative to high focal length refractors) quite fast
Refractors - up to full frame coverage (or sometimes more)
Itās not that refractors are bad or newts are bad - it depends on your use case, budget and your requirements. If youāre going for focal length and/or speed, no matter the budget, newts or in some cases RCs or Schmitt-Cassegrains are going to be the way. If you want a more widefield image or a setup thatās lighter and more portable - refractors
Should slowdown timer be removed from polls?

i know, i own a newt
SCTs are not the way
Nonono, newts are better than fracs for many reasons. Like the furious banana stated
disagree except for planetary
Isn't aperture key for planetary?
i literally just said āexcept for planetaryā
I just want to find out why.
fracs could cost you a kidney. For the same 6in you pay a few grand, while a newt will cost you a few hundred bucks at max.
Bro, do you have any reading comprehension? a couple messages ago I gave my reasoning for owning a newt: ātheyāre relatively cheapā. I know newts are objectively worse than fracs, and I just expressed that. I also know theyāre the only real option for amateur planetary imaging, so I also stated that.
In general they take more time to get working, because you have to collimate it precisely with consumer tools, flock it, apply various somewhat difficult modifications depending on the model, etc.
You also have star spikes which are an unwanted aberration for a lot of people.
Fine, being curious is not a thing anymore, i can't even ask why
And, i just came here, wanted to ask a question, i am not going to read the entire forum just to ask a simple question
This server has gone downhill
You replied to the message where I said why I own a newt? You had literally all the context.
This server has always been shit.
Itās not a big deal, weāre both just annoyed at each other.
Thank you, now.
Yes, collimation is a big issue with these things, Not very beginner friendly, but im not saying that everyone should get em.
Star spikes, most people like them, the largest issue is the modding side of things, most store sold newtonians need to be completely redone to make them good, just like you stated.
Refractors are not as sharp, and they are very expensive.
Agreed, this server wasn't ever good.
You seem like a chill guy tho
A good frac is sharp (esprit) But yeah most are garbage Iād say.
Skywatcher quattros are a pain, just going to say that for now
Probably true for newts too, only really skywatcher and GSO optics are in contention.
Mirror and Corrector wise theyāre great, you do have to throw out literally everything else though.
Indeed
The Newt of Theseus
I desperately need a 3d printer to mod my quattro, the secondary mirror cell and spider is getting very annoying, i will also need an aperture mask

Please keep the shit posting polling thread on topic! āļø š¤ Also in this conversation we were being entirely "on topic"???, we literally just talked about Newts and Fracs. You don't know what that quote means?
I'm just miffed cuz I think you're being utterly cringe in my view. I had you blocked for being young before, and I think I'll add you back to the blocked list
I just do not understand how a human can care so much about staying on topic in a general purpose polling thread for a discord server.
This aint private messages my guy.
If someone tells you they're no longer interested in discussing something, please respect their wishes, thank you.
I didn't even ping them, they checked back to see if someone said anything. End of discussion.

I think Iāll leave this server anyways, I did so a lot of times in the past, only sticking around cuz of these roles lol.
