Those people are literally breaking even and not making anything. They also need to buy resources to keep their Fleets running which benefits the actual players who are producing the resources. FF was depricated tremendously since launch. Had they killed it outright people who don't want to play would have dumped their ships and they would have tanked even harder than they are now. Crafting system seems to be unprofitable when you have just crew members. Not sure about the case when you have ships to get the resources instead of buying them, but the ships are too expensive. Looks like Star Atlas isn't a play-to-earn game, but rather a pay-to-play game. Just a regular mmo with paid subscription in other words.

Hard reality is that nobody is going to rent that Fleet. It's pretty much worthless in Starbased. Somebody MAY rent a Fleet of 145 XXS as a transport though for like 100 $ATLAS per day.

I've found 350 ATLAS per day fleet (with full fuel and ammo) and I'm going to try it out (for one day, obviously). If mining with such fleet (requires 22 crew members) won't be profitable, than it will be the final confirmation that the game is for the whales only (or just a scam), because like I've said crafting isn't profitable at all (craft results cost less than the money spent on it).
