this is somewhat flawed, but if we make a lot of assumptions/leaps, we can say:

we know that there are around 5.5k undergraduate business students at RBS (courtesy of https://www.business.rutgers.edu/about-rbs/at-a-glance), and I'm going to say around 45k students at Rutgers-NB overall. So, about 12% of students at Rutgers-NB are RBS students.

we also know that rutgers admits around 27k kids, there were 77k applicants this year. I don't have exact numbers, but let's say that 12% of those 27k kids that are accepted are accepted into the RBS school--It's kind of a leap, but for the sake of discussion. That suggests around 3,240 kids are accepted into RBS. Now that would suggest that the acceptance rate would be around 4.2%--not too far from the 3.9% that was said. but that's hard to believe, so I wouldn't take it too much at face value without any officially released statistics to back it.

although im pretty sure those admission numbers (27k and 77k) include camden and newark, so no additional campuses were considered, and newark has around 2.7k students in RBS I didn't account for.

I also think acceptance rates can be kind of misleading

rutgers being put on commonapp allowed many more people to apply, but at the same time, it doesn't mean that all those students who applied were particularly competitive

maybe, like, a third of the additional applications coming in are students who are enough below the average admitted stats threshold that they don't meaningfully increase competition

(granted I won't deny it has gotten harder)

but that seems to be a phenomenon occurring for public schools across the U.S.

additionally, the makeup of students applying to, say, Princeton vs the makeup of students applying to Rutgers will also be different--Princeton is an Ivy, so not as many kids who don't think they may have some sort of a shot at making an Ivy are going to apply, but those same students may apply to Rutgers instead, because that's more on their "level".

so the, like, 4% or whatever acceptance rate princeton has is 4% out of a pool of applicants that are, in general, going to be more competitive than those applying to Rutgers.

(and, these schools both receive less applicants and admit far less applicants than Rutgers)

I think the flaw in this line of reasoning is they only admitted 27k out of 77k applicants. In the last common data set entry for NB, they had 43k applicants with 28k admits. I think we should expect the number of people admitted to go up, and to go up by a lot. Adding the common app means more people will apply to Rutgers from OOS. In-state, many/most kids would apply to Rutgers as a relative safety already. I don't think that number's going to go up substantially with the common app. OOS admits are FAR less likely to enroll. In fall 2023, it was less than 10% of OOS admits actually enrolled. If I have to guess (and this is really a guess), I'd say the admit rate goes to 45-50%, so expect about 35k accepts given the 77k applicants. And of those accepts, I would expect a slight decrease in NJ folks accepted and a slight increase in OOS folks. This would give them more OOS $ while also getting a "good" acceptance rate. Will be curious to see what the reality is considering they haven't even published the common data set from the last admitted class yet.
