oh thats good to hear!
ye im trying to go into data sci
my goal is to first get like an entry data analyst role somewhere
and go up from there
i mean w cs u can major in anything
in this market, its harder to get a cs job if you are not a cs major
it’s hard to get a job even if u are a cs major
my point was that if you aren't a cs major you are going to have a very hard time getting a cs job
a person majoring in cs will have a much higher chance then a person majoring in english
which is why I feel like this statement, at least currently, doesn't really apply
maybe a couple years ago it did
I would say the difference is actually not that much of a difference for future jobs, only your first job
but again you can just complete some cousera certifications
like my dad doesn't have a cs degree but he was able to do some coursera certifications and was able to get a good paying job
this only works if you go to redmond transit center
if you have a 221 bus station for example around your house you have to wait quite a long time to get there
Yeah, this is one of the reasons I am really considering UW.
Btw does UW admit direct to major or pre-major?
do direct admits to the school of engineering have to apply for their intended engineering major at the end of their freshman year or do they just declare it?
ask your uw adivos
advisor
like emauil them cause they should have good info on this
is there a discord for uw 2028 admits
arent' they opening line 2 soon
How hard is the udub chem placement test? By a fair estimate, what class would I get placed in if I've pursued IGCSE level chemistry?
https://www.cs.washington.edu/academics/ugrad/admissions/currentuw
in this website, under faqs this is written:
''What are my chances of admission?
There are always more qualified applicants than space available in our programs. Therefore, our process is competitive, and we must deny admission to some students with good academic records. We typically have space for approximately 25-35% of all students who apply however this number changes depending on increases in funding. It's also important to note that we do not admit differently between Computer Science and Computer Engineering, we consider all applications together and admit without taking specific major into account. The admit rate in 2020 was 28% (113 admitted/402 applied), in 2021 it was 30% (165 admitted/554 applied), in 2022 it was 30% (134 admitted /444 applied) and in 2023 it was 33% (165 admitted /495 applied)''
so theyre saying that theres approximately a 30% acceptance rate for cs transfers from pre majors, but literalyl everyone else is tellign me that transferring into cs is impossible, am i misunderstanding the statistics? can someone explain?
notice that some people apply multiple times (like apply for two years), so it would actually be a higher acceptance rate per person
me too pls lol
also, just realized i missed all the allen school events 😭
is there anything i am missing???
nah they are all optional
they’re all informational
like “here’s all the things we have to offer”
does this count community college to uw transfers or nah
cause theres no way they have this much open space
Anyone have info on waitlist decisions are coming out? I’m asking for a friend
june
oh wait nvm
june’s for honors waitlist
as for the normal one i’ve heard some people get in i think
it would only make sense if they are i’d say
ah okay
just found out Walla Walla is a real location on the map
walla walla waashingtonnnnn
Yeah it is lmao
does anyone have insights on the similarities & differences between hcde, ux design, and informatics majors?
UW Honor's acceptance rate was lower than Harvard's.
hcde is strictly designing lots of different products for people. info is a bit broader and takes more of a tech approach to design
I’m sad
2.5% acceptance rate
And I have to reject
Got into berk and ucla too
And most likely gotta reject
Bro that is so sad
I can’t afford, it’s just the way it goes
chat do you think i can get into uw cs with a 3.83 UW gpa?
i mean yeah
i am instate
but still it ain't happening
i'm curious what the AR for cs was this year
i mean we'll find out in november
id guess probably less than it was last year
more applicants, not enough seats, etc.
yeah that's true
probably less than last year
how much do we think than less year
bro
just believe in urself
and you will succeed
like UW is not an ivy
its a good school
and you have a solid profile and hence have a good chance fo getting in
I know kids with 3.7s who got in
between now and a year from now you’re gonna hit multiple points where you think “it’s impossible for me” and also “wait i think i’ll make it”
like
literally this
but bottom line is if you want to get in and it’s your absolute #1 pick then just make sure you have a killer app
past november 15 its not worth stressing over
yeah i know but i feel like i can't do anything
i feel like it's hopelles
like no matter what i do my rejection is locked in
like my app may be good
but everyone else is better
i felt the same
but trust me you’ll be fine
idk man
you actually have a good app tho that's the thing
i just don't
i just got eagle scout, cy pat, nths, key club, nhs, job, fair job
that's most likely nothing compared to what you accomplished
(trying not to do chance prediction) those are good though
esp eagle scout and cy pat
(also what’s nths?)
national tech honor society
sorry didn't like try to do a chance me
that's not what i was trying to do
ur good
make sure not to accidentally sample bias one way or the ither
if your only exposure to other applications are through a2c, college conf., etc. then you’ll be seeing a ton of exceptional applications because those are the types of audiences that those places tend to gather
think of it like this
not exactly accurate but the green line is what they accept, and the pink line is all you see
if all you see is the top x%, you’ll think that they’ll only accept the top x%
well yeah that's true but only like 600 people are geting in a year and if all i'm seeing for cs is top then the bar is most likely up there
but i could be very wrong aswell
you are most likely right
i'm just trippin
i just really want to get in lmfao
also remember it’s a good school but that’s all it is
it has a lot to offer but it’s not worth centering your life around
yeah that's true aswell
(unless you get in, then you can really do whatever lol)
i mean i'll be pretty bummed if i don't get in but i'm also applying to other schools
yeah for usrte
sure*
like if you get in get all the merch you want lmao
i have a ucla shirt that i’ve legit never worn and will never wear
but anyways
lmao
yeah i won't get that much merch unless i get in can't simp that hard then get rejected
this also applies to any school you’ve been accepted to
yeah that's true
honestly i won't be too angry if i don't get into uw, my top 3 are UW, CU boulder, and purdue
the nice(?) thing about it though is it’s only something you go through once, unless you decide to go to grad school in which case probably more than once
yeah that's fair i only have to put myself through this stres once maybe
i mean i want to get into Cyber Security, so maybe i would want to go to grad but i'll see it's farther down the line
past january 5th just don’t worry about the application process
enjoy life
there’s really a lot more to worry about in life than decisions i promise
yeah that's probably true
cause do colleges really only care about Senior sem 1 grades or smt?
i mean obviously you cna't just flunk out sem 2
some
oh okay
uw didn’t this year, i doubt they will next year
oh really they don't care about sem 2?
i didn't know that
i'm not going to use that as an excuse to do bad i was just wondering
if you do very poorly in some classes they could rescind but that’s not something to worry about now
i wasn't planning on it
(and you’d have to do REALLY bad to get to that point anyways)
this is so real 💀
...yet
yes probably
with average ecs and a bunch of aps
it's going to become a public ivy if it isn't already
Alright chat, where/when do you want to meet up tmrw?
wait why wouldn't i 😭
cause like I would rather do something else on a saturday
also im pretty sure its not required
do we get our husky cards though
ok nvm
?
ok nvm
I forgot I was in the wrong channel
ok but yeah
im not even going to UW next yr
probs not
zoom?
the informational zoom meetings lol
what's your plan?
what major
CS
thats what makes UW so tempting
but also I kinda wanna go out of state
I dont like WA
well, if you're willing to sacrifice, educational quality and job opportunities for location and vibe
then probably not uw lol
I also wanna explore, but I'm pretty happy here lol
bro the campus is not that bad
its just I dont wanna live in the same state for like fucking 22 yrs
worlds longest PhD program
Wdym
im in state though
what I'm saying is you'll be fine anywhere, but I understand where you're coming from lol
that's perfectly acceptable, but you're probably gonna have to be exceptional in somewhere else too
wait why lol
cause I live in WA
A 3.83 is perfectly acceptable I just need to do good in other areas?
so my parents take me to cherry blossoms since I Was liek 6
yes
Mmmm we’ll see
I mean hopefully I get in
My ec’s are like average maybe a little above
And so I guess I’ll just essay max
Admitted students days are so fun
*coming from an intl who gets fomo everytime she sees pictures/reels
I probably won’t be able to go to any student admitted days lmao
Maybe uw if I get on
In*
But every college besides that is like a 12 hour drive away
i trust that i have a chance
i just don
t knowe how high of a chance it really is
yeah we'll find out soon ig
just snuck into admitted student day 😝
CS had a confirmed 8% acceptance rate this year
What 😭
How
Is that in state and out of state?
Or is that instate
@foggy urchin
overall
according to the presentation at admitted students day
why did i just randomly get this email to my personal email??😭 i didn’t even apply to UW with this one
i logged in using my school email (the one i applied with) and i was still waitlist
but i’m confused why that even got sent to that email
overall has always been atrocious
like last year it was technically like 7.8%
if u take like the 600 total admits over like the 8000 applicants it looks bad but its skewed asf
wait bro
where tf did you get that
did they hand it out at the welcome session
That’s a fire plushie
That’s weird af what
ikr!!😭😭
where from
private allen school event during asd
they gave them out to the six admitted students that went to that
damm there were only 6 students that were addmitted that went to that event
i also saw someone walking around with an allen branded water bottle
Where was it
when are fafsas coming back
when are waitlist decisions likely to be out?
i got that shit too
idk how
that’s crazy
when does aid come out
anyone had luck using Zeemee for finding roommates?
Man 😔
im getting no aid gg
is there like a admitted students discord
Also wondering the same thing
does anyone know if honors program scholarships have been released yet?
I think they went out with honors decision emails but they could potentially come out with aid offers
Whenever those come out
i got an email saying i dont qualify for aid because i got a merit scholarship
Could you copy paste it here?
Bc I got a similar email but it was abt fin aid not merit aid
Evaluation of your 2024-25 financial aid application indicated that your FAFSA index number used to determine your eligibility for financial aid meets/exceeds your cost of attendance; therefore, you are not eligible for need-based financial aid.
If you are a U.S. Citizen or Eligible Non-Citizen, you will be considered for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. We will send you an email notification instructing you to view your financial aid offer on your MyUW. Parents of undergraduate dependent students may be able to borrow the Parent Loan (PLUS). Graduate students may be able to borrow the Federal Graduate (GPLUS).
If your parent(s) would like to help pay for your undergraduate education expenses, they can apply to borrow a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan. For more information and to apply for the loan, please direct your parent(s) to the Parent PLUS Loan webpage.
If you are a graduate/professional level student and you want to utilize the Graduate Loan (GPLUS), you may contact OSFA by phone or email.
It is still necessary for you to respond to requests for information regarding citizenship, high school diploma and other documentation. However, you may disregard requests for income or asset information that may have been sent to you. Please refer to the Required Document(s) tab in the MyUW portal for outstanding requests.
If your immigration status is Undocumented or other Ineligible Non-Citizen, unfortunately, you are not eligible for financial aid at this time.
Please contact your campus financial aid office if you and/or parent(s) have questions. Visit their website for current office hours.
Ok ok so this doesn’t have anything abt merit scholarships tho does it?
Bc I got the exact same email
got the same email, but no scholarship
like i have no aid at all
but the subject of the email was Non-need based award
oh yeah it doesn't, idk why i said that i thought i saw something about that mb
yeah
Yup me too
So maybe something else will still come out
I’d assume so
do u think if i didn't get this email but i got a merit scholarship it means theyre gonna give me need based aid?
has anyone else received their finaid yet
also i used my sai in the old cost calculator instead of efc
is sai usually a smaller number than efc
so i'd receive less aid than i think i would
how hard would it be to go frmo pre sciences to electrical and computer engineernig?
i heard its not rlly that hard
just make sure you have a solid gpa and stuff
way easier than if youw anted to get into the allen school
gotchu thanks
yeah good luck
btw the chances of waitlis r pretty high according to the statistics
thank you
last year i believe they accpeted liek 75% of the peple on it
but the year before that they only did 7 out of 4k
plus now theres more apps
bro
the yr before then was covid
and they heavily overenrolled
so this yr is gonna be more simialr to last yr than the yr before
ur chilling
where u live
maryland
i committed to northeastern
bruh
thats so expensive
also if you take more than 3 classes they charge you extra
its cheaper than umd if i dorm
really?
i havent heard that
whrere you going?
idk yet
this isn't a big deal unless you love taking english classes
STEM classes are fewer credits (3-4), so you can take like 4 of them in a quarter and you are fine
idk about northeastern tho, this is for udub
oh i thought he meant northeastern
and you can always just sit in a class
like just ask the prof to audit the class and you won't pay
honestly as long as you aren't dual majoring
it doesn't really matter
18 credits*
Is there any other merit aid stuff that could come out from uw?
It's honestly very limited if you're an out of state student. if you're in a major you can check with your department to see if they offer scholarships, many do
dawg I wasn't even talking about UW
I apologize that I don't take the time to read 150 messages. I'm busy doing more important things sometimes :)
is this about northeastern?
dont respond then?
also its legit 1 message up
You are argumentative and disrespectful, and I don't appreciate how you communicate with me or others on this server.
Common decency gets you places in life. Arrogance doesn't.
I don't need an apology, but please keep in mind the way that you treat others.
ok your the one who came in and tried to correct me
when you didn't even look at the situation
No need to defend yourself. The way you communicate to others will impact every part of your life down the line, for the better or worse.
👍
I've learned over the past three years from experience. You might just be very oddly straightforward online and it can come across more offensively than intended.
👍
this guy is not real 😭😭😭
he very much is
@sharp umbra lmfao the pfp change is nice
But will these scholarships make a significant difference if I need 50k a year?
I mean i dont think so
unless you get like 20 of them
Yeah so that won’t happen
the least you can do is to
Time to withdraw from UW
call the financial aid office
I get 0 aid
no dont do that until you speak
It’s not even worth it
fight for more aid
thats how I got a full ride
to northeastern
Do your parents make 250k a year?
more
but I told tem about my situation
how I rlly want to go out of state
and how much I love the school
How do you get a full ride when your parents make that much money
That’s not possible
Schools like UW, UCLA, Berk are not gonna give me a full ride just bc I want to go
It’s just not gonna happen
ok tbf
I didn't disclose that part
I just said my parents wont pay it
hence I need money
idk if a public school like UW
is gonna be so generous with aid
Yo guys
Do you know if u dub cares about ur final grades a lot if u still get the diploma
Feel free to talk to UW IT if it still isn't working and if you are still able to accept your offer of admission. I'm not up to date on the latest with the admissions so Google is your friend on those matters.
they’ll look at them to make sure you still pass all the required classes you need to graduate/enter
if you’re worried about getting rescinded, its not something you probably need to worry about if its like a B in a few classes or something like that
anyone know when waitlist decisions are out?
they come out on a rolling basis I believe
just like keep checking ur portal
not sure if UW sends you an email
does anyone have experience with the UWild first-year adventures?
im thinking of doing it this summer
what if my intended major is poli sci and im in pre social sciences
and i might drop from a 4/7 to 3/7 in higher level math for my IBs LOL
If you intend to accept UW’s offer of admission I suggest getting in contact with an academic advisor to discuss where you currently stand with credits.
guys is housing open
no
the entire hfs page is broken apparently so
may not open at exactly 12
nvm its 2 apparently
its totally down
where do you find your student id
its open
uw net id something
it's open
who trynna be my roommate
When is waitlist coming out
roommate search in a2c is crazy 💀
may 15th i believe
can someone pls invite me to a uw discord
Ahh ok thanks 😭
You think i could risk a rescinding because of a C in my art class
My major is not related to it at all
is it required for graduation
if not then you’ll probably be fine, rescinding isn’t that common anyways
vhy do you have a c in art 😭
im pretty bad at drawing so my teacher gives me 60s and 70s on assignments
what 😭😭😭😭😭
i only signed up because i didnt do the VPA requirement for UCs
that's so unfair
yeah its quite frustrating but ive accepted it
what about other people in your class
they're all pretty good at drawing
i havent seen their grades but i assume theyre doing fine
is this ap art
I’ve heard even if you fail a class all UW will do is send a letter that says “hey man don’t do that shit here”. You may be asked to explain yourself (although I assume that’s in severe cases) As long as it’s not a high school graduation requirement you should be fine
wait is a visual/performing art an admission requirement
i already did the first semester of this class and passed it
If you’re talking abt UW it’s not an admission requirement @vapid vessel
what if i drop the class? will the W get me rescinded?
Im not sure but to me dropping a class raises more suspicion than a failure
University of California at Seattle
frr
what?
aside from washington residents i think californians make up a signficant amount of the student population
aight bet i really want my friend to get in
oh lmao
