I literally am taking graduate math classes at my state university(with highest grades possible in everything), I had LORs from teaches where they said I was “the brightest student they had in X years of teaching”(they had showed me them after submitting them). My research advisor compares me to a late year undergraduate or beginning graduate student at the state school in his LOR. A university professor said I was the best student in a class with all other senior and graduate students. I had research in crystallography I presented at an international research conference with researchers from EuXFEL and LCLS(my work is actually now used at LCLS within beamtimes). I was programming team lead of my FRC robotics team, president of math club(with 80 members). I also received the equivalent of a bachelors degree in my musical instrument and have performed at well known establishments(but it is more common in another country, so no competitions).

Idk. I think my activities of the common app section + one of my essays may have accidentally come across as a little pretentious which is hugely problematic as they admit people orders of magnitude more qualified/accomplished than me. Also, I don’t have any National-international competitions(like olympiads).

Maybe the fact I submitted the research portfolio late(they said they couldn’t consider it), was also a big factor as research was my largest EC(but they did get my research advisor recommendation).

Or, perhaps, partially because they received 7 LORs for me.

Nice, I tested out of multivar in HS and then at caltech too lol, so will never take an official multivar class. Took lin alg and diff eq in 10th, abstract alg in 11th, complex analysis and number theory in 12th

Yes, they have basically all the top olympiad kids. They take a lot of pride in having people who did well in these competitions and make it a point of emphasis for the school, which was a little bothersome since these competitions are inconsequential after high school

i think the olympiads are nice but ultimately they just serve as an award thing for the majority of these kids to pick up and look good to colleges for

some are pretty passionate but majority aren't ab doing it just for the passion or fun

plus.. a lot of kids aren't even able to do the olympiad if their school does not offer it X__X

Unfortunately this is sometimes true even at the highest levels. At that point it often becomes a matter of pride, which is unfortunate because people often don't even want to learn things that won't help them in competitions. I know because I was like that in middle school, and it almost felt like my natural curiosity was being drained from me in retrospect.

Nope, the math majors have been awesome. They just all seem like genuinely curious people who learn for the sake of it (often because they cannot control their curiosity lol, they need to learn new things)

Being a HS Junior and studying “Graduate level math” guarentees you not only a spot on the IMO team but easily a Silver medal if not a Gold in any country aside from China. Why even care about Caltech? Thats MIT guarantee lol

What also confuses me is that crystollography deals with chemistry and maybe physics…. How many pages was the research? And what was the research topic and main results that you’ve found? if you dont mind sharing. Just curious.

From an admissions perspective. Because of the difference in rigour of so called “graduate courses”, then only way to standarize for admissions is sadly to look at your competition profile. AP, IB or other college level courses aren’t really exceptional since a lot of people get very high grades.
