#UIUC!!! (2022-2023)
30566 messages · Page 31 of 31 (latest)
I’m officially committed to uiuc!
Congrats!
How about a C
Yep
!! yaay!
basically any PCH
rough dorm tier list off the top of my head:
- ISR, newer IKE/6-pack ones (these are all renovated/rebuilt)
- PAR (has single-use bathrooms)
- FAR (communal bathrooms)
- Lincoln/Allen, Busey/Evans (i believe these dont have AC)
- PCH lol
im sure theres plenty of talk on reddit abt it
wait what does 6pack mean
Iken
ohhh all of them there?
im kinda confused bc when i visited they showed me snyder but is that in ike??
cuz it seemed kinda old
yeah just that region is referred to Ike or six pack
they're gradually replacing the dorms, snyder is one of the old ones left
is anyone here picking UIUC CS or CS+X above GT CS?
Par is underrated
Also Snyder isn’t like
Bad
I picked GT CS over UIUC CS+Math last year. Ik a bunch of ppl who turned down UIUC CS/CS+X to come here. But there are prob ppl at UIUC CS who turned down GT CS as well. They are very similar academically for CS, just go with whichever one u like more or whatever is cheaper. Don't get caught up in what random ppl on discord are picking.
thanks, how has your GT experience been so far? what do you like/wish GT had? how's the internship scene at GT this year?
imo GT is more industry focused while UIUC is more academia focused
are you suggesting that UIUC is better for graduate studies (MS/PhD) while GT is better for undergraduate education (BS)?
not necessarily. I think UIUC is better if you want to go for research publication or PhD at a prestigious institution (I know there was a reddit post showing largest percent of PhD at stanford did undergrad at UIUC; also check csrankings.org which bases a lot on research output), while GT is better if you want a six figure SWE job out of undergrad (hearing that this happens often from GT students, plus Atlanta has a lot of opportunities)
but then if you pick GT you still have great research resources, and likewise if you pick UIUC you can get just as good job offerings
so student life > these considerations
deciding the same thing
i got conditional transfer from gt
and im in state and would get a scholarship that waives tuition from there
but i kinda wanted to leave the south and also gt isnt super great for the linguistics half
also like the vibe of uiuc better
but its just so much more money
do you have cs+linguistics at uiuc?
yes
uiuc is good at cs and engineering but it's ordinary at other majors/x
yeah but gt doesnt have a linguistics major at all
yeah then go uiuc if you really wanna do linguistics
and ive talked with the linguistics professors at georgia tech, they teach some classes but theres not a ton
but if you wanna do cs, then it's either grainger cs or gt cs
theyre pushing for a linguistics major but i dont expect it to happen
hmm yeah if you're looking for cs applications to linguistics, uiuc cs+linguistics is better choice
yeah it would be cs+linguistics, from what ive seen theres not a huge difference between a grainger cs degree and a cs+x degree practically
no uiuc 100% fits better
but i would pay about 64k total for georgia tech
and i would pay about 208k for uiuc
so im deciding if the better fit is worth considerably more debt
thats not correct. cs+x in upper classes (i.e. junior and senior year) will take half classes in x while grainger cs will take advanced cs electives, so there's a difference.
practically as in after graduation
doesnt have much difference in hiring prospects
do you want to work in linguistics or in tech firms in bay area?
trying to avoid bay area
but i would like a job that lets me travel so it would likely be programming for someone
but if you like/study linguistics, wouldn't you wanna do something related to linguistics?
i would yes
id like to do something with computational models of languages, kinda nlp adjacent
something like machine translation
and i would also like the opportunity to do linguistics research
then go with uiuc - they have cs+linguistics
i'm trying to compare uiuc cs vs gt cs..
you did say "uiuc cs or cs+x"
true
but im functionally treating the cs part of the education as identical
since theyre ranked similarly
it's not identical though
cs majors will take lot more cs electives than cs+x
no im saying cs education between gt and uiuc
cs majors will take courses like operating systems which cs+x wont
well the high level course im interested in is the compilers course which cs+ling takes anyway
cool
you can take whatever electives you want in cs + x
yeah i was gonna say that
the course requirements are the same, cs+x just adds more from what i can tell
this is true
the number of upper division CS electives you take in cs+x are much less than what you take in cs - this is because you are spending 50% of junior/senior years in x electives
not necessarily it depends on what you do with free electives
also like
that means i get to skip classes i dont like
so what's the downside
no downside if you really want to study cs+linguistics
many people apply in cs+x because it's very hard to get in cs
cs+x has 25-40% acceptance rate while cs has <10%
there are many people who really want to study cs but they apply to cs+x only because it is much easier to get cs+x
oh ive heard that
no if uiuc didnt already have cs+ling i would have double majored cs and ling
or tried to
yeah so you have a genuine interest in linguistics, then it makes sense
but if someone who only wants to study cs, but took admission in cs+x because it's much easier to get in cs+x, they won't get same education as grainger cs
true
go to uiuc for the first year at least
I'd say the opposite
Uiuc CS is less theoretical than GT, more on applied
I mean they still will
You still take all the core CS classes and it's not like you are restricted in terms of choosing CS electives
I know a lot of CS + x majors that finish up the "Grainger CS degree" by taking more CS electives
The amount of CS you learn in CS + x is purely defined by the student who is in the program
You could take +x classes, or you could take more CS classes
But CS + x students usually have extra space so they can take the rest of those electives
For all purposes and intents, you can treat CS + x and CS amount of CS education as the same
Because even if you do take +X classes, there are some that serve as CS electives as well
CS + linguistics takes NLP classes and computational morphology and corpus programming as part of their + X
That's required
CS + stats takes a lot of machine learning and statistical modelling classes in R etc
It can be quite intertwined so you are still learning a ton of CS even if you decide to completely not do any more CS electives
dude if its that much of a difference then gt no question lol
you are paying like 140k for what is really a difference of like 10 classes if you are talking abt cs+x
and then just cs there should be barely any difference
gt weather will probably be a lot better and you are inside a city as well
yeah ik but like
im from atlanta
and not impressed
and have been wanting to leave for years now
and i really am interested in the linguistics part which i dont really feel like gt offers
but idk if thats worth 140k
i am a city enjoyer but atlanta's public transport isnt that good and most areas arent super walkable so it doesnt really have the things i like about cities
and champaign-urbana has a lot of the things i like about cities despite being smaller
i agree that theres not much of a cs difference
but im not treating cs+x as core cs i value the x a lot more than i think a lot of people who just apply to cs+x bc it's easier do
also i want to do study abroad and searching gt study abroad for options open to undergrad cs majors does not yield much i would be interested in
oh i thought GT CS had quite good study abroad program with Oxford university
thats not really the kind i would be interested in though, id like to go somewhere with a different culture and possibly language
whereas uiuc has an approved exchanged program with bogazici university in turkey which seems awesome
or at ntu in singapore
both of which i actually considered applying to
ah ok
actually hold on can cs+x majors participate in the study abroad programs for grainger students
i think ntu is part of the engineering specific study abroad catalog
ok cs+x students arent eligible for the scholarsips for ipeng but i still dont know if they can do it
this is funny to me because gt brags about their study abroad so much but most of it is just their campus in france
yeah i noticed it's their campus in france, but i thought oxford study abroad would be very prestigious
prestige does not matter for study abroad really
you dont get a degree from them and nobody sees the individual classes
id just want to be somewhere i enjoy
Then I do recommend coming here
Yea they are
oh thats sick
yeah, that is an unfortunate impression that many prospectives seem to assume
yeah i think i would too
when applying is it better to do it through the common app or my illini
either works
is one easier than the other?
are you only applying to illinois?
no probably multiple
common app then
Anyone know when do I need to pay after I signed the lease agreement and can I still refund my money if I changed my mind?
I choose IT at last
hmmm I think someone did that last year
but you breaking a lease contract and thats not a really good thing
Guys help me chose between University of Toronto and UIUC for CE
Cost is not an issue
uiuc
UIUC
You eye you see
im gonna go against the grain and say toronto
better city, so depending on exactly what you are looking for you could have a lot more of an enjoyable experience
although if you are ok with being out in the cornfields then uiuc is great
the campus is really nice despite being in the middle of nowhere
uiuc easy
but worse academics by a good margin
I wouldn't say worse academics because they are probably harder than us, but the argument against U Toronto is that it's very hard to graduate in 4 years due to their rigorous curriculum
U Toronto has always been easy to get in, hard to get out
Interesting, personally I would still probably go with Toronto, but it's all up to the person and what one is looking for out of a college experience, that's really why I brought it up, there is a lot more to college than academics, even if academics are a lot of it
But also, I didn't even apply to Toronto cause I didn't apply anywhere outside of the US, so I can't say too much lol
Not much at all, maybe $100ish a month
But you get free housing and a meal plan
Ofc location and school culture are very important
does anyone know what this means
It means they are still processing your appeal
Or if you submitted a term change request
They are processing that
Someone released the computer engineering and electrical engineering acceptance rates if you guys are curious
nonresident decreases it by a lot lol
yea it gets halved
or something
these are just overall
so ima guess non-resident like 20%ish
resident 40% ish
for males
@tender matrix i am once again considering uiuc cuz berkeley is fucked with their new high demand majors. would u say prestige is a huge game changer in finding jobs for engineering?
like i am considering ucsb vs uiuc rn
and how are class sizes at uiuc? ucsb CoE is super small which i like.
I don't think prestige is that big of a deal tbh
Sure it might get your foot in the door
But still comes down to skill
It is definitely gonna be bigger
But we do have some nice engineering support
Why is it so high
¯_(ツ)_/¯
these are the official numbers from the FOIA
I didnt make them up lol
lol same for my major
Probably cause of low number of applications
stat+cs is 25%
its much higher than I thought
but hey acceptance rate != quality of program
the only thing that did match up was grainger cs
with the 2% oos male intl acc rate 💀
tbh the cs+x programs truly are much easier to get in
cs+ling was 60%
cs+astro was 70 I think
pretty sure cs+crop science is even higher
Illinois accepts a lot
good way to get into a top cs program
for any cs students, how tough is the courseload? will i find myself having to dedicate a good chunk of time to succeeding or will i have time to have a social life and have a 50/50 balance?
But also a lot of people drop
oh yea you'll have time to have fun
Doesn’t ECE have like a 50% drop rate
LOL that is true
what do people in ECE transfer into ?
IS?
💀
thats the CS way
if you can't take CS, you transfer to IS
also depends on the classes ur taking
for your first sem if you are taking the traditional recommended path
you;ll have a lot of free time
I think
how is the engineering mechanics major here
Uh idk actually lmak
i just got in through an appeal
Probably mechE
from what I've heard, people in MechE shit on it
💀
💀
I think engineering mechanics is more theoretical
not as many CAD classes I assume
i heard transferring in grainger is not horrible?
okayyy thats good to know also are cs classes rlly competitive??
it depends on the friends you make tbh
some people can be very competitive
others not so much
well yea
if you are in grainger
it shouldn't be too bad to get into MechE
especially since you started out at engineering mech
what about aero
ight thats nice
and keep those grades up
yeah for sure
makes sense
gonna get laughed out the interview room with crop sciences on my resume 💀
💀
Is the ict acceptance rate similar
I think they add first and second major choice so it inflates it quite a bit. also they take a lot in which changes it drastically
can you not transfer into the major you want
no eecs/cs is impossible
basically impossible
stats and ds are hard
berkeley added this new high demand policy this year so unlucky me
oh makes sense
CE I dont think can be put as second major?
How hard is it to transfer into cs for the class of 27 at Berkeley
I don’t really understand the new policy
Basically impossible
There are a list of high demand majors
And cs is one of them
If I am declaring a high demand major I need a backup major that is not high demand
And when declaring high demand I get one chance and they are using some vague holistic review to see if u can declare it
Hmm ok
What abt declaring cs as a double major
Is the hard part getting into the three intro cs classes?
Or is it doing well enough in them to be considered for a transfer
if ur not directly admitted into cs its basically impossible to do anything cs related
yea
one chance to declare cs major but its gonna be super super comp
on that note as a cali rez (money not an issue), can u guys give me some insight on if u would pick ucsb or uiuc ee
also uiuc scholarship + honors
if ucsd admits me off wl, mostly a no brainer then
For what major
ee
they somehow ended up with significantly more applicants in 2022 than the previous years though?
wait was that common app
Yea common app
Why’s that
its in state and they are a top engi program
barely
yes
can you call uiuc and ask them about acceptance rate to a certain major
try it and let us know
their admissions office is def very transparent compared to others, wouldn't be surprised
so once u pay ur acceptance fee, do u need to pay anything else to commit?
nope just make sure you do everything on your check list
sign up for class registration
submit dorm forms
What is the plan for freshman students? I thought the first week starting from 8.21 is orientation week?
8/21 is the start of class
you move in on the 16th
or so
It's pinned
ty
who else can i dm?
I'll send it
Top 3 dorms for cs student that are not too quiet and has decent social life and good food, close to main/engineering quad or a good bus system
?
Anything in 6 pack
Don't need to be close to engineering quad cause you won't have any classes there freshmen year
Same question but for ece 💀
anybody have advice for the meal plans? how do they work and which should I get
anyone else get the housing email?
oh yea I just got it
anyone else get the housing email?
okayyy phew i got scared
which email?
yeah.. i never got one either
10 45 is generally considered good cause you'll get sick of dorm food
its just one to remind u to do housing stuff
well it is more expensive than 12 15 but YES its fairly common to not finish your dining swipes (and those do not rollover). dining dollars do roll over to a limited extent
did anyone get a weird authetication error when trying to do housing?
ah I see, thanks
do you have advice for finding single dorms
gl
when do wl decisions come out
i dont think anyone's gotten it yet but could be wrong
I called the admissions office they said mid June
thats crazy bruh 💀 mid june
i dont know if i should find a roommate or take my chances and see if i can get a single
i really would rather have a roommate i know than a random person
but idk if thats how it actually works so if anybody has advice thatd be nice
I went random and it went horrible for me
so yea find someone you know
room selection happens after picking a roommate right
so i cant pick a roommate and then just choose a single room
only one person has to add u as a roommate for it to link right?
Someone has to send a roommate request and then the other person has to accept it
okay perfect and then you both are added?
I believe so
does anyone know the acceptance rate for OOS Comp e?
and if it is similar to EE or is there a big difference
25% ish
Something like that
EE is like 50%
Has anyone gotten off the waitlist yet?
not yet
yo @tender matrix for uiuc and composite gpa do you have two different transcripts or something
kind of confused on them
Hmm I've never heard of composite gpa
Like major gpa / overall gpa difference?
yeah
how can there be 4 gpas lol
Term GPA—the GPA for your grades for a single semester
Total Institution—the GPA for all courses completed at Illinois
Total Transfer—the GPA for any courses outside of Illinois
Overall—the combined Institution and Transfer GPA
and people put one of those 4 for resumes lol
dyk if uiuc uses overall for scholarships or no
I think overall
Lol 💀
does anyone know how the admissions process works for male and female
like am i competiting only against guys or everyone
Yall trynna cop a new laptop before college whats the recommendations
Thinkpad lol
how do i find my advisor? can i email anyone in the cs department who is an advisor or an i assigned to one?
i have questions about transfer credits
and placement testing
Anyone know the Ambrose Scholarship from college of ACES? It automatically gave me 1500 dollars for each semester
But I can't find any information for this
m2 Mac pro
base specs
Email anyone
me too
is 4 ish hours of Battery life ok on a laptop? idk if I have to get a new one
also is a Remarkable any good for taking notes bc it looks pretty cool
Yea you probably won't have more than 4 hrs of classes in a day
Unless ur a masochist
Do all lecture rooms have socket to charge devices?
@strong fox apologies for the ping but i have a question that can't wait too long
if i sign UIUC's housing contract, i know I can't cancel it after May 15 without paying a hefty fee, like half the room and board charges
but what do i do if i get into one of my waitlists later on? do i have no other choice but to stick to UIUC at this point?
Lemme look into it rq, no worries about the tag
So @slim gorge here’s what I found:
You can cancel if you transfer universities and don’t move in, but you lose out on the $150 fee.
You can also not do priority housing but you obviously won’t get priority, your housing situation may not be ideal. Here’s a link
Damn this server doesn’t have embeds yet
do pdfs usually embed?
never seen them embedded
that embedded for me
that sounds like a gaming laptop lol
would not reccomend one since they are so heavy
get some ultrabook with a gpu and you should be fine with everything
waste
ipad way better
its a gaming laptop yea, not heavy tho and I dont wanna buy another laptop if I dont have to
yeah makes sense. you might want to check what your original battery life was
if its higher than try replacing the battery
will extend your laptops lifespawn by a couple years
I’ll see
Lmao that's what I use 💀
It lasts good enough for me
But yea not exactly ideal at times
You'll need a computer anyway tho
You don't need a pad
It's optional to use a pad
yep
Text
can make habit to bring my charger everywhere but inconvenience will be problematic
mba m1 has served me well for cs and creative work so
not necessarily
some rooms just...arent outlet friendly lmao
yea ik the newer macs are good, just dont wanna spend 1k on a laptop at least not until I really need to
yes
huh
they used to have crazy sales or promos
never thought Apple did decent sales
not sales, but promos
student discount (-$100) + airpods (-$150?)
I do not own airpods 💀
other retailers just plainly slash the price
or do they mean buy airpods w it
but imo if you cant expect to daily drive ur current laptop for the next 4 years this may be sign to stick with one throughout college
free, which arguably is a discount (sell them if u dont want?)
ah fair
yea im thinking to see how i do with my current laptop then maybe by black Friday I can look for deals if I need to
yea
from what I know I think mac would be fine for college
I can always just use my windows laptop in the dorm for fun
oh it looks like there's 2020 m1s for $799 on amazon
is 13" too small or is it a good size
depends what you expect
ive worked on diff screen sizes and they always feel...the same LOL
go to a best buy and get used to using it
alr lol thanks
isn't 13" small for coding? sp. if you're using IDEs?
its fine
what IDEs do you all use?
Vscode
I just bought a 15 inch to be safe

Anyone here waitlisted and heard anything back from them ;-; I was rejected from Grainger but they said I can still get accepted into the shcool
no waitlists have released iirc, just saying tho, grainger waitlist acceptance is quite rare
almost 0 for CS
What about cs+stats
Pretty much almost 0
All the CS programs barely have waitlist movement
I don't know a single person that got off the CS wait-list for any CS or CS + x program
Damn
cs and cs+x are in demand majors
yea
are u kidding me all the math 257 classes are full????
why tf are there only three sections
how tf are freshmen supposed to register then
hmmm
uh
tbh they were full before any freshmen registered I thnk
they might open an extra section
dont worry about it tho
cause you can take it sem 2
Thats what im saying lmao new student registration hasnt even started yet
Actually so depraved
yea hmm
what classes are you taking sem 1?
or plan to take
cs 124, some chp class, was planning to take 257
How many other classes should i do
I need to take education classes i think
257 is the only one left for me
Yeah idt so either
alternatively... you could do 415
It says Restriction(s):
Not intended for First Time Freshman students.
so i dont wanna kill my gpa
lol
actually heard advisors can override this
heres an idea
tell them you can't register for 257
and then go for 415
415 isnt harder than 257
just no comp aspect
im taking it next sem
Oh nice nice
wait howd u get to transfer credits?
i have calc 3 credit but idk how to get credit for it
I did math241 thru nethmath uiuc it automatically transfers
wait but like do u need to email anyone to get it approved?
Talk to your advisor
They have transfer credit forms you need to fill out
Did you get credit thru community college?
If so, use transferology website to figure out if it transfers into UIUC, since they don't accept all CC classes
yup i used that and it shows it transfers
i did and they said to just send my transcript but im confused cuz i already did that but how do i sign up for the right classes then?
They basically will assume you transfered it in
And you can register for the next set of classes
For a CS major I think that means you do lin alg or stats for cs
I in FAR
Not bad
WL movement?
