Great question! Here's what I want to know.

1. Obviously, when will maintenance be completed?
2. Actual estimation of completion time. No IT team I've ever seen would schedule maintenance and have zero idea of actual completion.
3. Why has it been delayed so long?
4. What changes can be expected for the users and our experience?

These are not unfair questions, and if the moderators of the server are unable to answer them, then
5. Who can answer the above questions, and why aren't they already chiming in?

It's just maintenance as far as they've told us - I would assume nothing is changing and they're just restructuring to make room for something down the line. I doubt they'll be fundamentally adding or changing anything that we'll be able to notice with this update.

@modern spruce Ehhhh, I get the sentiment here - But I doubt it's going to mean anything to 99.9% of us here, let alone be worth interrupting whoever's working on the maintenance to explain server architecture to the mod team so they can pass on the message.

1 & 2 - Obviously it seems like they've ran over their estimation quite substantially. They won't want to give another one if it's going to fall through again - So they're likely trying to get things to a point where they can see the end of the tunnel and give us that estimate.
3 - Something has clearly gone wrong in the process of actually doing the maintenance.
4 - Little to none, they'd have told us prior if there were any we'd be able to see directly after this update.
5 - The server maintenance staff might be able to, but they're busy working on the actual servers right now.

When did they share this info? Do you have proof of this info you can share with the rest of the class?

Unless they suspect that any update features may spark backlash, that is. Though I personally suspect that this was a security vulnerability being plugged (which would make reverting to an old version a non-option), while another user suggests that it may be a raid configuration issue combined with a hardware failure (which could potentially wipe data, requiring significant time in recovery and rebuild). But those are just speculations.

Reasonably speaking, if a mere update or feature addition broke things, they'd simply revert to stable in a one to two day extended maintenance and then work on fixing the issues in a separate dev branch. At least, this is what is typically done in this field.

( They have communicated what went wrong, maintenance is taking longer than anticipated. Meaning they either estimated wrong or something went wrong in the process itself. Service outages are also covered in the EULAs that we all agreed to. So there isn't really a leg to stand on in regard to 'defective products' that hasn't already been bound up in legal tape. )

@molten stirrup That's a pretty solid theory tbh. Security issues would be the hardest things to resolve quickly and you wouldn't want to discuss them openly to the public.

It's very rare for a mod to be broken by a patch. An untouched Skyrim SE mod from 2017 will likely work just fine today, despite six years of patches.

The main exception is SKSE, and we've worked with them to expedite an SKSE update. I do recognize there's a bit of a cascade from a game patch to an SKSE patch to patches for SKSE dependent mods. But at least most of this has been streamlined.

If folks can point to other mods broken by a patch I'm happy to look into the situation and see what we can to to mitigate similar issues in the future.

Question for those of you who might know.. I've not been through modding Skyrim post update, how long does it normally take for mods to be updated after? Like, roughly? I know this might be a silly question as we don't even know what the patch does but I'm just trying to prepare here.

It really depends on what needs updating if anything. All of my mods currently released for example will have 0 updates required unless something unintentionally was broken because I rely a lot of vanilla mechanics provided by Bethesda for what I created. SKSE required probably will take a little while longer. Any mod that relies on something that was affected obviously will have a longer wait because one modder is waiting on another.

Depends what's been changed, and how quickly people can react to any SKSE changes. Probably a week or two minimum though because things overran, so it might take into next weekend for some modders to be able to touch anything.

Best bet is to make sure your game is backed up, and Steam can't update you, and see whether people report any problems. (GD 5 minute clock)
I'd expect the patch to be either bug fixes that they've found, stability stuff, or allowing more modern machines to take advantage of more powerful components.

Unless the patch is just to let things work better with the updated mod servers, but has moved some memory locations around.

As for "should have started with that", we'd have still had most of the "it can't take that long" complaints and people pushing for "when will you know when it'll be done??!?"

On PC you can just set Steam to "update on launch" and then since most modded games always launch from skse and not Steam it won't update. That way you can play on your current setup until you're sure skse and all your skse dependent mods have caught up to the patch

Any mods that rely on SKSE would need to update, so if Nolvus uses any mods that need the SKSE, they too will need to update the list

Yep.

In general, any mod which doesn't require SKSE is unaffected by a patch. This covers all content hosted on Bethesda.net, so consoles doesn't have to worry about this. (It even includes most PC mods hosted elsewhere - SKSE does cool things and is used by some very popular mods, but most content doesn't require the expanded functionality it offers.)

There are occasional exceptions where a non-SKSE mod conflicts with the patch, but this is very rare.

As others have noted, mod space is a matter of Xbox HD partitions - not the Bethesda.net servers.

We'd love to increase mod space, but there are substantial technical hurdles to do this well. We haven't given up on the possibility, and check on this regularly to see if there are new options. But currently, it's not something we can feasibly do.

Its very likely they had to spin up a new server if it was running an old OS. That would explain why it took so long. Odd they would need to do that in a production environment though. Usually you would do that in a different environment, test, then replace the server in prod (switch ip info with the old prod server). Im guessing that failed, or an inplace upgrade failed

You should still be able to keep the original running while you rebuild the setup. All I'm saying is I think it has to be something else that happened. To go from 3 hours to 4 days

Which not everyone is okay with some people have mods in their load order that was removed from bethnet years ago so Bethesda keeps trying to find a way to increase kt without wiping.

Yes if the only way to currently increase the size is to make a new partition on the drive for it and that means your mods will have to be redownload. Which is why Bethesda hasn't done it yet.

It's very rare for a mod to be broken by a patch. An untouched Skyrim SE mod from 2017 will likely work just fine today, despite six years of patches.

The main exception is SKSE, and we've worked with them to expedite an SKSE update. I do recognize there's a bit of a cascade from a game patch to an SKSE patch to patches for SKSE dependent mods. But at least most of this has been streamlined.

If folks can point to other mods broken by a patch I'm happy to look into the situation and see what we can to to mitigate similar issues in the future.

gsme version doesnt break anything outskde of dll based skse mods. And even then only if update breaks adlib. If anything else does not work with 'AE' its because of s conflict between the creations and said mod. You can either patch that yourself or remove the creation

SKSE64 will "break", so to speak. Updates do not actually break it. Each xSE version is designed to work with specific version of the game, to avoid memory address conflics. But yes: SKESE, AddresLibrary and mods with hard xSE version check will have to update again.

To clarify a bit what I posted above, if mod depends only on SKSE then it is likely version independent (like SkyUI), so they will work out of the box with any minimum version of game and xSE mentioned.

Most mods that rely on xSE are using AddressLibrary to avoid updates. Some mods still do require hard checks, though the number is few after Address Library came a thing.

xSE launchers is indeed only for PC versions of BGS games. They are Script Extender applications, acting as alternative launchers to inject data in to game. Each game has their own xSE (Skyrim: SKSE, Fallout 4: F4SE etc.) and they depend on version, due to libraries and potential memory address conflicts between game and xSE versions.

Guide: How to permanently stop Skyrim from updating.

It seems many people aren't aware of this method. So I'll be explaining how to permanently stop Skyrim from updating. However it's worth noting that you should only consider using this method if you launch the game via skse64_loader.exe and not through the Steam launcher.

Step 1 - Find your steamapps folder:

Generally on Windows it will be located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps
Or if it's not on your C Drive then check whatever drive you have Steam installed to.

Step 2 - Find the appmanifest_489830.acf file within your steamapps folder:

Inside your steamapps folder you'll see multiple different appmanifest files. The one you're looking for is 489830 which is the app ID for Skyrim.

Step 3 - Make the appmanifest_489830.acf file Read-only:

Right click your appmanifest_489830.acf file and select Properties. Then click the checkbox for Read-only down towards the bottom so that it becomes marked and hit Apply.

Final statements:

Once you've followed all the steps above Steam will be unable to update Skyrim ever again. However, you will be unable to launch Skyrim through the Steam launcher anymore. Since trying to launch it via the Steam launcher will cause it to attempt an update and display an error due to being unable to update.

If you ever want to make it so Steam can update Skyrim again for some reason simply just uncheck the Read-only box mentioned above and hit Apply.

you can backup your existing game files now and move them to a save location, then when the cc servers are back on you can downlad the cc content normally and pull the downladed content out form the gamefiles and copy them in to the backed-up version, after that you can stop auto updates and or disable updates permanently and either delete all files from the original game folder and paste in your backup with the content installed and run the game normally or over skse, or you can run over skse from you backup location.

either way i would recommend to back up the current version of the game, with or without cc content.😉 👍

iMO they redid the modding system to allow modders to sell on their platform which they get the money for and then pay royalties to the mod authors. It'll allow consoles more access to mods but its basically just another way for Bethesda to profit off of a community thats already existed for 10 years. Id be fine with it if Bethesda didn't take a cut and truly was supporting the modding community, but I also don't know what % they do take. I'm wary of it but still optimistic

Only some mods, created by "verified creators". But, if you're worried that your mod load order will suddenly cost 70$, don't worry. Only brand new mods are paid mods, if the mod author chooses so.

Yay. The last time it was mentioned Todd Howard went on air saying that “we don’t want to give more than 5GB because adding a new update will break modding content.” Now the content is heavily broken with “patches” and “new skse needed” but in the end still only 5GB.

I’m sure it will all blow over soon, but it’s still annoying in the short term.

That's hilarious because when they added CC content to Special Edition, it still took mod space. You lose space either way, and the amount you lose by getting AE is negligible compared to the amount of content.

All you have to do is go to the creation club and search for a specific mod, or go on the Bethesda website and bookmark the mod that you want to use.

hmm, I wonder if they could just separate partition CC content. from what I understand that was the issue with increasing mod storage space is that it would wipe old 'reserved space'. If they did make a separate partition that loads first it would be essentially the same, and its not as though it will break a load order given there never was one for CC content

strange, because my layout hasn't changed at all. did the update, when i load the Creations screen it's unable to properly sync and shows the old layout with two "Updates Available" columns, with nothing in them.

Some UI mods don’t break the game. I have two dark souls ui mods and the game worked fine. Since it changes the main menu and the menu music I believe font mod should not break it for you
