If you're going the MO2 route though you usually want to do a fresh reinstall and then download everything through MO2 unless it specifically needs to be set up separately (like Engine Fixes and so on). This isn't a good time to do this if you'd normally get them through Bethesda though, since you can't easily get a list of what you already have.

If you do get a mod manager I also highly recommend looking up a tutorial video series on YouTube. There is an initial learning curve and some essential steps that you don't want to skip which the tutorials usually cover.

The reason why you'd usually want to do a fresh reinstall with MO2 is so that you've got a clean base to work from, and no bits of mods left lying around in the folders.
Like Skyler says, the tutorial videos are a really good idea since there's a fair bit to set up.

Note that you can save yourself some download time on reinstalling if you save the main data files for the game that are usually a few gigabytes in size such as Skyrm.esm.

Technically you can avoid a full reinstall either by the method described above or by removing the extra files yourself if you know for sure what files were added by mods and aren't base game files.

Doing a reinstall is just generally the more user-friendly and worry-free approach.

This is because mod managers like MO2 have their own location where they install mod files to and manage/load them from.

You can technically still install mods manually and still also use a mod manager on top of it, and in some cases for certain mods you might have to, but most of the time you want the mod manager to be the one adding the files so that you can more easily manage the setup using what are known as "profiles" in a mod manager.

It's a lot to take in at first, but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy.

In my opinion, yes, but some do use Vortex, and then when Nexus finishes their third attempt at a mod manager since they're supposedly looking to replace Vortex with a newer one again, probably there'll be that option as well. If I remember right the main options are MO2, Vortex, and then I believe some people use Wyre Bash as a mod manager but I've never used that so I can't vouch for it.

Personally I don't see any appeal in the mod managers they've put out thus far; MO and MO2 already do what they do perfectly, and if I really want to use LOOT it's a standalone tool you can run on your MO load orders as well.

Question .. I know Skyrim gets wonky after 60 frames. If I were to use a mod that enables frame gen, and cap my native frames at 60 while letting frame gen give me more frames, would that still make the game wonky?

Are there any combat mods that will work for Xbox that make parrying and sword combat better?

Something so it's less of just flailing my sword in an enemies general direction and so that I'm not getting punched by a frost troll 30 feet away from me.

Could be they are struggling with how to phrase their update regarding the purpose for the maintenance. I don’t really desire to pump the doom and gloom rumors, but my CFB team is just a absolutely hemorrhaging players to the transfer portal right now, so I’m in that head space. If these paywall associated rumors are true (based off some file leak? - also rumors of a mass reduction of community mods available to console players? - not sure what’s driving that rumor); but if true then they’ll have effectively killed Skyrim on consoles. Anyway, hope it’s just a rumor. It’s hard watching things that bring you joy die.

All that can be inferred with the information we have been told thus-far is it involves the server maintenance they were doing, which could mean any number of things from the server hardware, software, databases, and so on, encountering some sort of problem(s) along the way that require further effort to correct, which throws off the time estimate. Realistically, we likely won't know when it will be done until it's actually done. Which is why it's important for people to simply accept it for what it is and instead try to keep occupied with other things rather than stress out over the extended downtime.

Well, the problem is, if they divulge the specific information, what would any of us even do with it? It's not like we can help. We can't just grab a screwdriver, drive to Maryland somewhere, and start going to work. We're just gamers scattered all over, and realistically we should just, well, play a game, and wait for them to finish their work. It's just not something we need to concern ourselves with.

I understand that. However, I also understand things as a professional who works with and around servers, and have experience both in break/fix and database management. I understand that the process of pushing updates is complicated due to multiple factors, and that unexpected consequences can render a service temporarily unavailable. It has been 4 days. Coms have been bad, and frankly if it is giving them such trouble they should have simply reverted to a known-stable version, as virtually every industry I have worked with and for has been capable of doing. I have my suspicions as to why this is not done, but I don't want to cast stones more than is reasonable. But by still having the sale of the product available without providing a solid timeframe to their customer base, and with the expectation that it should already be available, they are not exactly demonstrating good practices.

I really don't want to argue ToS vs Law vs Professional Conduct, because it's outright stupid and has no basis in what I was even complaining about. But if I must break it down:

Of course, none of us are arguing that them having a server booboo is illegal, or that their Terms of Service allow for it (which is only a legally binding contract so long as every part of it is legally enforceable, which in this case it plainly is not). I'm arguing that they should either temporarily de-list it, place a warning directly on it, or (as a purely professional measure) exercise better communication to set expectations. If you expect a service to be offline for days, tell people it may take until the next week. Or revert to a prior version, should one be available.
