After I graduated, I ended up being a substitute teacher at the high school I had attended. (I was 2 years out of high school.) As an adult, I didn't have any issues going up to the teacher that was extra hard on me and talking to them like an adult. "Jerry (not real name), when I was in your class in 10th grade, why were you so hard on me? It felt like you singled me out and, frankly, picked on me." First, he was surprised I called him by his first name. I reminded him that I'm not a student and we're both faculty.
The reply he told me changed my whole perspective about my school experience - from grade school through graduation.
"Jeff, I was hard on you because I knew you had more you could offer. I know you weren't challenged enough by the curriculum I had for the rest of the class, so I specifically chose to challenge you more - and you rose to the challenge. You set the curve on many of the tests, projects, etc." I look back on that now and, y'know what? I am appreciative of all the teachers that were harder on me than the rest of the class. It instilled in me the idea that NO challenge or task was too tough for me, that if I wasn't doing everything in my power to do it right, it wasn't worth doing.

A friend recently said something that touched on this and hit me right in the chest: You can do great things with passion. You can also do great things out of spite. Either way, do great things.

Sometimes we rise to the challenges facing us because we passionately, fervently WANT to succeed. Sometimes we're told we can't possibly do it, it's beyond us to be "that good". And that's when doing great things out of spite can come in. Sometimes we can achieve greatness - in any task - because we're told we can't and we'll be darned if someone thinks that we can't do it.

Whatever it is, however you succeed (by passion or by spite), do great things.
