I agree with the running animation remarks. Apart from that everything looks really good, love the flying and jumping, going through portals feels good, the sounds are amazing. I also like the witcher senses, it makes sense in such vast environment.

Overworld video is awesome! The capture encounters show her already having some Illuvials to fight with . . . I'm wondering how difficult it will be at the very start before we have captured any Illuvials, and are only fighting with our avatar! Does the whole encounter have to be beaten to capture any of the Illuvials in there? Or do you get to keep the Iluvials that you defeat during the encounter, even if you lose the overall battle?

Great video, I love the design of the world, graphic and all. I‘m really looking forward to explore the regions. Actually one thing that bothers me is, due to the way the encounter with Illuvials work, through that portal thing, the world felt a bit lifeless to me. No Illuvials or other creatures wandering around and populate this beautiful world.

Heat map is a rough indicator of where loot is.

The long term goal is to use a cool screen spaced 2D fluid sim using a plugin we own. I'm still not sure if it's possible but it would be 100x cooler than the version in the game now

Im a few days late on this but Legendary Augments are bid on by the players using mastery points as one of the game phases. It was included in the PVP match structure leak Aaron put out. I dont know how they would work in survival, maybe just a fixed cost to buy the Legendary Augment every 10 rounds or something.

@old sierra I have been sifting through a lot of my youtube comments and theres a major theme that from the gameplay people are concerned the game is boring without any 'threat' and such. I explained in my video that time is a major factor here but I'm inclined to ask your thoughts on this sentiment? Do you have ideas around this or something that we just havent seen yet? Obviously I havent played the overworld so maybe the exploration is super engaging in itself and I just wont know until I try. (I know monster hunter is the vision here)

I think there is a fine line with having threats in the overworld. Players paying money to travel and then they "die" to something in the overworld could be frustrating. Having threats in the overworld could maybe be Whirlwinds, Snowstorms, Avalanches, Pouring rain. Muddy environments that slow movement. I do think adding moving objects such as birds, fireflies, blowing leaves and dandelions could add to the immersion. I know the plants will be animating as well.

Having some kind of monster chase you would be awesome and would make it more tense getting to the illuvial marker on overworld. Maybe if it was a class of animal that wasn't an 'illuvial' so couldn't be captured.

I mean there has to be some inherent risk other than just not capturing the illuvial but at the same time it depends on the gameplay experience they’re going for. There aren’t really threats in Pokémon except for having unexpected encounters. It seems like encounters with illuvials are sought after and are not randomly sprung up on the player so I would think there has to be some element of a threat that isn’t implemented currently, or we just didn’t see it in the gameplay

The issue here isnt paying money, booster packs etc. We are purely discussing game enjoyment. Sure the financial element impacts this but what we have to avoid like the plague is people getting bored with the game. And there are two major ways in gaming to keep something fresh and replayable. Number 1 is multiplayer functionality, which we have in the battler/competitive scene. But that wont be present in the overworld for a while. The second is an action based game where other elements dictate your actions on the fly, which helps keep it fresh. Currently its extremely free, every single open world game in the past decade has had opponents. Even no mans sky and minecraft which are primarily exploration games have a variety of threats. I'm not saying thats the answer but if there is a simple mechanic we can add, we should.

That being said minecraft is a great example of doing sandbox right. Because there is so much to collect and build the creativity element takes hold and makes it a more enjoyable experience. We don't have building but if the collecting has some deeper levels of complexity and randomness that would go a very long way. We havent seen what thats like yet but as long as plants dont appear in the same locations every time and each time you travel it feels somewhat unique for one reason or another that is a fantastic engaging factor

There's more than one way to skin a cat and this team will deliver in all aspects. Because if/when they implement something that doesn't quite hit the mark, we the community actually have a valid voice and will let them know what we think needs to be addressed. = win win for us all eventually.

It’s a fine line. The overworld is like opening cards. If it it hard like Elden Ring then people are going to quit instantly because you pay to go there.

Don’t get me wrong. I love that style of game, but we can’t be that. There are two things:

We have more skeletal meshes than pretty much any game I know. Most games have just humanoids, or a few creatures. We have 200+ creatures with about 15 separate bone structures. Animating that in a dynamic world is very time consuming. It isn’t planned for a while.

People pay to travel. If we make difficult linked to capture it can feel VERY punishing. Would you buy cards if the shop keeper threw them at you and you had to be skilled enough to catch them one by one? Most wouldn’t. So it is a bit easier. You can fall in acid and lose health but your drone will teleport you to the obelisk. You can have to time jumps to reach high places. You can do clever things to span chasms. But it can’t be “you fail you die and lose your money”.

As for the world being empty? It is destroyed. I won’t go in to more but it is definitely more bare than most. That won’t last. And we still have lots of flora (and tiny fauna) to go in.

I love that we going to be adding floras and tiny fauna, but in open world games I end up spending way too much time just running behind cool looking animals that popped up corner of my eyes. and I chased it and end up finding a cool cave to explore or a underwater cave to dive in. Those kept me going back again and again. These creatures maybe wont have to be NFT to capture but maybe more on the resource category.. something to be scavenged along the line with other plant resources and we create potion or something with it.

I think this is a representation when a special Illuvial spawns on the battle board when you encounter them in the overworld (jumping in the singularity to start the battle). My guess for “special Illuvial” would be a “perfect stats” Illuvial. just to add that extra excitement during the battle and capturing phase, knowing you having a chance to capture a “perfect stat” Illuvial.

I don't think that the Illuvial design is all the same or that they look bad. Not at all, the first Axodon design was one of the key reasons I wanted to become part of this community. Just on a scale I feel like Pokemon and some others (I named the ones that have done it the best in my opinion) have made their creature a bit more distinctive.

I honestly think a lot of it comes down to context and style. Illuvium is based in realism which means there's certain rules we have to follow. Pokemon and Yugioh are designed to be animated in 2D, and therefore have to be far simpler and easy to draw quickly/ repeatedly. They're also designed for a much younger audience so simplicity is key. Hearthstone is a far more stylised game so the creatures and characters have a more anthropomorphic style to them which allows a lot more freedom with overly exaggerated shapes.

We've done it already with the Pokemon style illustration we did a while ago, but I'm confident that if you apply the design language/style of any of those other games to the illuvial designs they will hold up very well.

This is all a long way of saying that if you prefer those styles that's totally fine, but I don't think they're a good comparison

The example I would give is the difference between Overwatch early concept art roster vs release roster, same art style but different design philosophy. Unrelated, but does Illuvium only want to appeal to an older demographic? Just asking because I see more games opting to have simplistic/cartoonish art style, probably because older people are more open to play games that are cartoonish then younger people are to play mature games (Fortnite early concept art vs Fortnite when released, Titanfall 2 vs Apex Legends and wherever Battlefield is trying to pivots its game)

Maybe I'm just having a bad day but when I see a comment saying we aren't following some fundamental design philosophy, which is just blatantly wrong, It frustrates me.

If you would like to change our design philosophy to meet your own standards then by all means, write up an IIP and ask us. If that passes and the council agrees with you that the characters are "slightly" too indistinguishable compared to other games then I'll gladly implement your specific changes and we can delay the game 18 months and redesign all the characters to match another game you prefer.

Right now, you are the only person in this entire discord that I'm aware of who is getting confused and I should not have team members feeling like they need to take time from their day to defend comments like yours or incite some fundamental debate when our very own design bible factors everything you have mentioned in.

Sorry if this offends anyone in the community but sometimes you need to understand the effect certain comments can have on a tired team this far into development. Comments can come across as very entitled.

I for one love the design of illuvials. Every leak of a new illuvial gives me an adrenaline rush. Never once have i thought they looked similar or low quality. Even the so called WIP look fantastic. The trailers are just so cool as well. If I've learned one thing from dealing with the public is it is impossible to please everyone. I have seen so much progress from the Illuvium team in just under a year of following the project. Thanks for bringing back excitement for me in gaming and the future 🙌

Sorry, I should have been more considerate towards the team considering the state of things. My intention was not to say that everything is bad or redo everything. Just to see the community sentiment on this subject and have a discussion with someone to see some arguments why my view is mistaken or why I might be right. I was not looking to discuss this with the team, I only responded because they did so. Again sorry if this came of different then I intended. Speedy recovery!

Feel like the community is too fragile to discuss this right now and takes a lot of negative feedback as FUD. Which is understandable when you look at the current market conditions. Also I don't want to draw the teams attention further, what they have achieved in such a short time is mind boggling. It would be weird if there was no stress at all on their part. It was poor timing on my part to bring this up. Probably a better time would be when they start Gen 2 and if the team asks for the community to give feedback on the design.

Unfortunately that's out of our control and the team has to share when final! I don't think every detail is finalised yet either but it stayed pretty true to a lot of the original design but there were some tweaks and changes. As concept art was done and rendered, they shared progress and asked for feedback/input, but honestly it was pretty awesome from the start!
