In my head if it's just slapping down multiple babys then it seems like it'd be hard to pull yourself back if you slip behind in field advantage. But we'll see what's decided!

So to evolve an Illuvial you'd need three that are max level to combine. But in ranked PVP you won't need to have an evolved Illuvial if you don't want. Just by having one of the forms you'll get access to all three.

With your team of five though when it comes to placing them on the board, you'll have a certain amount of points you can assign, and each Illuvial will have a point value, so you can't just put up the biggest and baddest (unless you're in Leviathan Arena) because the points wouldn't allow them. If that makes sense.

I'll try to explain my thought process for these things so that everyone is on the same page.

When you go into the game you will start with the ability to fight from day 0. You won't have to pay for that. You won't get a starter Illuvial like in pokemon because the issue with that is that you could just make many accounts and transfer that starter, fuse it, and have a Stage 3 version in a few minutes (if you are a bot). But there will be some that you can catch for free. They will not be strong, and on our tier system they would be effectively tier 0. In a ranked match those Illuvials are still going to be weaker than others, but also cheaper in cost to play. But the simple fact is that you will have to spend money to be able to play at the top tier of ranked.

There are two options for travel. You can travel for free, and you can travel for a fee. The second way is the only way you can do it to get the non-free Illuvials. So if you just want to explore the world and catch a few free things, you can do it for no cost. But if you want to catch the better things, you will have to pay for the travel and pay for the shard. (Free shards can only capture free Illvuials).

I'm not going to go into the lore behind this because it isn't relevant to the discussion. But the fact is that if we have people able to play for a long time and get valuable things, those things are no longer valuable. In the age of bots there is no work around to this. Instead, you pay for something, you can get something rare and valuable. You don't pay for something, you can still play but you don't get to earn.

The area where this gets grey is the fact that we have 1m tokens set aside for in game yield over 3 years. I don't care how much $ILV costs, that is an INSANELY high prize pool. Most of that will go to competitions, which will require a small investment, because you'll have to have at least one of all the Illuvial lines to be able to strategize perfectly.

So when you go into ranked, you'll be able to earn weekly prizes from doing well. And it could be that you don't just need to win the tournament. There will be options to do things like reward people for improving their rank, etc... We will also have weekly challenges that people can earn from. But any game that gives the majority of it's 'play to earn' element to people who don't pay anything is simply transferring money from paying players to bots. That is the fact of it. Anyone who wants to be able to grind out in Illuvium, spend no money, and then earn a large reward, will be in the wrong game.

However, if you don't have much money that's fine. Create a decent team, maybe have a few different team options. Only capture the Stage 1 versions, etc... Do what you can afford. Then get INSANELY good at the game with your slightly weaker team, and work your way up the ranked ladder. THEN you can earn rewards. I will not stop until I have created a game where someone can do it as their profession. Use your rewards to build a better team and there you go. But there is always going to be the expectation that we will give the most rewards to those that back the project.

Anything that we do where the only cost is time will be exploited by bots. In wow it doesn't matter too much. In a game where there is tangible value for the assets it can be a real problem. Imagine you buy an NFT for $1000 and then the value goes down because a bunch of free players got it. You'd be annoyed at the designers because it was their lack of foresight that cost you. Instead, I want to support two groups really well. I want people spending money to know that there is a high chance that what they buy will appreciate in value, and for gamers I want to build a ranked system that isn't too costly and is fun to play and challenging.

I have some question with this "Travel Fee". Is it a one-time "Pay a fee and unlock this map" or do we have to pay everytime we jump from region to region?

If this is something that everyone feels then the choice is simple. We won't have subscriptions at launch. Saves me a bunch of time and makes sense.

However I still want to think about doing things like "bulk travel" or time based unlocking of a region. That might be a good middle ground.

There will definitely be a 'one time' fee. There might be a 'unlock for a certain amount of time' or 'unlock for X trips' at a discount.

The travel fee is not large though, and it's job is to eliminate bots. Think about it like when you buy pokemon cards you get say 10 cards in a pack. When you go into a region there will be a bunch of encounters to have, and most of them will have multiple illuvials to catch.

What if the barrier to 'unlocking' a new area was based on diversifying you Illuvial collection. Like for example: catch 4 different kinds of Illuvials to unlock the obelisk. This way you force an investment (through purchasing shards to catch unique illuvials) while also diversifying the illuvial collections of all those starting to play.

As for diversifying? Each region generally has creatures of different affinities. What works in one region might not work in another region so you will sort of be forced to diversify.

I can't promise I'm going to make the right call on all the design elements. There are things that I would LOVE to do with the game that i'm constrained on, both because of DeFi issues and time and budget, etc... And then of course the main reason being that I'm just straight up going to make mistakes. But we will try to improve and correct things over time as best we can.

The better we do in the balancer bootstrap, the better the game will be. Remember all the funds from that go into the development (and marketing, but the purpose of that is always to get more people in so the token is more valuable). Remember there are 1m tokens for gameplay yield. If the token his a billionteen dollars each then that's a LOT of prizemoney.

I might as well ask you guys your thoughts on the promo NFTs. What I want to give (in high level detail) is:

1. Promo NFTs (similar to the Cosplay series but a "get in on the ground floor" series. Like first editions.). There will be scaling rarity depending on volume purchased. Buy on all days unlocks a sort of 'i got them all' reward.
2. Tokens redeemable for limited edition (only in the balancer sale) skins.
3. Tokens redeemable for limited edition (only in the balancer sale) emotes.
4. Badges.

The item would be based on the time you purchase, and the rarity / coolness would be based on the money spent.

My thoughts:

We absolutely don't want to give out Illuvials. It goes against our idea of the game starting fresh on launch. We also don't want to give advantage to people who can spend a lot.

I'm open to some additional lottery, but don't like the idea. I feel like if you want a thing, you should be able to buy your tokens and just get the thing. That way nobody fears being unlucky.
