The more I think about this:

If Grant really leaves this project behind without one comment from himself in this Discord, we must assume that he got fired for serious misconduct or has some other very serious personal issues.

I still have a hard time believing what I just wrote, but this is not how you leave a project, even if you are done with your work or art.

The whole announcement reads more like someone was fired than a co-founder voluntarily leaving a project. If later was true, he would have written the announcement and talked to us.

But whatever the reasons are, why are we not told?

I want to give a personal thank you to @little flax .

When I first joined the Illuvium Discord back in June 2019, it was not known (by most) that the mastermind behind all the cool graphics and endless stream of leaks was from Grant. But as he revealed his identity and continued to openly share his work and visions with everyone following the project, we all got to know him a little better. I have certainly seen thousands of rocks, fantastic creatures, jaw dropping graphics and animations, and some of them being created on live streams, while explaining in high details how the process was for creating them. This has been a unique experience, and I have the deepest respect for the level of skill and professional work that Grant has done for Illuvium. I know he has not done it all by himself, there is still an amazing art team behind all of it, but he has been the inspiration and original face to the community from the beginning. This is also why many people are very sad to see him leave.

Lastly, I think many, like myself, have appreciated Grant's personality… always being brutally honest, and striving for perfection to a level that most people couldn't even imagine. combined with high level of integrity and genuine passion has made him a well respected and liked key figure in the original team.

So from myself, there is only gratitude for have being lucky enough to have been on the journey and I wish Grant all the best with his new adventure, I am also sure there is a very good reason why this choice was made, and can only say… rock on, and keep on not accepting any dog shit

It's sad Grant is leaving. Without a doubt, he was the driving force behind us going AAA with the graphics, which I know a lot of people have said has delayed us and “look at Palworld's success with far less”, but I think it's what will define us. I've played Palworld, and it's incredible fun, but it doesn’t give me that same feeling that Pokemon did of wanting to collect and understand everything about the creatures, which was Grant's mission from day one. He's worked ridiculously hard over the past 3.5 years, and the last 12 months has been slowly handing off the reins to Rogier and the other art leads. As Aaron mentioned, we are in good hands with the Art Team and have some super cool stuff to show you that really brings the Overworld to life. I'm sorry for that but unfortunately, without going into details, I'm dealing with a personal tragedy at the moment that has crushed me and those I love most and under the circumstances I agreed to let it be written for me while we cope.

I've seen the response and you all deserve to know what is going on and why so let's dig in, I can't make this quick.

I remember in an AMA being asked what is the thing I'm most proud of in my career.
The answer was and is "The Team"

Helping to build this team is the greatest thing I could ever imagine doing and I devoted every ounce of my soul into ensuring it grew into something special.

I watched a group of artists and developers I helped build outdo my life's best work and felt so truly happy about it that I shared it all with you.

But Through their passion and genius, I was motivated into a grind that would dwarf all prior burn outs.

Ultimately, I ended up unconscious on the floor of my bathroom, spluttering for air.
I had become an alcoholic through masking my wrist pain and I honestly didn't think I'd wake up that night...

My friend found me surrounded with Uber Eats bags and empty bottles of whiskey.

24 hours later, the Illuvium trailer was released.
After that, I promised myself I would never let that happen again and slowly but surely made sure our brilliant team could handle everything without me.
I hired more artists and taught them the things only I was doing and through acknowledging my own weaknesses, I truly believe I succeeded.

While I have still worked incredibly hard these past 2 years, my influence significantly lessened and I have slowly reduced my scope and input.
The team knows this, it was no secret to them but to say things were perfect would be a complete lie.

I always justified my decision by stressing how much I did earlier on but I never expected everyone to agree.
As we got closer to release, there was a very clear strain between Kieran and I, I don't think he believed it was fair what I was doing and you know, maybe he was right.
We are fiercely competitive and there is always so much pressure on us from the community, investors and our own expectations but at the end of the day I was scared shitless of ending back up on that bathroom floor and I stood by my decision.
With open beta imminently looming, arguments were had over this topic, sometimes very heated and unhealthy.

If any of you think running a project this big isn't without its major hurdles, you're joking.

We all agreed that if things weren't to change, it would be better for me to step down and hire in areas that are far more critical during this phase.

Honestly, I hoped that would be after release but illuvium doesn't have infinite time or budget.

This wouldn't be happening if I wasn't sure the Team has this sorted and for those mentioning damn Palworld, go check my recent messages on the topic 😝.

I'm sorry if this still seems like a shock to you, Illuvium has a huge year ahead and at the end of the day, I'm always open to that Netflix series or movie but in terms of the game, my work proudly is done.

Ahh man this was tough to read. But health and family over anything. As for Illuvium, I always appreciated how Illuvium was founded by 3 passionate brothers. All of your passion ran deep and that definitely led you all to stand by your conviction and take the game to the direction you all wanted.

But all company comes to a point where they need the whole company to pull in one single unified direction. And it just feels like illuvium reached there. Any company innovating in a new space needs different varying prospectives and I feel all you brothers bought just that, but the moment your strong conviction becomes a net negative for your relation with family it is definitely time to take a step back and think long and hard. You have done just that and you guys found this is the best way forward.

(For all the people complaining understand that even though we would have wanted all 3 brothers all throughout the way, we do have to respect and understand, this isn't your typical company where co-founder leaves, and its all done. So doesnt matter how strained their relationship becomes before he leaves-- these brothers will literally be sharing the same table in family functions. So let them be human and wish him luck)

As for the game direction, I have always wanted to see OW look more lively than it does now and looks like we are going down the right path. There will be plenty of games this bull run, so the team will have to capitalize the lead they have on them, but im sure they are looking into all of that.

Any change at the highest level is nerve wrecking for the team, so lets be understanding towards that. But I do understand community being nervous around it. But lets give the team time to settle into this new reality and continue pushing on.
