I think both are the same. We don't have any reliable data about that. I play testnet because I like the encounter more and don't like to have encounters full of lynxes or T1s. The spawn weight is different between both. Testnet has only 3 capturable Illuvials but higher tier running around while the normal one has lot's to catch but mostly low tiers

you'll need to farm for consummables anyways, and you get the shards used to make mastershards just by runningn around and shooting rocks. the hardest part for beginners is getting the eth for hyperion - i think there are ways to get more eth for free via siphon (which i don't understand) and if you sell like 1 or 2 illuvials, you'll have plkenty of hyperion to get you going

also, you can use the lower tier shards for like T0/1/2 illuvials

it's all part of the game anyways and for beginners, you'll need to grind for gear as well, so while you're doing that, you can get your beginning stash of shards/conummables/etc. ready for the higher tiers

It's up to you. To get airdrop points you might need to fuse illuvials or capture them. To get points you must complete at least the line.
If you complete all line in the Tier you will get bonus points.
