You did not waste any hours. They both count. In the colored version, we don't have the ghost illuvials so you can choose to capture any illuvial from the other team. But in the grey version, you can find more higher level illuvials roaming around. So the chance to find high tier illuvials should be roughly the same.

I mean it feels pretty rough. I could imagen that it is even harder for new users. I guess it should include a factor for DAU (maybe it has something similar). Without that it will be a ongoing process of increasing/reducing the number of allowed Illuvials for certain odd levels (just guessing here). I was a little surprised to notice that the issue is related to the bonding curve because I thought the increased user activity would decrease the impact of the curve.
Furthermore you already said that the data regarding frustration is important as well and with that you already kinda aknowledged that it could be a little hard in its current form

if this stupid bonding curve nonsense is in effect, capture power isn't really worth it. it does make a difference for master/resplendent, but even 90%'s fail like 90% of the time:P BONDING CURVE IS NONSENSE! REVOLUTION! heh.

Brian's idea is the winner: they can reduce spawn rates, but the capture rates need to stay in effect. otherwise there's no point for having different shards - they all become dust for master shards, which then become the only useful shards

it's complicated. each shard has it's own capture power and there's a relationsip between the capture power of the shard, the "capture threshold" (or whatever it's called) for the Tier/Stage of Illuvial, and any capture power bonus. I've kept pretty detailed %'s for various capture powers, and it doesn't appear exactly liner (i.e., Total Capture Power doesn't seem to equal "Capture Power of Shard" + "Bonus Capture Power"); tho, admittedly, this is all albegra that I haven't done in 35+ years... you need to stack quite a bit of capture power to, e.g., go from 70% w/o bonus to 85% w/bonus for higher tier illuvails and shards.
