Finally after having things go a tad sideways, started on my second go at whittling away at a wand.

I'm so glad I've got some more tools and experience cos it seems to be going better already. 2 and a bit hours of carving it and the rough shape is coming along well. Though I'm going to have one hell of nuissance of a time trying to get those spiral grooves into it come when I have to do them.

I've also got some boiled linseed oil to finish it off come that time

Oh a nice thing from the county show yesterday was getting to talk to a few different wood workers about where they get certain woods from as well as more tools and an invitation to go along to a woodworking club that have a lathe.

certainly making wands on a lathe would be quicker than making it by hand with a knife and files and sandpaper.

though rather different skill wise

I met a guy at the show who made some wands, on a lathe (though much rougher than the finish I aim for with my hand made ones) and it allowed for some stuff to be done a lot easier.

Also took some inspiration from two of his designs that I think I'll try in the future

So I did another 2 and a half hours worth of work on my second wand today. Making them by hand with a knife definitely takes more time, though I don't think it limits what I can do really.

I want to wait to finish this one before I share what it looks like, though I'll say right now the it's a marked improvement over the first one.

For starters I don't have any major scuff marks from bad cuts.

Secondly, I used better techniques in laying out my design and I've not got much left to do to finish said basic design.

Lastly I've now got all the way up to 600 grit sandpaper and some boiled linseed oil, so the finish will be much nicer.

I will admit though that I personally have a thing for spirals so it's got 2 spirals in it, woooooh fancy I know, but well it's gone well so far.

Melt wax and pour it neatly onto a surface. Use the desired stamp of your choice and place it onto the wax at an angle and then flat before leaving it to sit and dry

When it dries, you remove the stamp and grab a marker and color the print you want highlighted

There are several methods to do wax seals, I can send you some videos in dms if you'd like

Whilst it initially looks pretty, that's more difficult for me to read than messy handwriting.

Part of it is the lack of spacing between words hurting legibility. And part of it is the excessive stylisation of the letters themselves.

Goodness knows that part of the reason I'm waiting until I've made a good 5 or 6 wands before looking to open up and make some for commission is that by sharing my work ahead of time it gets my name out there.

I've got some rhododendron wood from a bush that my mum cut down 2 days ago now that I'm thinking I might try making a wand out of as well, who knows.

Apparently rhododendron is very good for whittling so that's nice.

I've just got to debark it and dry it out first.

And I'm too lazy to let it sit in a shed for six months so it's going in the oven on gas mark 1 (lowest heat) to dry it out when I get round to dealing with it.
