A suggestion for this if you want it smoother is to sand/file it down.

So the one on the left has been shape finished and sanded smooth and the one on the right has been sanded to 600 grit sandpaper and then sealed with boiled linseed oil.

I am tempted to wrap the grip with something but I don't really have a material to do so.

I'd love to have a leather wrapped grip for it though.

Not the greatest go at that style of wand pommel but hey ho it works.

I'm going to try something quite out there for my next one which will be made of ash, then I think I want to try making one out of cherry before I flip a coin as to whether I cut a piece of oak or maple. Though I'm leaning towards oak cos I have a set of small wood chisels for engraving, which I want to use to carve oak leaves along the length of the oak wand.

And we all start somewhere. My first wand was kind of naff, it's got loads of little nicks in it where the wood split slightly and cutting from the other direction wasn't able to correct it. But it's a learning experience and your next one will be better because of it.

As long as you're having fun making them, that's all that matters.

Getting a good knife for wood carving that you're comfortable with is key.

Though there is a variety of tools you can use; knives, wood planers, files, sandpaper, potentially if you want a wood burner, carving tools for designs, and wood paint/stains/oils/lacquers.

Raymond Sykes is usually very quiet and indifferent, especially to people and topics that he doesn't have opinions about (tho he always trys to be polite and kind) but he'll talk nonstop about what he's passionate about, whether from excitement or anger. One such interest is everything to do with magical creatures and plants.

As his Dogwood wand suggests he is quite fond of pranks and practical jokes, tho he prefers the kinds of light-hearted pranks that even the one being pranked can get a laugh out it. He saves all his harsher and mean pranks for those that deserve it like the actual bullies, because nothing pisses him off more than bullying. He doesn't care what house or year you're in, if he finds out you're a bully he'll make you regret it til you stop. If someone REALLY pisses him off he'll use his metamorphmagus powers to impersonate them and do whatever he can to get them in trouble.

Raymond is from America, but because he's a Metamorph living with muggles, the American ministry of magic didn't want to deal with having to wipe the neighbors memories everytime his hair accidentally changed color. So they sent him away to Hogwarts instead of Ilvermory to be their problem. As a result he basically lives at Hogwarts even during the summer break.

He has also always been pretty big for his age, leading many people to assume he has to be distantly part giant, tho he has no idea If that's true or not nor does he particularly care.

So I probably bore you all with how much I go on about making wands but here's the next 4 pieces I'll be working on.

On the left is two 11" pieces of pine that I'll be turning into wands for the kids of some family friends.

And on the right is a 13.5" piece of oak and an 11" piece of ash.

Also I've never used UE5, only UE4, would you say it was easier to create such an environment in UE5?

Most of my 3D work is done in Unity because that's what I'm used to and it's easier for me to code (I know blueprints can be powerful, I just find them messy and that they require several steps to do what I can do in a single line in code)

Hello! Thank you very much! To the question of the models it is half, some models I already had from a long time ago extracted from the video games to save time but other models I made and others that I already had I retexturized them again
I've been coming from Unity for years and if it's easy to create some things but others are difficult, instead now I'm studying Unreal and at first it was very difficult for me due to the number of windows and tools it has but little by little I understood its logic and I assure you that it is the most powerful engine there is, there are things that with unity I would never have known how to program, instead with unreal trying and trying to understand its logic it did not take me more than 1 day and a half to get things that with unity I would have it took much longer

I'm glad it's allowed you to make things easier. If it works for you then that's what matters in the end.

For me I've generally found Unity easier to make things with though harder to make things look pretty with (though I'm not an artist so I've never really bothered about that.)

I get what you mean about the amount of pop-out windows in Unreal though, I used to have to use multi-screen setups when I used to use UE4 so that I could see all that I was working on.

Still though best of luck for the future and with the creation of more assets to build more of those wonderful environments.

Do you use the specified types of wood or paint it?

I do my best to use the actual woods and then to finish them I use boiled linseed oil which is a natural wood stain.

Beyond some decorative painting for the boxes I want to make for my wands, I see no real reason to paint a wand and mar the wood when I can just apply an oil and bring out it's best side. (after lots of sanding of course)

Good start, now comes the fun part of sitting there and sanding it for 2 hours as you go up through the different levels of sandpaper to get a nice smooth finish, and point/round off the tip whilst you're at it.

On Wednesday I was diagnosed with the same disease that rendered my right eye useless, in my left eye. I have a lot of distortion, warping and blurriness in that eye which means I’m now struggling to draw. My central vision is being affected so I can’t actually look at what I’m trying to draw.

I noticed a little distortion last Friday and it got worse over the weekend. It’s really bad now and I’m struggling to read without getting really close and trying to interpret what a word could be based on the letters I can see and the words around it

I’m getting treatment for it (steroids and possible injections) but it’s not a cure, it can only be stopped from deteriorating further and will require regular treatment for the rest of my life to keep it halted

So the next two wands that I'm making.
The one on the left with the knife next to it was made in the way I've normally done, just sat there carving it down with the knife.
The one on the right was made by drawing it back and forth over the wood planer.

All in all, not a bad bit of work for two and a half hours.

Plan is to round the pommel on both of them, then spiral the grips in to the pommel.

That's the idea, we'll see if I can execute it.

Last thing to do with these is put a spiral groove into each of them.
I want to put it in the grip because it'd be different.

One will spiral to the left and the other to the right. so that there is some difference between the two.

As I was going to say before the interruption, I didn't know there was a subreddit for it. I'm assuming it's a mix of people making them out of good sticks they've found, and people using a lathe to turn one down from a blank.

I've so far only made one from a good stick and that's the rhododendron one I've made.

As for using a lathe, well that's a lot of money and too expensive for me.

I do need to buy myself a spokeshave though, as my wood planer struggles a bit with some of the angles required for a wand.

Neato. I use wooden dowels that I then cut to length and then shape.

I use an 18mm diameter dowel to start with and then work it down so it's the right thickness to fit in the hand.

I chose 18mm, because the 15mm diameter dowels already felt like the right size and therefore if I cut them down they'd feel too thin.

I am picturing a Hogwarts student... drowning. The hand of a Dementor reaches down to hold the hand... of the drowning student.

Giving the sense as if darkness is reaching down to lift the student to safety.

The ash (bottom one) needs the pommel doing, but now I've got the hang of it, that shouldn't be too difficult. Then I get to have fun trying to draw the rune for ash on it and carve that into it.

The rhododendron just requires more sanding really, then finishing with oil and calling it done.

And one piece of rhododendron sanded to 600 grit, pretty much all it needs now is a wipe down and then finishing with boiled linseed oil.

I do like working with the more natural shapes that come from real branches, but it also awkward in its own way.

"Dark Edition" - I removed the logo and added color corrections.

I wanted to upload the super high detailed version which is "21300x12000" but Discord limits me to 8k and the reddit post was removed because a .png file is "highly dangerous"....
