I don't work retail but I imagine it would be good business and etiquette to apologize to the customer that they were inconvenienced and that the item was overlooked, and if possible bring it to the manager's attention later.

Been in a store before and found a bag of burger buns that were completely coated in mold and were months past their date. We got an employee over and showed it to them and they apologized to us that it was somehow left there, and were even disgusted/amazed that it was overlooked.

I was a supervisor for a place that sold food. In those situations, yeah, an apology is perfectly reasonable to ask.

Those kinds of things are often kept as a lack of checking - but usually imo that'd be the fault of the shift supervisor or the person the previous evening. It's a huge food safety hazard

Regardless of how bad customers are, unfortunately it's a situation where if they have found something expired, that's the place's responsibility
