Defence is basically useless as you already have a high defence late game anyway

So it's best to focus on your damage output and it's also best to focus on one type of damage output for the best results.

The jack of all trades, master of none philosophy applies

Most common options are concentration 3/unforgivable 3 they will give some good damage output.

Herbology 3 will make Chinese chomping cabbages super powerful but you need to invest a lot in Room of Requirement.

Ancient magic focus + damage is another option but I wouldn't recommend

im think crucio, expalliarmus, arresto momentum, flipendo in my 1st slots

With that build you should definitely use unforgivable 3 as it boosts the damage more than concentration

But you can basically kill normal grunt with a combination of basic cast.

Yeah that's the trade off. Unforgivable is more damage (150%) but requires set up.

Concentration is 67% increase but it doesn't need any set up

@near pulsar It depends a lot on your play style.

The ones you should avoid are the ones you won't use. You don't like to restock on consumables? Avoid things linked to potions or plants.
You want to have a high survivability? your best bet is using your talents to curse everyone via crucio, and then regain a lot of health at their death. In that case, going for unforgivable is your best option.
You are happy to roll around, using and abusing invincibility frames? ancient magic focus and ancient magic are very good, with the right talents.
You are a master at keeping your opponents on their toes, keeping them in the air and unable to damage you, grouping them close by before finishing them off with a single devastating spell (either bombarda or diffindo)? buff that one spell, with the corresponding optimal use of other traits.
You use ancient magic throws all the time, keeping expeliarmus solely for the great pleasure of offing goblins with their own weapons? A few traits of control might be beneficial.

All those methods can be devastating in any situation, with their own limitations. I'm not sure how herbology fares in a battle arena, nor control, as they require resources (barils or plants).

The only too often overlooked thing, imo, is how long the invincibility of using ancient magic lasts. I'm pretty sure it is the longest invincibility set, especially for the ancient magic throw, and you can be hit by anything during it and shake it off...

you have 36 points in total, and 48 places to spend them, iirc.

There are quite a few 'useless' talents.

There are almost obligatory talents (like long roll).

But in practice, you shouldn't feel limited by either.

In your case, I would go for cursing people, so the upgraded crucio is definitely a must.

Then, unforgivables give +30% by piece (once again, iirc). it is pretty devastating for any enemy.

But yeah, liking to play '1hp, no save' runs (if you get hit, you restart from when you left Prof. Weasley near the fountain, before your first lessons), ancient magic focus and concentration are quite good. or ancient magic focus and ancient magic, which might even be more powerful. I usually don't care much about my spells because I end up under-using them, so I keep transfiguration (1 spell, two ennemies and a free throw), depulso (purple spell for when needed), confringo (long range fire, useful against inferii or spiders) and expelliarmus (gives a free throw). Managed all four houses with that, switching some depending on availability and combat challenges.

4x unforgivable trait + 2x diffindo
set 1: flippendo, glacio, diffindo, confringo (bursts big enemies)
set 2: accio, levioso, descendo, incendio (bursts multiple smaller enemies including inferi)
set 3: versatile
set 4: room of requirements/pets

alternative: cabbage build

you could also try a sneak build or similar, but those take longer. the 2 builds above are the best that don't use unforgivable curses.

Honestly, if you can just switch between all of them as you fight him, that's probably best. If not, just grab a lot of the reset potions (the blue ones, don't remember what they're called), and put in a yellow, red, and purple spell in your tool wheel to hit Ranrok. The Unforgivables don't seem to work on Ranrok himself, but maybe they work on the orbs. Idk, never tried it.

I only used 1 talent point for a second spell set. I think that was good enough. I could load both of them with combat spells to get through most any battles. And then when I needed I could swap a few out for RoR/Vivarium spells on one line. I think in any future playthroughs I may try to only use one, especially if I'm going plant build.

@cobalt spade I'm currently running around with a non-dark arts build, using Transfiguration, Bombarda, Depulso, and Confringo. My gear is with 3x Bombarda III, 2x Ancient Magic III, and 1x Ancient Magic Focus III

It's not exactly optimal, but I do hit quite hard with bombarda when attacking from Disillusionment, enough to (nearly) one shot most enemies, and my ancient magic attacks are able to one shot the majority of non-boss enemies, whether Disillusioned or not

Of course, I typically try to petrificus totalus as many enemies as possible before the fireworks start, make the fight easier

Everything above this line of text isn't really needed

You then have
Swift which is a extended dodge good for dodging the trolls triple attack but otherwise uneeded
4 slots which give more spell wheels, arguably uneeded but are semi useful if you don't want to swap spells

You can make dodge make your ancient magic meter go higher & you can make airborne enemies make your ancient magic meter go higher
& Your ancient magic can disarm enemies

Everything above this line has its uses arguably, a firm maybe

You can make basic cast reduce cooldowns - this is the only one I'd argue is a need
Besides flipendo things take time to cool down

Core is extremely skipable, a bunch of perks you don't really need that can be spent better elsewhere

Several things I put in the maybe category I would actually put in the uneeded category too but I tried to be generous
A slightly longer dodge isn't really needed in any situation just learn to dodge properly

So for spells the absolute best set isn't given until REALLY late in the game, but this is Crucio (with the mastery) followed by Avada Kedavara (also with the mastery talent unlocked). This can clear people out quick.
However, because of the LONG cooldown Avada Kedavara has, I prefer Accio, Desendo, Glacius, and Incendio (in that order, preferably with Accio and Incendio masteries). If you want to make this long-distance, make it Levioso, Descendo, Glacius, Diffindo. This does a lot of damage!
If you don't quite like the 4 spell combo, try using Glacius, Incendio, or try Leviosoing an enemy next to a cliff, then Depulsoing or Flipendoing them off of the cliff. Expelliarmusing a weapon away from an enemy gives you the opportunity to use an Ancient Magic Throw to throw the weapon back at the enemy. Super useful.
Look at the cards you get for each enemy, and use the tips given in the cards! Flipendo at the exact moment the burrowing spiders start to burrow, Descendo when the larger spiders rear up to slam them down, Levioso for the Dugbogs as they use their tongue, etc.
Small Combat Spoiler:
||If you experiment with certain things, you'll find combat tips that AREN'T given. For example, use flipendo on a troll directly after they slam their club down and the spell with flip the club into the trolls' face. There are quite a few things that you might find.||

And to one of Chandlers questions in his vids, Yes! I'm one who bought a PS5 just for this game and for pre orders too.
I will also say I don't mind the glitches and funky moments this game has because you know what, from my point of view, you peeps at Avalanche have just blown this game out of the park.

Start with the Core Mastery. If you are dying often, start with Wiggenweld Potion Mastery 1. Don't get the second one. It's not worth it. If you aren't dying, don't get it. It's usually a good idea to have a Control, Force and Damage spell in 3 sets. I'd also recommend combining Accio with Incendio because they synergise really well.

And I personally have the Utlity spells on a separate set, so they don't interfere with combat at all.

I guess you technically have 3 sets because of Crucio, so that's fine.

I have them arranged so that the same type of spells are in the same spot throughout all my sets, so I don't get confused.

So this is mine, with the first one being my default basically. For the second one, the transformation spell is sometimes switched out with Arresto Momentum if I need it for a duelling feat or for utility reasons. For the third, Flipendo is what I keep it as because it's more useful for certain environmental things, unlike Descendo which is pretty much only useful for combat.

My fourth set, as you can probably guess, is the one I use in the Room, just so I don't have to swap out all my spells every time I go there.

I find it easier to have all reds on one tab, all the purples on one tab, unforgivables plus expelliarmus on one tab, and the final tab will have lumos, disillusionment, and the last two get swapped out regularly depending on what needs to be used.

This way if you need to break a shield you can switch to a tab and know that EVERYTHING on that tab is the same color to break a shield if it's red or purple, the two swappable one in the final page are almost always two yellows since leviosa and glacius are commonly used around the world to manipulate things.

If you aren't using unforgivable curses you could just make that tab all yellow.

The Gryffindor house quest perfectly encapsulates the eccentricity of the Wizarding World imo, easily my favourite gameplay-wise. Hufflepuff has the best narrative and setting.

Slytherin is okay with some nice lore but Ravenclaw is horrendous and feels like a last minute addition.

All of them are kinda lacking though, similarly to CP77s life paths intros.
