I've been investigating Naraka's server quality for a while now and built a monitoring tool to get actual data instead of just feelings. I want to be clear upfront — I'm not a network engineer or IT professional, just a passionate Naraka player who wanted to understand where the problems are actually coming from and hopefully find some answers. I've spent a significant amount of time and money on hardware just to be able to properly investigate this.
Here's what the symptoms actually look like in game. Hit registration feels completely off. Weapons connect from distances they shouldn't be able to reach. Hitboxes feel shifted or delayed. Focus stance inputs feel like they get dropped or delayed, which constantly costs you priority since whoever enters and holds focus stance first should have it. Movement sometimes feels choppy and unresponsive. And instead of obvious teleports it's more like small corrections or rewinds — enemies snapping back slightly, positions getting corrected. It adds up to a game that feels fundamentally unreliable at a mechanical level.
The server runs at 128Hz internally but doesn't send updates evenly. Instead it sends data in bursts with gaps of around 50ms between them, which brings the effective update rate down to somewhere between 50 and 80Hz depending on the match. I confirmed this directly from my router, not just from my PC, which rules out any local system or software issue. I also traced every hop between my connection and the game server, which rules out my ISP as well. Testing with GearUp showed the same pattern regardless of routing path. The problem originates at the server.
The weird part is that this hits low ping players harder than high ping players. If your ping is 60-80ms your client already has a big enough buffer to absorb those 50ms gaps and everything looks smooth. If your ping is low the gaps are bigger than your entire buffer and you feel every single burst directly as input delay, hit registration issues and movement inconsistencies. So the server's burst behavior is actually invisible to most players while low ping players get punished for having a good connection.
This also explains why players with good connections get accused of lagging by others. When the server sends your position in bursts, players with enough buffer smooth it out. Players with tighter timing see you stuttering and blame your connection. Nobody is wrong about what they're seeing — the server behavior just looks different depending on who's watching.
The servers run on Google Cloud VMs. GCP has a burst credit system where VMs get temporary extra bandwidth that depletes under load. When credits run out the server gets throttled and packets queue up, which creates exactly the burst pattern I'm measuring. NetEase can change VM types and server configurations without any patch or client update — players never see it happen.
Western player numbers have been dropping steadily and NetEase probably knows exactly where this is heading. The game is carried by the CN community and my honest suspicion is that they're letting western servers slowly degrade rather than investing in them, with the long term plan of cutting western infrastructure entirely once it's no longer worth maintaining. Kaputt-sparen basically — running costs down until the thing dies on its own. If that's the direction then the server quality we're seeing now isn't an oversight, it's a managed decline.
I'm still building out the tool and looking for people to run it and submit sessions so we can build a proper dataset across regions and times of day. Even if NetEase doesn't listen, the data gives the community an honest picture to make informed decisions about whether to keep investing time and money into the game.

this was an incredible read, i remember wondering if something was the case when seeing the diference between low-mid and high pings in matches, thank you for the explanations and testing o/
however i think regardless of the player numbers going down its hard to assume theyre waiting for numbers to dwindle to cut off servers as more paid cosmetics and updates are still steadily available, like at the very least we'd see bigger purchases such as extreme hairstyles, completely halt, or at least how i usually see game companies behave when they have a similiar intent.

part of the issue people keep missing is that this probably is not a simple “higher FPS = advantage” situation. A lot of it feels tied to how Naraka handles animation states, cancels, and root motion internally.

Most multiplayer games either:

  • force parts of animations to fully play out,
  • add transitional/blend animations between states,
  • normalize movement distances server-side,
  • or elongate/lock certain sequences so render timing differences between systems do not heavily affect gameplay behavior.

Naraka is much more permissive with direct state transitions. You can go from one animation state directly into another with very little intermediary transition state, and if you understand the timing you can abuse the iFrames and cancel windows pretty heavily.

The reason higher FPS feels stronger is not necessarily because the game itself is literally running “faster.” It is because lower render latency and lower frametime let you interact with those tiny cancel windows and state transitions much more precisely and consistently.

On top of that, movement attacks are tied to animation progression/root motion instead of a hardcoded displacement value. Scale Rush is a good example. The attack distance is influenced by animation advancement rather than “move exactly X distance over Y milliseconds.”

So if the animation/movement system is not fully normalized:

  • 180 FPS can advance and resolve the movement more continuously,
  • while lower FPS can compress, skip, or alter portions of the movement curve.

That is why you can see actual distance differences on certain attacks between FPS ranges.

It's less “FPS affects game speed” and more :

  • animation progression,
  • render timing,
  • root motion,
  • cancels,
  • and gameplay state transitions

are too tightly coupled together.

Normally competitive multiplayer games try very hard to decouple those systems specifically to avoid this kind of behavior.

oh hell yeah, from testing it becomes glaringly obvious, i wouldnt think it makes the game faster, it just makes your options faster by proxy (your character changing from x to y faster means starting y faster, y starting faster means y hitting earlier.. and it snowballs by proxy)

and all of a sudden your grapple combos are much more lenient or consistent when relying on the game's buffer because of it, ure catching people with hold dash lights that have barley regained control over their character, or even havent at all

also the game being heavily cpu limited makes the first workaround in mind (to just lower graphics to mitigate the issue) extremely less effective ; o;

luckily, most modes outside of solos, rely a bit more on positioning and skill use and team synergy than just winning every 1v1, so it doesnt entirely ruin the experience when running into players who are too comfortable with the mechanics at an advantage

CPU limited is of moot though. As there systems are normalized properly, lower-end hardware does not alter combat behavior like this.

You can have people on Fortnite playing on consoles against high-end PCs and you do not see movement distances, animation states, or cancel behavior changing because one player is at 60fps and another is at 240fps.

Lower FPS should mostly impact:

visual smoothness,
responsiveness,
input latency,
consistency of execution by the player.

It should not meaningfully alter:

attack distance,
transition timing,
recovery behavior,
or combo leniency.

The bigger issue is the systems themselves being tied too closely together though fps internally vs animation states.

oh definitely, but so far in my and current, previous and a friend's pc ive commonly found that the game gets cpu limited way before it maxes gpu from 40-50 cards on i3-i5 12-13gen intel cpus,
in my current setup i wouldnt even get a stable 60-70 fps across all situations, highest i could get in low load is around 80-90, all while my rtx 5060 is 35-60% usage. and it isnt exactly a sim game or an rts so while i know its cpu limited, im not quite sure why even is that.
