When you're attacked, the battle is comprised of the attacking march and the defending wall. Both have a specific number of attack defense and hit points based on the number of soldiers available, the tier, and your status percentages. The goal is to have more defense points than the attackers attack points so you only have injured and no killed soldiers. The best way to achieve this is to fill your wall with highest tier soldiers making sure to have enough counter troops so you sustain the least amount of damage possible killing as much as incoming march as you can. You want to have all three main types of soldier on your wall in specific percentages, no vehicles. If you can guess the counter formation of the attacker you will do much better. For general purposes it is best to set your formation as that of the same soldiers as your highest attack percentages

The purpose of the t1s is to fill your wall up with large amount of soldiers that you are not using for attacks so that you can maintain the highest attack capability possible and not lose any of your best soldiers from being attacked. One method will make sure that you don't lose, the other you may lose the battle but you will have a bunch of soldiers attacking at the highest level possible. The t1 method is generally used by very large players because their status percentages are so high that the t1s are incredibly strong anyway. For the vast majority of players, if you don't want to get burned and lose your resources it is best to have the highest number of defense points and sufficient counter troops so that you have the fewest casualties while killing as much of the attackers March as possible

If you back off just a little and let them get into a handful of buildings instead of completely shutting them back to hq they & you can spread out a bit 8nstead of everyone queueing in 1 or 2 buildings... at least that's what I tell our guys when it's a shutout... letting the other team engage some is win win for points and you're still going to win.
