Just a heads-up, I'm probably the smallest small-fry in a reviewer ladder. Companies have got in touch and offered to send me the handhelds, and that's fine by me. But a couple have said in certain circumstances payment can be arranged for a certain viewership being reached. And if that's requested, they get some form of management to decide it.

I chatted to one rep about it, purely because I was amazed.

I'm not paid to write my gaming articles, interviews or reviews. The site doesn't even have ads. This is just a hobby for me.

I’m still setting it up atm, but I’m impressed so far. The large size makes it comfortable to grip, it feels like gripping an Xbox controller, about that much width. It’ll be great for dpad stuff. Trying to use the sticks and L2 R2 at the same time is a stretch with how big it is, but L1 R1 are reasonably comfortable to keep in reach.

It feels nice and premium for an anbernic, I like the softer feel on the dpad

Fan is kind of annoying, it has a whiny pitch even on the Cool setting, I set a custom speed and made it even slower

Fortunately, Gamma said the fan barely ever turns on with GammaOS, so I’ll put that on eventually, and that’ll take care of the fan whine

There's a good amount of software improvements with GammaOS compare to Stock OS but it's optional and it would be free to flash it on your RG477V in February. Take a look at GammaOS Next here!

I read about some problems with OTA fixes are not working anymore, but so far not for the 477V

you lose access to official OTAs but I wouldn't worry too much about it

Anbernic rarely releases OTAs and if they do it's usually only to fix a bug that Gamma likely can fix as well, or extract and integrate it in GammaOS

but unless major issues are discovered it's very likely the rg477v never gets an OTA from Anbernic again

it's not like Retroid or AYN where you get regular OTAs with improvements, with Anbernic oftentimes there are no OTAs at all unless the device really needs a fix

I got the rg476h a couple months ago and it's never received an OTA and I don't think it ever will
