I fiddled with my Odin 3 a bit, the device itself feels great and the sticks are , but it's certainly less ergonomic than the KONKR, definitely the right decision to get a grip

fan running high is really audible, like some x86 handheld blasting, not a fan... pun intended

one unfortunate thing is the screen on my unit, unlike on my Thor I can notice some image retention... it ain't something that disturbs in games, but sliding out the drop down menu and then switching to a dark background, you can make out the tiles for a few seconds if you try

also a lil annoying, they didn't turn it off before packaging it, it was in standby the entire time and woke up at the tap of the power button

tho nothing got warm unlike @runic ferry's KONKR

GameHub has been pretty hit or miss for me so far, a lot of fiddling with settings. Also several games where the controller doesn't work. When it does work, it is pretty cool. Edit: Using the official GameHub, setting direct input to prefer native, and enabling experimental steam controller support fixed my controller issues

If you didn't make any parametre changes and you're not seeing the rolling scan, then it's likely that the shader isn't active.

Also on the brightness, try enabling fast forward - that will turn the shader off and you'll see your brightness go up. If the brightness stays the same, that means the shader isn't actuve.

Is your Odin 3 the first device you've connected to Apollo? If so then it should have the permissions for input granted already. Any subsequent device you need to manually grant permissions in Device Management on Apollo

alright, I've been tinkering with this monster for a few days now, I feel like I'm qualified to give my unsolicited thoughts, wall of text incoming

• Clear blue is drop dead gorgeous. I had my reservations about the solid color front going in, but they knocked it out of the park. It feels like a blend between the classy black glass front and the fun transparent plastic color. Definitely a different vibe that the o.g. Odin 2 blue, but it works. Thumbs up to AYN for taking this gamble, it paid off. If you are an always black kind of person, consider this colorway, it's elegant and subdued enough that it might tickle your fancy.

• Ergo is good? I've seen a lot of takes in this channel, from "the grip is a must" to "they should have made it flat". Maybe it depends on the size/shape of your hands, but for mine the ergo here is excellent; the bumps are roughly RP5 shaped, which is to say less prominent that the o.g. Odin 2; but surprisingly I found it works better for my hands than the og Odin 2. For my taste it hits that sweet spot where it's both nice and compact to carry around, but also pleasant to hold and use.

• Continuing on ergo, one question I had on my mind going in for this device was "Can it replace a dpad top handheld like the rp5 for dpad centric games"? Typically on handhelds with dpad bottom, like the original Odin 2 or the Thor, accessing both the dpad and L1/L2 comfortably is a challenge. Dpad centric games tend to use the triggers, so it's not a big deal breaker, but utimately a dpad top handheld is going to be more comfortable when you do need to use the triggers. For my taste, and for my hands, the Odin 3 solves this; this is the first compact dpad bottom handheld I used where I feel like reaching for both the dpad and L1/L2 is comfortable; in fact, my left index finger rests naturally on the left triggers while my thumb is on the dpad. The way I would put it is that, if the o.g. Odin 2 dpad usage is 50% of the way there, the Odin 3 is 90%; a dpad top handheld would still be marginally more comfortable but the difference would be minimal, you can easily forego your RP5 and use your Odin 3 for everything.

• The face buttons are a surprising standout on this device for me. I assumed they'd be similar to the Thor's, which are, you know, kinda clacky and noisy but alright. But no! these are noticably softer and quieter to press, to the point where they go from alright to great. These are the first face buttons I enjoy using from AYN/Retroid since the original Odin 2 (and I have had lots of devices from these people since then). I am really happy that they finally figured out how to make good face buttons again.

• The new sticks are cool. In feel, they feel closer to me to full sized sticks than to switch sticks, they are something like 70-80% of the way in terms of range and finesse. Firing up my usual F-Zero GX test I immediately noticed that I was able to steer more precisely than with any other Android handheld I tried to date. Thumbs up, these are excellent sticks to allow portability and compactness while also increasing range. I hope we see them in more devices.

• Speakers are excellent, maybe slighly less bassy but with clearer mids than the o.g. Odin 2. Really really good speakers, I'm glad they didn't cheapen out here like other brands cough Retroid cough

• Screen is excellent, but you already knew that from the Thor. Notably I am unable to see any image retention, and I've tried. I don't know if I'm lucky or just not sensitive to see it, because I couldn't see any on my Thor either. That being said they have some neat software remedies for retention now, like a "pixel cleanser" of sorts that activates every time the screen spends longer than 30 seconds on the same static image on screen. (there's a typo here by the way, should be "tap to exit" not "tap to exist", unless the Odin 3 is having some sort of existential crisis).

• I haven't found the driver compatibility issues to be a major deal breaker. In my testing it would only show up very ocassionally on switch/pc gaming and almost never on ps2/gc and below. Don't get me wrong, the issues are real and I hope progress can be made in the upcoming months, but it's not anywhere near the point where I'd rather return to the 8gen2 over it.

• Sweet baby batman, what this chip can do is incredible. There have a been a million youtube videos about this so it's very well documented by now, but seeing it for yourself is still impressive. I've tried 24 pc games in GameHub Lite + GameNative (a mix of indies and heavy hitters); of these, 18 worked basically out of the box with decent settings, 3 ran well but had issues and required tinkering, and 3 booted to a black screen. That's a success rate of 75-85% depending on how you count; and mind you by success I mean good graphical settings and frame rates, not "I managed to get it to run at potato settings and 20 fps". Many even ran well with the fan set to "Quiet" without overheating, which is how I would rather play because dear god that fan. Which leads me to...

• The fan curve desperately needs to be improved. Currently you can set it at "Quiet", which is like 20% fan speed, or "Smart", which feels like 70% fan speed. There's nothing in between that massive gulf, which is a problem because in my testing the majority of the heavy hitting stuff doesn't seem to need much more than "Smart", I think a fan speed of 30-40% would be ideal for most people and a lot less noisy. (I hear fan customization options are planned for an OTA so that's encouraging)

• The official Odin 3 carrying case is too damn big. It's the same problem I have with all carrying cases from Retroid/AYN lately. I get why they do this (increased protection) but I just want something that is comfortable to throw and carry around in a backpack, I don't need military level protection. To put it into context, the official o.g. Odin 2 carrying case is smaller/slimmer than this one, despite the device being bigger.

• The joystick caps are kinda slippery. Minor nitpick, but if you play something where you have to twist the sticks quickly, you can feel the thumbs don't really stay in place. A glossy plastic finish in the interior, like the one used in the sticks of the Steam Deck OLED, would add that missing grippiness here imo.

It's a pity that the Thor overshadowed this one, because I can confidently say that this is the handheld of year for me, and perhaps the best Android handheld ever made. The negatives exist, but are very very minor, and the generational leap that this chip brings to the table is nothing short of groundbreaking. In the same way that the Odin 1 disrupted the scene and raised the bar for everyone else, and in the same way that the Odin 2 would go on to do it again, AYN has once again done it with the Odin 3.

I agree with you on pretty much every aspect here - it replaced my Odin 2 Portal before I even turned it on, and will likely replace my Pocket S2 Pro as my favorite high-end handheld. The Odin 3 is insanely good.

It's my first Android handheld and it's probably unfair to everyone else because the bar has been set really high.

I've been looking for something that would play lightweight stuff and emulators, but was comfy and easier to carry than my Steam Deck. The Odin 3 has an been incredible device for me.

And I've barely put it through it's paces. I have Wii U and Switch games installed, and I've played Unicorn Overlord for a couple hours, but weirdly the system I'm putting the most time into is Dreamcast. The screen is gorgeous.
