Nah, they emulate at about the same resolution (for the most part, can someone at that company just hurry up and implement a “S1DockedMode on S2 Handheld” toggle already?), albeit with the Switch 2 still having less battery life but in turn having way less graphical errors for most games.

Odyssey might be an exception since it got a patch, but afaik most games can't run docked on the S2 while in handheld, whereas the Odin 3 does docked without an issue (as long as compatibility issues allow)

See that one parentheses is the exact thing I care about a lot more, since I’ve been actually still enjoying a good number of S1 games in S2’s handheld mode, and for the games that don’t look good in handheld I just play on docked mode instead (and both of which regardless actively play a lot of those games way better than on S1).

Meanwhile, the whole reason I actively preferred playing Switch games on a modded Switch Lite over stuff like the Odin 2 and shit is directly because most of the games I like actively had downright awful graphical errors, and for the most part they’ve still shown up in stuff like Eden even with how much better some games have gotten.

And this is with the 8 Gen 2 in mind, the 8 Elite has gotten better, but it’s still got a lot more compatibility issues compared to older chipsets.

I get the excitement, but at the current moment, all we’re doing is the exact same “overhyping for something that didn’t actually exist yet” that we did with the RP5’s Linux support announcement in assuming “oh this got the SteamFork and Bazzite devs interested, we’re gonna get Arm-SteamOS!”, and so far all that’s led to is just Rocknix and a semi-functioning Armbrian build, where we’re only now having hope for Arm-SteamOS due to Valve themselves actively making it themselves.

Literally right before Russ’s review where he directly went into the issues currently still ongoing with Switch on 8 Elite, we had people getting overhyped and making claims that “8 Elite is at the same level of compatibility as other chipsets” (which was a bold faced lie based solely on an estimate that still hasn’t been met, not a confirmation).

I feel differently about this because I've seen Eden devs posting their progress in squashing prominent bugs (like light and shadow flickering in TotK, for instance)

I don't think it's be at the near-perfect level of, say, SNES emulation for years yet, but I think the time that it'll take to be good for first-party titles I care about is close enough to have me not bothered about getting an Odin 3 instead of a Switch 2

Like, in the same 1-2 years that Eden could bring compatibility to 8 Elite up to the same level as 8 Gen 2 and such, the Switch 2 could suddenly get an update that “adds a toggle for playing S1 games in docked mode on S2’s handheld mode, the issues with a ton of games looking worse in handheld mode due to lacking an update for the 1080p screen” or devs could actually just start doing S2 updates that add 1080p and 60fps (or even 120fps for some games) support.

Both of these are literally just something that could happen at some point, they’re not what is actually properly happening at the moment.

Presumably so yeah, it's kinda wild! However I did have an earlier CID, and that was also 1x (it was 2 higher than my current Backer #) but I accidentally did a SEB rather SF, so cancelled that and reordered, getting me the 4xx CID

So maybe it's based on that instead? But yeah I think a lot of people made that same mistake, so it wouldn't be TOO shocking to have that many cancellations so early on... Bit I'm looking to finally (saved up money) get an Ayn product, and I'm tossing up between the Odin Portal 2 or the Odin 3. It's not MY recc tho - I got it from someone on here (in the Portal channel maybe?) who said they'd tried a load of them.

It's a bit loose with just the Odin 2 Portal in its grip in there, but the grip also comes with a pouch, and if you line the case with the pouch first, then the Portal in its grip fits perfectly and snug in there

I'm a sucker for an official case and wish AYN would have made one that fits the grip, but they didn't and have said they won't. it might be able to push 4k on some games but I’m not sure there

my personal choice fell into not wanting to buy an expensive handheld running an old chip

but obviously you do get some benefits with the older chip, such as solid software and driver support now instead of needing to wait on software to catch up to the hardware

8 gen 2 has a compatibility edge on more problematic systems, like Switch and sometimes Wii, but 8 elite has the performance edge on anything that’s not as problematic, which is basically all PS2/GCN and below plus PC

I’ve also seen really good things about Wii U performance, which at first shocked me but is also delightful because it means I can play LoZ WWHD and TPHD handheld at solid framerates

8 Elite also has compatibility problems with lower end systems, just look at the reviews

also 8gen2 has more than enough power for PS2 and below, it's literally only PC where an 8 Elite CAN shine - - not necessarily will, due to drivers

But Lapis is right about the power angle... 8 Elite in the Odin 3 is gonna be exciting in 2026 as devs unlock its true potential, whereas the 8Gen2 ain't getting any more powerful

Sure, but there are several other options. Toddtronics did a charity auction, the RH guys are doing a community giveaway, you can gift stuff to friends and family.

There's already a financial incentive to give positive reviews to devices just to get a free unit of the next device. This is an unfortunate aspect of reviews in general because most people cant afford to purchase every device in order to make a review. Sellling a device after giving a review also creates a financial incentive to tell their community that it's a good device and then make a profit off of the people who valued their opinion. This is, in my opinion, worse than getting paid to do a review.

So looking at the sticks, they don't seem that different compared to other handhelds. But I played some Ball x Pit where you're constantly moving both sticks, and they feel SO GOOD! They feel tighter than any handheld stick, i would say very slightly tighter than a PS5 controller, like they have juuust the right amount of tension. I love 'em!

I know most devices have the power to do this but man, PS1 at 5x, but then with downsampling set to "box" so the 3D and 2D stuff doesn't look jarring, PGXP correction, and then standalone DuckStation's CRT-NewPixie [ReShade] shader (as seen in a recent ftn stream!)... It's so incredible to look at
