If you remember the first xx devices ‘out of box’ experience was very poor also. It was saved by garlicOS if you are able to remember that far back. It only took me a bit of tinkering with plumOS and I have it working far better than any of the XX devices. A little bit of effort goes a long way.

I have the wifi dongle now and I’m using the one card setup of plumOS and you can’t download new themes. I think it is looking for a file on the second card to download the files to, might be a bug.

The RG35XX SP seems to be the better deal right now, even if slightly more expensive (depending on the country)

But with better firmware and usb wifi, it could be a good „give away“ device

This device and every device out there can all be described as "for your preference" there is no definitive perfect handheld. But there are handhelds that just scratch that itch well enough for you to buy it

The V90S is just decent enough in build quality, has soft buttons and a smooth hinge that actually stay close without any ratcheting or magnets, no lid sensor but the original so didn't have that either I still loved it. No wifi or Bluetooth or video out but with a device that is meant to be brought outside not having those is more of a minor inconvenience, the internal has the chip facing away from the battery which I kinda like. Finally that cheap price that's near the R36S and G350 range but as a clamshell so that's a plus for me

The models that have been confirmed to work are as follows:

I use to be wifi camp but in the end everything can be easily done without it and then the battery lasts far longer with it off. I leave the wifi for the android devices now because Linux wifi is so spotty, randomly cuts in and out. Really bad for achievements.

Just a little head up, if you are planning to get plumOS up and running go with the 2 card setup. If you use 1 card you won’t be able to download ports, themes and take screenshots. Within the code it must try and direct the downloads to a second card which isn’t there.

Remember if you want to turn on retro achievements, change your hot keys and turn off confirm quit you will need to save your changes to core or game directory. These options won’t save to globally. If you are just rocking a few systems then it won’t take too long to do.

With the exception of start/select, the shoulder buttons are as clicky as the two RGs

AXBY less clicky but more travel. Dpad in my view much more usable than the clicky RG35xx

Yep I have plenty of other devices too, been buying these things for last 5 years. But I do enjoy tinkering and setting things up. I only really play GBA on this so far but I enjoy setting up all the other main systems and I’ve done that with plumOS now, hotkeys are fixed, shaders fixed etc. The standby time is so good on this just like the smart pro, never have to turn the device off. Just close the lid and it will go into standby in one minute, don’t really need the magnet.

You go to settings and change it to screen turn off after 1 minute and after 1 more minute to go into standby mode. So it emulates close lid auto standby. I’ve been using it this was for the last 3 days and I haven’t charged it and I’ve almost beaten Metroid Zero Mission.

plumOS but I’ve made heaps of changes to it as a per core save. The reason for this is a lot of things can’t be changed as a global config change because they get overridden by plumOS once you quit retroarch. It’s a workaround that I’ve put so much time into that I’ve made it perfect so I might not change CFW if one comes out. We will see what the other CFW’s have to offer.

Although it is very experimental, by preparing a unique launcher, it is possible to change and save all retroarch settings, which was not possible with V90S's StockOS (and plumOS).

As you can see, the time to start and end the game is also significantly reduced.

Without wifi the battery lasts longer, I have all the flips and this is my favourite.

I’ve grown out of cheevos, so I just use the dongle to download PM games and get artwork. You can live without wifi. The machine can be set to standby after 1 minute so the lid magnet is also a non issue.

It’s not so good now with all the other option out at the moment but I got it at launch and I used it for years to get achievements. The wifi was one of the most solid I’ve ever had in a Linux device other than the x55. Miyoo and anbernic are so spotty, they drop out all the time which is the worst when you are getting achievements. If you want to get achievements and not miss out on some because the wifi dropped out use an android device, much better more reliable wifi. That’s another reason wifi isn’t necessary these devices IMO.

Usually there's some kind of pivot pole or SOMETHING placed in the center of the dpad, so you can't just click the whole damn thing down. This doesn't have that.

So you can just BOOP the center of the d-pad and click it like a button, which causes the inputs to go crazy. It's not an actual button, but now that I know that exists, I can't unfeel it when using the dpad anymore.

I haven’t heard much about CFW but I think this device will gain popularity once people come to terms in its strengths not is weaknesses. With some thinkering around plumOS is great so for. Just change a few options change your hotkeys and set them to core overrides, if you don’t have too many systems and try to play every game ever on one device it doesn’t take too long.

A similar thing happened to the original TrimUI Smart, everyone pooed on it pointing out all the weaknesses but I that device since launch. I did some tinkering on it and made it the best small HH for 2 years or so. It only took a YouTuber to come out and make another video and actually state the positives of the device to make it rise in popularity, but all this was a little too late because there were other options as I enjoyed it for years and gifted the tons of them to people I know. The same could happen here. Rant over 😂

There are people saying here the battery is going down fast. Have you changed the per system setting to battery saver to the consoles that it can be applied to. Also turning on aggressive battery saver in power management. I’ve changed tons of settings and set new core overrides for all consoles and I’ve had almost no battery loss during standby.

the battery goes fast for me, for example i'm playing castlevania aria of sorrow and in half an hour it went from 55 to 32 on balanced power mode(on powersaver runs around 30-40 fps). i will test o stock when i have time but given that my last full charge cycle only netted me 1680mAh either i have a poor battery or powkiddy cheaped out on yet another component

as if that where the case. i purposefully let the battery drain to 0%, measured the voltage to about 3.61v which is reasonable and then fully charge it while monitoring the capacity. i will do the same for several cycles in the next week.

for a parallel, i charged the 35xxsp yesterday from 7 to 74% and it added around 2010 mAh which translates to 3100mAh, much closer to the rated 3300

That’s what I did I think? It’s was 3 weeks ago now. just do it manually. Just take less than a minute. I set it up with one card first and that was a big mistake because of all the errors that you will encounter along the journey.

Some of these systems don't like certain brands of cards. For the R36S there's actually a wiki entry on known working cards, because it won't work with so many.

IIRC, the TF2 slot on the Miyoo Flip has more issues than the right. At least on the older 0228 firmware.

Sandisk Extreme doesn't work in TF2 on the R36S. So we know its a card that has compatiblity issue with some systems. Wouldn't surprise me at all that Powkiddy is using the same port/chip combo that Gameconsole uses.

I'd say it's worth it if you can get it for around 30 or less. I tried modding the xxsp buttons and the dpad still felt bad. The v90s' dpad might not be the greatest but at least you can swap the rubber membrain (unlike with the xxsp that has the clicky things on the board). I really wished for the rg34xxsp to use normal rubber membraines when it was announced. But nah.... xD.
