Bummer about the V90S not having a headphone jack, Bluetooth, WiFi, or HDMI out but as long as it has a squishy D-pad and squishy buttons like the original V90 (and hopefully gets Knulli) I can live without all those things. Give to me the squish! 🙏

It is weird though how in some ways the V90S is actually a downgrade from the original V90. I can't fathom why they thought it was a good idea to drop the stereo speakers and headphone jack!

i do appreciate something with really good tactile switches and tolerances, like the nintendo sp is really fantastic. a lot better than nintendo's later clicky buttons imo. So i'd be psyched about the 34xxsp, but the switches anbernic chose for the 35xxsp have something like 160g actuation force vs the SP's 100g, and i'm not the slightest bit convinced that they rectified that. I don't know why the reviewers didn't talk about it, they babble endlessly about how loud da buttons are though. a lot of people stopped using their 35xxsp's over it

Guessing this is meant to be a continuation of the V90 in its niche.

Its niche being the cheapest way to get the amount of power it has from a "big" manufacturer". Which the V90 was for years, sitting between the datafrog and stuff like the miyoo mini in price and performance. Which is one hell of an achievement.

Which admittedly the V90S isn't hitting right now, as it's a similar price to the probably superior 35xxsp on AliExpress, at least in the UK. The SP is actually slightly cheaper.
But the SP has halved in price since launch over here. If the V90S drops a bit in price over the next few months, it'll be a great buy for certain people, particularly for gifts.

not using battery as a heatsink is an improvement though. membrane vs tactile switches is also a consideration. A133P is marginally more powerful, though unlike the brick/tsp I don't see the case or anything being used as a heatsink so maybe there will be thermal throttling or something. when this gets cheaper it may get a lot more compelling

I absolutely loathe the a133. Over on the knulli discord there's a lot of discussion on how much of a closed hassle of a platform it is. However, the one thing it's good at is sleep. Having a clamshell sleep quickly when you close the lid might be nice. It loses about 10% a day of battery in sleep mode.

outside of any problem with the hinge piece itself, plastic strength, etc, it seems the biggest problem might be that the design lets the hinges slide further into the case and opening and closing it when that happens will kill it if nothing else does

just about every nintendo devices had one form of hinge issues or another. whether you use it enough or it'll form other issues, or if you sell it or break it or whatever else before it happens is another story, but hinge issues happens for devices with hinges. you might get lucky and not have major hinge issues, but moving parts are moving parts, and you'll always have a risk or chance of having issues no matter who the manufacturer is.

i have 2 ndsl with minor hinge issues, 1 3dsxl with hinge issue, and a 2dsxl with a floppy hinge, even though i rarely use it. it's partly luck of the draw and partly that it's a moving part.

if you drive a car long enough, you're going to have tire issues, brake issues, engine issues, etc. moving parts will always have probability of developing issues over time

So far here's my thoughts

• Good controls, rubber membrane face buttons, much quieter than an Anbernic RG35XXSP. L1/R1 are microswitches, but pretty quiet. L2/R2 are different microswitches and are very clicky. Start/Select/Menu are all microswitches, clickiness similar to an Anbernic.
• Buttons are quite soft, not necessarily in a bad way. Dpad seems responsive and doesn't seem to have a lot of false diagonals. ABXY feel great, overall very reminiscent of a V10.
• Size almost identical to the RG35XXSP, maybe like 2-3% smaller. Weight very similar too, don't have scales but PK feels like 5% lighter maybe.
• Doesn't get too hot while playing intensive games, I guess because the battery isn't a heatsink and the CPU is on the underside of the board, facing towards you while playing.
• With stock OS, a quick power button press puts it into sleep mode, and another quick press puts you back into your game. Longer press brings up the software shutdown menu, rather than forcing off the console.
• The V90S's screen is honestly better than the RG35XXSP screen in my opinion. I don't think it's the same panel. The V90S screen is a lot brighter and more vibrant, things look clearer somehow

Tbf without the hinge sensor, it's just a glorified 3.5" 4:3 handheld, the most common form factor

After a day of use I can say I'm happy with it. I knew what I was getting into with no wifi/bt/hinge sensor, that's all stuff I accepted. But honestly it really hasn't let me down in any other factor. Good controls, better screen than the Anbernic, good heat distribution, stock os completely usable. I think it's a good deal for what it is.

SO I have been testing a bit. This batocera version is better than the one on the h36s (which supposedly is the same as the one in the v20). Here the video mode dosnt have the screen locked at 58hz, this timne it's at 60hz. I have been playing RIdge Racer 2 PSP and it stables at 60fps (skipping bufer effects) . Also the dpad is night and day compared to the xxsp (at least for me). The one on the v90s feels like a real dpad compared to teh xxsp ( I really couldn't stand the xxsp dpad, sorry for the hate xD)

(not saying that the one on the v90s is teh greatest dpad, just better than the clicky ones)

Auto power down option doesn’t work as intended. All options just switch the screen to black like a screen saver. If you want to test yourself these settings are located in device settings.

Not a huge issue the power button just pops it in standby mode which doesn’t drain much battery

It's weird cause in stock OS, in the ES menu there is an option to autoconfigure RA hotkeys but it is disabled (and still resets the hotkey's once you exit RA). At least if you remap thr controller in ES you can set the FN button as thr hotkey enabler.

I have mode set to display off 1m and extended mode set to suspend 1m under power management and this will suspend the console after 2 minutes the console is closed or left. This is the only config I’ve found to work so the suspend will work.

Changed the retroarch config file to change all the hotkeys and I went into a game and they all went back to stock. That was time consuming and I’m not doing that anymore.

Without overanalysing a cheap Chinese made toy that is $60AUD, it’s great. Just needs a good CFW for the tinkerers but if you’re a newcomer and just wants to play games it’s great.

To change the hotkeys if they are after to different config or just want to be able to have a rewind hotkey available. You can change the hotkey settings and save them to a core override. This will save them just for that core so you will have to do it for every core. If you don’t have that many systems on you PK it won’t take that long and you will have the hotkey setup that you are accustomed to.

I've noticed jank devices tend to get "first looks" and "unboxings" and no review when the reviewer knows it's jank.

With this device it's probably just new though.

I’ve set up all the hotkeys and turned off confirm to quit with a heap of other small setting changes and I’m really enjoying this device.

I like that the screen goes off in one minute and then one minute later the machine goes in stand-by mode. This chip the stand-by mode is so much better than the other cheap flip models. I prefer this to the shut down method offer from anbernic stock and muOS. This feels like I’m using an actual GBA SP more than the other SP models I’ve tried so far.

For the sake of convenience, I have placed it in the roms/fix_roms location.
Finally, use od-commander to copy the fix_roms file to the system/service directory.

I feel like a harder dpad membraine would be better. Still preffer it much more than the 35xxsp. Also, I am really enjoying how well it plays ridge racer psp. PlumOS I basivally the same, but with some mire options and it feels a bit more stable. (twice I got some ghost inputs in ES on stock OS)

yeah I had the same thought, the dpad membrane is super light

although it's identical to one from a V10 and several other devices afaik

so you could probably swap it out for a harder one

Yeah, once you mess up once you know the deal. I was able to sawp the xxsp buttons without unplugging it, but more often than not you have to.

I opened mine up to fix my X button. You can do it without removing the screen connection by tilting the motherboard up. The buttons are a new design. Same round size as the RGB30, but the tabs are rotated 90 degrees and shorter in the 90S.

Battery's a bit awkward to get back in, but it's fine

No clips around it, just 4 PH1 screws

It"s not the clicky thing on the board that the sp uses. Tipical rubber membraines, but a bit too soft.

Both of mine don’t work either, I wonder if it’s the software that is stopping it from working properly. One of the dongles I’ve got works in every device I’ve owned so far. Seems unusual.
