#Retroid Pocket Classic

Acting like it doesnāt exist is also very ignorant
My LCDs haven't lived as long as my OLEDs - backlight gave out or the panel just gave up it's ghost.
But the other thing with me is I've always run my panels at 100 nits unless I'm consuming HDR content. I create some stuff, so 100 nits is the best way to author content and I prefer it over 200 nit+ content - easier on the eyes. You really ain't burning out shit if you're running an oled panel at 150 to 200 nits.
If I play my classic enough to give it burn in Iāll see that as a good thing
It's an inherent part of the tech, but in such handhelds batteries usually one of the first to go before the other parts anyway, so I don't think it's worth worrying about.
Batteries are also comparatively easy to replace
Yeah, but of all the things to worry about, don't hang onto an issue that is no longer an issue.
The screen on this device almost definately isn't the worry you should be concerned about. Again, 4, 5 years ago, sure - warranted. But it's a tech that has evolved quite a bit - namely the manufacturers addressed/are addressing the central flaw.
There are no reports of burn-in on this Panel(probably G1392FH101GG). Avoid sunlight and heat is help for long life.
That's the crazy part. It was. And then almost no one out of maybe like the first 2 gens experienced it. And now it's back. Lol
Yeah. As long as they don't use some crazy stupid ass ribbon connector
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying 'Oleds don't burn in' or 'don't worry at all about this screen'. Just that the concerns about OLED blown in, these days, on this panel, are overblown and I'd be more concerned about not overloading the lithium ion battery or a hundred other things before I am worried about using the screen.
Wasn't there a picture of the innards some where? With the battery exposed? It looked pretty well assembled I think.
Honestly the one time I'm most concerned is when I'm scraping art for my entire library. Which I did on my DMG. But I put brightness to low and had 0 issues
Oh on this? I'm sure it's fine. Like people can make their own battery packs as long as it's just the wired and off the shelf connectors. Problem is both Ayn and Ayaneo use ribbons on a bunch of their crap
Pretty sure Retroid uses basic stuff. Or at least they did
I've burned in panels over the years. These days you really have to fuck up. 100% brightness left overnight/on-vacation.
Do you run that DMG on full brightness at all? I do badly want that device but I'll never justify the cost on it - the Classic was a stretch purchase for me.
Almost never. Usually im on the couch. It in the office. Or waiting for an appointment inside
But I guess people who play primarily on park benches might have a time
https://tenor.com/view/castlevania-nintendo-simon-good-morning-gif-18331032
Good Morning Team Classic!!
Yeah, I think it's the same for the Classic, which may push that panel another 50 or 75 nits at full brightness. If it did HDR, yeah, you use the full brightness. ...so without HDR on this thing I can't ever see myself dialing it above 50% brightness in use. I don't use my devices in the sun so I'm not fighting ambient light.
Also, HDR on a mobile OLED panel like this can be quite different from HDR on a TV or Monitor as mobile screens don't typically have ABL [auto-brightness-limiter].
Yeah if you're playing outside in the sun, brightness matters. But you'd have to be playing for hundreds of hours straight at max brightness.
Same here, hence why I usually donāt even use Overlays on OLED screens, I just stick with shaders and leave it at that (and also why I usually donāt go full brightness on OLED panels, instead sticking to around 50% or at most 70%).
Honestly Iām actually surprised youāre getting this and the Flip 2, I thought you had an eye issue with OLED?
I mean other than covering up the damn thing with black bezels, the mini has the same screen; no one has raised any flags on the DMG or mini screen being problematic, right? I haven't heard of any DOA panels - LCD or OLED that's the primary indicator of a bad gig for me, how many devices snuck past QA and were bad out of the gate. If a new device comes with a 1 or 2% of DOAs in the first run, I generally start looking for alternatives given future failure rates.
@floral current PWM sensitive?
Yes
Very
I was told retroids donāt have that issue
So Iāll give them a try
I'd love to hear your thoughts on PWM on these units. I've heard they're a bit better but I thankfully don't notice PWM.
Yeah, would love to hear the result - fingers crossed that it doesn't cause issues for you.
Not sure, I usually just didnāt ask and left that as the one thing I outright refused to ever argue about since I honestly completely get having a legit vision sensitivity that makes certain screens that people think of as āinherently better than IPSā outright painful.
I should get my flip by the end of the week
Thatās kinda my point here. Modern oled tech has surpassed battery life so I can see getting 3+ years out of the panel
I don't see PWM though if I did I'm sure it would be a dealbreaker for me. I don't think OLEDs are better than IPS inherently but I do think they are better.
For me, OLEDs have helped my vision a bit. I run the panels at a brightness level at night that is far lower than the LCD panels I had because the contrast isn't shit, and that's been better on my eyes.
For coding, I have a Samsung Ultra 9 14.3 inch tablet, hook that sucker up to the PC as a 3rd display for my code and stick it within reading distance from my face and I can code far, far longer without eye strain than I ever could on an LCD kit.
I'm hoping I'm the same. If I don't get mine this week, it should come in next week. It should hit the plane before the US deadlines.
Mine is in the states, just waiting for the last mile
What colorway did you get?
I got the ice blue and classic 6 bundle
Oh hey thanks for drummin up the model number on the panel. Interesting!
Sure they're paying a bit less but Alibaba has it at 30 USD per panel for 500 units or more.
What do we think Retroid is paying? I'm going to guess 20 USD or even 15 USD is what they're paying given that Alibaba is going to list it a lot higher than it should be and Retroid is buying it for the mini and now the classic variants. US douchebaggery aside, it's looking like the classic is going to be a hot sell.
Sweet!
I got the snes flip and the retro colorway (though I wanted Teal, and then fucked up in asking for PKM as a replacement).
Yeah, it's got to be the panel.

Nice, pkmn was my 2nd choice but I couldnāt pass up a 6 button
Especially todays spicy pillow batteries
Buying ayn Loki batts off the black market
Yeah though bummer I got stuck with the retro colorway accidently - that's the color I like the least.... But the pics of it are actually a bit better than I thought.
Shit. Down the rabbit hole. I'm trying to figure out the cost of the SD G1 G2 chip.
Any ideas? It can't be more than 40 or 50 USD right? I mean for a 130 USD device? It's got to be 70 or less to manufacture this thing if they want good margins.
I'm pretty sure you can get an s8g2 for 40 or 50 usd now
I'd be surprised if the g1g2 goes for more than 20
(crossposting from RP discord)
For fun: Anyone willing to guess how much this thing is to manufacture?
Here's what I have so far:
Screen
probably this panel: https://chinese.alibaba.com/product-detail/3-92-inch-1080-1240-MIPI-1601021438970.html
I'm guessing RP pays 15 to 25 USD. Putting 20 here.
Battery
Don't know the model here, but Li-Po batteries like this average around 5 USD.
CPU / SD G1G2
This is complete speculation as it's very close vested. But given margins on the unit I'm going to guess 25 to 35 USD here. Putting 30 USD down, which should include other chips (Wifi) and PCBs.
RAM/Storage
128/6GB, ehhh, probably close to 10 USD
Case/Build/fullfillment[box]/Controls
Including QA we'll say 15 USD.
TOTAL: 80 USD
Total guesses/bullshit. What do ya'll think?

I doubt it. They are selling it too cheap if that's the case
I've never been into that deep of manufacturing stuff myself so I'm just guessing - what do you think it would be?
I usually donāt care about integer scaling and I chose CRT shaders among those who donāt require that even if they are a bit computationally heavy. But the low GPU power of the Classic led me figure out how it goes with this screen and integer scaling, so as to broaden shaders possibilities. And it turns out that IMHO, many systems fit very well. I think that I would doā¦
- PS1 / Saturn : 320x240 INTx4 (5 pix overscan crop both sides with 6% horizontal bars)
- Genesis / NeoGeo : 320x224 INTx4 (5 pix overscan crop both sides with 9% horizontal bars)
- SNES / NES : 256x224 INTx5 (4% crop with 4 pix overscan crop each directions)
- GBA : 240x160 INTx5 (2% H and 13% V black bars)
- Gameboy : 160x144 INTx7 (5% H and V black bars)
- NeoGeo Pocket : 160x152 INTx7 (5% H and 1% V black bars)
How do we setup RA for a layout like this ? With a mix of black bars and overscan crop ?
It's the chipsets. So the classic's Wifi is directly on the SD chip, not sure if that is the case with the other RP devices or not.
I'm not sure how good the wifi is for the G1G2 - I hope a reviewer does a few tests to put it through it's paces.
I know nothing, but raw components cost? I'd estimate $50 absolute max, I would guess less. That's just me though
The chip on this is wildly impressive
Though the storage on the classic isn't great. Older standard. Poor wifi could mean it's just not writing fast enough to the internal storage and it's throttling.
....but maybe the 6GB of storage can buffer it a bit? I can't wait to test this thing.
not sure if ive ever used a screen where this happens but i think if you just turn on integer overscale that should be how it works naturally? the way they describe integer overscale is they round up to the next biggest integer scale that works instead of rounding down
It is just a margin of about 30% before other manufacturing overhead and business tax doesn't sound like a healthy business to me. Not to mention if they borrow money there is interest cost.
The Retroid Pocket Classic's six-button layout is somewhat unique in Android-based handhelds, so here is a guide to show you how I have some of the most popular systems configured.

Hell yeah
RA ususally has per system settings you can save. also anyone with a non classic/6 button wont even notice the black bars on many of these.
I have ordered a 6 š But I could change my mind if I was doomed to awful bars everywhere. And I know about per systems/folders/games settings. Iām just asking about how to configure for a particular system with horizontal bars and overscan crop at the same time.
Things are even worse for CPS1/CPS2. Capcom uses an āanamorphicā 384x224 resolution aimed at getting displayed in 4:3. If I want a vertical 5x integer scaling with small black horizontal bars, and a forced 4:3 aspect ratio with an overscan crop on the sides (so non integer scaling horizontally) how do I do that in RA ?
Two trains, Train A and Train B, are heading toward each other on parallel tracks.
Train A leaves Station Alpha heading east at 60 km/h, carrying 240 watermelons.
Train B leaves Station Beta heading west at 90 km/h, carrying 360 watermelons.
The distance between the two stations is 450 km.
Every 30 minutes, a mischievous monkey on each train throws 10 watermelons off the train, which are lost forever.
How long will it take for the two trains to meet?
How many watermelons will each train have left when they meet?
If I can do all that properly and add nice integer-scaled shaders, then I would perhaps choose a 4 buttons with black bezels instead. Otherwise, I would probably fill the screen with combinations of overacanscips and slight streches.
Are we doing this math on a Classic or on a Flip 2?
i just saw the person's question and it reminded me of a math question lmao
NGL my Classic playtime just took a big hit with this Oblivion Remastered announcement.
snes and nes worked like that too. i think if you force aspect ratio to 4:3 and then turn on integer scaling it will integer scale just on the vertical
tho imo once you're losing integer scaling on one axis you might as well just give it up and run an interpolation shader
NES/SNES are 8:7 native so they will look amazing on this screen.
3 hours till the trains meet, train A will have 180 watermelons and B will have 300 watermelons
If my mental math is correct
as long as you dont care about how they looked on a real setup but to me the games look wrong skinny like that
if i get this id probably try to get used to 8:7 but some of the games i played more it really bugs me lol
Holy shit. And it's on GamePass? Fuck. There goes my productivity
Both trains will suffer from OLED burn in sadly š©
Iām not picking it up immediately though I love this style game release. So cool they just dropped it like that.
Though I wish theyād have been a little better about keeping it under wraps, itās been an open secret for ages
50 bucks for oblivion remastered im def not picking it up for a while.
50 bucks aināt bad at all
Iāll try it on gamep ass first
It aināt no $80 Mario kart thatās for sure
Unsure for CRT shaders which may rely on vetrtical integer scaling to avoid ugly stripes.
Id pay 40 for it
Yeah the price seems fine to me, looks like they put a lot of effort into it
Better deal than Mario kart 9
Instead of an old game being resold for 50$, you can buy one of these unique games for half the prices knowing your money goes towards the devs and not corporate shareholders
I have fly knight and dark delusion theyāre both good
I've been all in on Gamepass for a while, service and value is so good I'll be a lifelong customer if it keeps up....
Of course nothing lasts forever, so I'll take ownership any day of the week, but I feel no need to buy it until it goes on a super-fire-sale three orfour years down the road.
Lunacid and Dread Delusion do look legit.
Though Iām not buying this argument tbh
especially on a Chinese ewaste discord š
mortal sin or another crab's treasure are both tempting me too
dread delusion is fun AF
very interesting setting
also just in the elder scrolls universe just use openMW to play morrowind again
āStop right there criminal scum!ā
š
$50 for an old game that has been reworked from the ground up
Itās a remaster mate
hadn't heard about dungeons of blood and dream before
that looks nice
looks like a fantasy dungeon crawl equivalent to cruelty squad
It's borderline a remake, it's using both the creation engine and unreal
which is something I'm into
Fair enough
It's definately hard to distinguish this one from a remake or master. Yeah, the story and level design is the same, but the upgrades, additions (more VO work, sprinting, sound, etc.) put it more on the remake side than anything else IMO.
No mod support supposedly which sucks, hopefully they officially support it post launch.
I never think of that part of it but good point.
IIRC the mechanic is pretty outdated
maybe I want to fund a genocide?
also I have quite a few games multiple times, so $50 for an old game I already have is nothing
They did overview 'updates on mechanics that bring it into 2025' like the sprinting. Downloading from Gamepass now though may not boot it up until tonight. I wasn't a humungous Oblivian fan but I always respected it - I suspect I'd be more into a revisit these days than I was when it was released.
That and I'm a sucker for this sort of overhaul / shadow drop.
'Cause I did play a bit of Oblivian back in the day and while I never completed it, I like to wonder what I'd have thought of the same game but with all the updated wizz-bang-do-dads
I love shadow drops
Thatās great if they have updated the mechanic. I will try it.
Itās on PC gamepass right?
I think this is going to be one of the all time great shadow drops. Last big one was what, Hi-Fi Rush?

Yep! Downloading it now.
Hell yeah
Cool cool cool
Gonna see how my 3070 HTPC handles it at 4K lol
whats on gamepass now?
its out already?
Yes
i will wait for my 5090.....
I still have much MS reward points to redeem for XGP
hmm ill see if i can remote install
Current value of current GPUs aside, it's a helluva card I tell you. Helluva card.
I'm concerned they've managed to take oblivion and make something that will run at like 40 fps on low settings on my ally X lol
for the money, id hope so lmao
40 fps would be pretty sweet to be honest.
but such a price increase over 4090, and not as high an increase. but oh hwell
why pay $50 for a graphical update just to then have to run at low settings so it doesn't look any better than the OG tho
Must be hell for reviewers to scramble on this as other than that one image leak is crazy.
40fps is good enough on handheld if the framerate is stable
It gonna be the first non retro game I play in 2025
I mean it's far more than a graphical update. Good news is you've got Oblivian mods that will get you to wherever on your Rog Ally X - we'll have benchmarks for this game in handheld by the end of the week and the OG Oblivian may hold you over until the price hits an acceptable range.
I have game pass, so I'll pick it up when it gets to be like 10 or 15 bucks during a fire sale 3 or 4 years down the road.
ah i dont think i have my xbox app open on my computer at home. manual install when i get home then
is this oblivion remaster made with unreal engine?
I had to invest in a 4090 when the 40 series came around. Managed to get the FE 5090 at retail and made 250 USD by selling the 4090. So I was paid to upgrade basically. Obviously I was super / crazy lucky to win the 4090 lottery AND 5090 lottery so I don't expect to ever have that sort of deal again.
Yes. It's full UE 5.x which I'm super interested in
means i can play it in vr
already got buyers lined up for my 4090
what a shitty market. 2yr used 4090 for retail when it first came out lmao
or even more if youre greedy
I sold mine for about 2500 USD which is insanity. I could have gotten more but I'm not going to push it. Ebay took a big bite out of the profit though.
im scared of selling on ebay lol. not just that big chunk loss, but people claiming its defective and trying to scam you
sold my 3090 on there no problems tho
Yeah, I'm so bad at setting a price I'll take the hit and hassle with auctions and auction fees. At least I know I sold it without directly exploiting someone on a figure I dreamed up.
Oh yeah mate I feel the same. Was sweating that sale; definitely miss the days where I would take my computer parts and build something else or give to a friend. These days, if you're not a millionaire, owning a proper rig is like having a vehicle; you must resell everything because it costs so damn much.
But I do think ebay has pretty good systems in place to prevent that sort of fraud. Still, I avoid that thing as much as I possibly can, I think it's still insane that I bought a card for 1,600 USD and years later sold it for 2,500 USD. Something wrong with that transaction though I ain't complaining in the slightest.
yeah, i'd def try to sell to a friend first
could sell here, someone might pick it up
Holy shit lol
Did anyone watch the setup video yet, anything unique of note? Canāt watch it until tonight.
I agree 100%. I'd have gone that route if I could even if it meant I sold it closer to retail - I did not like the anxiety on the ebay stuff one bit. Didn't know anyone however and I live out in the boonies
I wasn't really frequenting RH at that point but even then I don't know with a sale of four figures. As scary as ebay is I feel it has the best fraud protection as possible and I just want a faceless transaction behind it all / not worry about it after the transaction is done.
The only thing that really stood out was discussion of how to set up virtual D-pad/analog controls for relevant systems. Not very ideal but it does go a long way towards making some PSP/GC/N64/PS2 games more playable
Hell yea!
Indeed. Even for us 4 button people. I'm thinking this device may play a little bit of the xenosaga series and that section kind of answered my questions on how to do that.
That's if the SoC can keep up. Just looking to break up my flip 2 time in that game with some vertical lovin'
I thought the arcade stuff was pretty interesting
I expected to set up controls on a per game/arcade core basis but I was hoping there was a trick to it lol
That really makes me think. Would you be interested in a vert handheld with more of a portrait style screen? If positioned just right, it would make a sweet DS emulator but it could also come in for those analogue controls via touchscreen in a pinch. Never thought of the latter for this sort of thing until Russ pointed it out but I'd be into that if priced and placed right.
yeah anbernic needs to get on that
Iām tempted to play Shenmue on this even though I know the controls will be as awkward as the voice acting š
Maybe even a little more vertical, like a 10:16 or even 9:16 if they could fit it and it does not fall into the landscape vs. portrait mode refresh issues. Point being is that blank screen real estate becomes much less bothersome in my head knowing that it's as much a screen for alt controls than it is for DS games.
the pocket classic screen is nearly perfect
snowcake is neat but since I want to limit my collection of handhelds and there aren't too many vertical shmups I would play, I would probably stick with a handheld with a horizontally oriented screen but tate mode not being too uncomfortable
i.e. something like magicx one35
That does look sweet. Even as it is, hitting the on screen control on this device seems like a very reasonable compromise for the few games that will require it.
And yeah, that looks awesome. With touch functionality as well.
yup that's how it would look on snowcake, flip the dimensions for rp classic
Everytime I hear that consoles name I think it's a psuedonym for cocaine
I read:
"yup that's how it would look on snowcake, flip the dimensions for rp classic"
and I'm like, does Coke really change your perception of things that much? Like it changes the ratio of your handheld it's so good? Should I be re-evaluating this drug?
One of the first things Iām gonna do is run through the Dam in GoldenEye on my 6er to see how obnoxious the various control scheme options are
drugs are bad mkay
The sniper rifle in that first tower will be a perfect āis the virtual analog stick stupidā test
Hahaha wow I love goldeneye so much, itās one of my most played games of all time. Though I wouldnt even consider playing it on this š
The graphic of the remaster amaze me just like 20 years ago
Goldeneye plays pretty well tbh
The cutoff for shooters on this device is ps3 Xbox 360 era imo
Generalizing of course, but ps2 era was when they started utilizing 2 sticks for shooters on some games iirc
wasnt shenmue mostly dpad? with the stick used just for viewing?
a few ps1 games did (alien resurrection at least). and the turok control scheme for n64 games which some other games used (and goldeneye and pd have as an option) is basically dual analog but using the dpad as the left analog
Yeah the stick was to look around, plus the analog triggers were useful for both running and looking
oh thats right. analog shoulder button. so now youd be always running lol
With a dpad? No it doesnāt at all.
Goldeneye requires a well set up stick, that game takes a lot of finesse to play well
crazy how unplayable Turok is now
I guess if youāre a stickler, I had fun playing it on my brick
Itās not even being a stickler, Iām sure you could putter through the game on agent like that but yeah itās basically unplayable imo.
Though I play in 00 agent and do all the speedrunning cheats.
honestly aside from most Nintendo first party titles, it's wise to re-map most N64 games
To each their own
This is like playing dark souls with a guitar hero controller
Iād rather play goldeneye with a dpad than not play it at all
Itās a bonus
I guess
o i was assumming you meant playing it with dpad + a touch analog. yeah idk if id have fun with just a dpad lol. maybe on agent
you need to be able to hit headshots and handshots consistently on the higher difficulties
Fair enough, I usually play on the easier modes these days
I paid my dues back in the days of no save states and no guides to figure stuff out lol
Iāll be dyinggiving it a shot soon enough. But letās be real, even if the controls work well Iāll finish maybe 2 levels before jumping into Marvel vs Capcom. All the other gimmick control setups are just a distraction from the 2D fighters this baby was made for.
There is so much Street Fighter Alpha in my future
Hell yea brother, play what you like to play
Looking forward to MuOS release on magicx zero 28 though. Mini M isnāt quite powerful enough to play perfect dark portmaster full speed.
So looking forward to perfect dark on that with those nice Hall effect sticks.
i didnt realised perfect dark was in portmaster now, thats awesome
As a self-professed āgoodā GoldenEye player (at least compared to me, dying constantly on Agent), have you played the game with Hall sticks? I follow someone online who insists that the OG N64 joystick is far superior for GoldenEye than aftermarket Hall-stick controllers. Personally I havenāt compared the two, and Iām probably not skilled enough to really tell the difference anyway.
I definitely agree with that. Perfect Dark is already way more difficult than goldeneye so even if the stick calibration was set up well I wouldnāt play perfect agent on a tiny device like zero 28.
Though the leaked XBLA port of goldeneye analog feels great tbh. Much better than the awkward calibration of the XBLA port of perfect dark.
Currently I think the XBLA port of goldeneye via Xenia is the best way to play aside from real n64
playing with mouse+keys on emulator felt pretty good once calibrated right but definitely easier than the true stick experience
You can play perfect dark natively on pc/mac/linux with mouse support which feels way better than mouse injected emulation.
Though I still prefer those games with controller, the pc version is so good.
Fun romhack, uses perfect dark as the base game
Nice, they have been working on that for ages
Cool they are getting more single player missions implemented
oh nice lfg
They have a discord and regularly have tourneys
me i'd be like, "wow mvc on the rpclassic sure is fun... but i can play it against people on pc, why am i playing it here"
RA will have an option when integer scaling, to choose to underscale, overscale, or smart (it chooses what it decides is best). The overscale option is what weāre looking for in this case.
I had a RGB30 (4ā 720x720 square screen) and content scaled nicely apart from 16:9.
That was only 250 PPI and with the Classic being over 400, itās going to be fantastic.
lol didnāt realize how quick the board moved on. This is a busy discord!
So what's the verdict now that you've had some time with it? Hrrrmmm? Huh? HUH? TELL US TELL US NOW
Russ' video on the six button just got me primed for more news on this device
Looking forward to the 25th so Americans finally stop getting priority shipping and the rest of the world can move on
As an American, I totally get it.
Oh we'll be bitching and moaning about this shit for years mate. My/our sincerest apologies up front. I'm already sick of my own bitching and moaning about it.
Itās all good, itās a shit situation though I was mostly saying it in jest. Canāt blame Retroid for trying to get as many of these out as possible and prioritize shipping.
Though yeah Iām excited to get my shipping notification for one of my classics soon š
I will survive waiting an extra week for shipping š
TrimUI Brick vs Miyoo M+ vs Retroid Pocket Classic 6
This is the stuff right here / thank you
What's your take?
happy to share! bear with me as I have "barely" scratched the surface as I am starting basic rom sets and saturn is some time away for me for now
honestly it's great! feels better visually and the colors are popping, I am sure the performance will differ when i start testing switch level roms
Russ's video gives me an idea of how much more tinkering you have to do for the 6 than 4 lol, great video
Oh do you just mean because they didnāt properly set up the default controls?
I played it last night a good amount, and it def exceeded expectations regarding power, but Im not a stickler for full frames skipping etc. If retroid pushes out an ota that can somehow quickly change between analog and dpad, Id ask for nothing else
Fairly sure I found the plane my RP Classic is on. It's flying over the Bering Sea now. Landing in Cleveland in about 7 hours, should be delivered tomorrow
RetroArch was not designed for 6 button controllers because they aren't common. So it takes a little work to get it set up right. There's not really anything for Retroid to set up for us since we have to install RetroArch ourselves anyway
Oh I didnāt realize we had to set it up ourselves, been awhile since I owned a Retroid.
Though yeah setting up my 8bitdo m30 in RA was a pain in the ass
I remapped my m30 at the OS level (on iOS and macOS anyway) to basically suit the layout RA wants for 6 button systems already
Since you haven't done it in a while, just a reminder to use the version of RetroArch from the official website. Not the version in the Play Store or from the setup wizard when you first turn on the device
just the way the buttons are identified, I had to re-map them like Russ recommended for them to register with emulators
agree with this, the android guide to use obtainium is pretty good on that end
Is that what Russ recommends in his setup video? I've always installed everything manually
his android emulation guide has a list of what to use play store for vs obtainium, you could install manually but obtainium makes the process of updating manual installs easier, and you can link most github stuff
so this is how I map my 8bitdo to X-input controls (obviously A/B and X/Y are then swapped for nintendo systems)
you wind up remapping the traditional diamond of ABXY into a bit of a triangle that works better for some games than others, and I think with the rp classic or the rg arc where you do have two sets of shoulder buttons there's definitely an argument for just mapping the rightmost 4 face buttons into the standard diamond instead
but that basically makes the default 6 button genesis layout work for both my m30 and my dualshock layout gamepads
Is this the reviewer version vs release version?
nah they ordered 2
seems like it's mostly on a tilt, same brightness and overall feel when placed flat
Seeing this made me wish it has black bezels as well as thinner bezels. We know the panel can do thin bezels looking at RP Mini screen replacement
same pannels, they just cheap noone binning them
0.0
Anyone thinks Pocket Classic is expensive for $130
Then compare it to https://www.thelightphone.com/lightiii cost at $800
Boosting similar CPU, RAM, Storage & Screen
I love paying $800 for something that canāt even do a quarter of the shit a $200 phone can
That's just economy of scale
I'd love to see production numbers on these handhelds
Pretty sure itās only in the thousands
There UI is less feature rich than MinUI mods like NextUI or PakUI
You can dumb a $200 smartphone down to do the same shit
Id love to see US Order numbers on these handhelds
I mean the whole point is minimalism
But $800 is a flat out scam
150 million Switches in the world. 75 million PS5s. 4 million Steam Decks. But how many Retroid Pockets? Even if you added them all up... (3, 4, 5, Flip, Flip 2, Classic)
Whole point of minimalism is supposed to minimum cost & spending less too. They forgot that
Yup
A lot of people see minimalist as boutique now
Which sucks cuz thatās jacks up the price
new Boutique Luxury market in name true frugal minimal living
It's minimalist because you won't have the money to buy anything else
It should have been $99 phone even less than Pocket Classic for calling it Minimal Phone 3
Oh I thought this was shipping again š
they forgot about me
Theyāre still ignoring Canadians - and only serving Americans who wear Canadian flags on their backpacks when they travel š
6 buttons or both lol
ill get 4 buttons if the 6 button really annoys me for nrmal games
One with a black bezel (imo of course)
Well look at it this way. You can have both if you want without worrying much about shipping shutdowns and tariffs lol
I think the darker borders will give it that appearance, I will compare and present it next to the atomic purple if they ship it before cutoff I hope
Black bezels are going to make 4:3 content look way nicer imo
the screen itself is pretty good, the only other comparison I had IRL was the ayaneo black dmg, which I sold, I didn't feel that the price was justified for what I was going to use it for, and honestly it's not an end game handheld
the classic will serve close to the same function and cheaper to get two than the price of the single dmg lol (well the one i has was the second to last model before retro)
I had to switch from kiwi and I went 6 button, but then switched to PKM for the fun colors and black bezels
https://tenor.com/view/crazy-talking-invetigating-mad-explain-gif-16881825 pretty much like this explaining my state of mind to my wife with 4 handhelds š
I wonder if the dmg has higher binned screens since we saw that pic in this thread of two Classic 6 with the screens looking different.
Not a huge deal though, Iām curious to compare my two side by side when I get them
Maybe binned isnāt the right term lol
I sold my dmg to get this as well. Glad Iām not the only one haha
I mean you're right, it could be a mass production gap, and honestly if it doesn't affect the overall game/color performance it's okay... going to do the same with the second for sure
haha grabbing those screens like potato chips from a big bag
Woo letās gooo
What made you sell the dmg
Thanks for the perspective mate! Can't wait for mine to come in.
Bcz it's the same screen
looks like this guy got the two i wanted
https://i.redd.it/sacpsnefrgwe1.jpeg
see im not the only one that wanted this combo lol
edit: nvm. not sure if its two 6 buttons or 1 6 button and 1 retro
if they made that retro with black bezel id order right now
It was nice, but just so expensive that I felt like I was babying it and not using it as much. This I wonāt care as much to toss it in my pocket and go
ah i getcha
Also sold it and was able to buy this and almost half a switch 2 haha
Damn wish I knew! Couldve traded you with some $ on top perhaps
Its great, youll love it
Ah this was about a month ago
Just when I went to preorder the classic lol
Is it known why those 2 screens have different tints?
You can probably change that in the settings reading through the comments on Reddit
Theyāre really rushing these, so they may just be not getting the same attention
wonder if its gonna cause another screen gate
The retro handhelds hobby overreacting and getting out pitchforks?! Never š¤£
screengate 2: electric boogaloo
Kidding of course. Some of it is warranted
Any ideas how to map san andreas regular or definitive to the stick? I can always play it through an emulator but would be nice if I could play it natively
Isnāt the Android port missing a lot of the original music
The definitive edition is missing some yea. I always listen to radio x and it doesnt have killing in the name and hellraiser
Both great songs, but some of the other benefits of the definitive almost outweigh it
Anyone know of an equivalent screen protector for this guy? the stupid Retroid screen protector is plastic-lined and when i put it on, it got dinged on the edge so it couldn't lay flat on the screen
Screengate 3 iirc?
Anbernic cube light bleed, retroid mini,
Anything that fits the Ayaneo DMG should work I believe
Maybe 4 if you count the rp4 tint fixed on update lol
same screen, right?
That's my understanding, yes
Iirc both are the secondary screen from the LG Wing
i'll order one of those, because the ayaneo screen protectors aren't Prime. I'll report back whether or not that works.
I ordered this, will be here tomorrow
I have one tiny bubble in the one I bought from retroid
I saw that one, but reviews scared me off
I buy games I really really really want. But most AAA games arenāt really āspecialā to me in a way where I feel I need to own them. Not to mention, itās all temporary these days with license checks and etc
Ive always gotten from this brand, no complaints. Just need something that takes the blunt of the damage in a worst case scenario
I got this too, and for the brick and MM+ as well
Especially on the black model. Oh wait. š«
Ironic that someone else just posted their pocket dmg for sale. I wonder if the classic is playing a factor in that.
Whered you see that?
Oh nice, from down unda
quite possible, what I realized is that I had no real use of the joystick and touchpad and once I noticed that I could get same screen and almost most of the computing power to play what I needed it was an easy decision to sell
for the specs that DMG comes with it's a beast, but the screen size for the practicality of the games you can play vs form factor and non horizontal display you'd probably want to split the cost between a horizontal and vertical handheld, but that's just my mileage
I think the price difference vs what you get pays the biggest part
up until now I was holding on to it for niche specs but the price I paid made me realize I'm really not going to get much out of it
Maybe Iāll get one too. Or should I just buy two for the inevitable second classic
Its really what kills it, its hard to justify spending that when a steam deck can be had for similar money, it does everything better except portability and nostalgia imo
Its a 3 pack, for when you inevitably screw the first one up\
Youāre telling me I have to buy two more classics?!
I guess the third one will be the inevitable all black classic
Guess so
I would kill to be this reasonable about anything. Doesn't matter if I have money or I don't have money, I get something like a DMG I'm going to justify that purchase until I breathe my last.
different use cases. but I guess it depends on what you want out of your devices. its the whole "just get a steamdeck" situation where if you just want something that plays everything. thats the best option per dollar. but thats not what we always want lol
To each their own
For sure
No updates to the classic shipping dashboard for a couple days now. Though flip2 was updated yesterday.
The rest of us might have to suck it up and just get DMGs instead š
ngl, I would be like 1000% on board with getting a DMG over a classic....if it had a slider. lol
I dont like sticks on pocketable devices. but sliders are fine.
Oh I'd totally get a DMG any day of the week. It's like the Cadillac of verts.
really wish sliders were the default on devices instead of the switch sticks lol
Can understand sliders on a vertical but can't really agree with this, both magicx handhelds are really pocketable and have amazing sticks. They're recessed enough to not stick out a ton but still have a nice range of movement
more companies need to take a look at magicx - especially for the prices they go for
like I said, default. not that they have to be on every device, but more often than not they would make everythign better.
I said it before but what I think would have been the best but just isn't possible with the Classic? A USB joystick add on that gives you two clickable analogs. Yeah, it wouldn't be optimal placement, but the total size could probably be about the vertical size of a dmg without the analog addition... All wishful thinking though because you'd need a USB port on the bottom of the device, I wouldn't like the bluetooth latency on an addition like that.
I think some of the bigger devices especially with the hall stickst like retroid is usuing as of late are great for the right device. but all the cheapo h700 esque devices or rock chip devices.....most instantly would be better.
personally I'm glad the classic is stickless so I have no skin in this game - I got what I want š
lets just never wish the 3ds nipple on anyone.
well the magicx devices use 3326 and a133p so in that range lol
and you are arguing for no reason because you are aguing the excption rather than the rule.
What are you talking about, I said I wish more companies would take a look at them cause the magicx devices are awesome.
Im talking about the majority of those style devices using cheapo switch sticks that tbh probably shouldnt be on most devices, but slap a slider on it and it removes a lot of the issues. not about the one or two devices that do sticks somewhat correctly.
Oh yeah, I mean I prefer the form factor of the classic over the DMG. But I'd still take a DMG any day of the week, it would just have to be so deeply discounted I don't think it's going to happen.... Definately not now with this Classic release, by the time the DMG gets down to a price I could tolerate, I'd be cradling or looking forward to the Classic v2/v3.
okay, and my point is fuck sliders - look at what magicx is doing. do I need to spell it out any more š
oh yeah dmg is killer, I definitely want one but it's hard to justify
if the stick wasnt sticking out so much it would be more tempting lol
but I guess its not as much of a pocketable device and more of a carrying case device.
Im really curious to see what the upcoming market for these devices will be like.
I mean all the news so far is that this is going to be the go to device for larger vert handhelds. I mean the last year has been really amazing. RP5. Personally, I think the flip 2 is awesomesause. CubeXX. TrimUI brick. The Classic.
I don't think the 557 is going to hit those highs but still early days on those reviews.
Give us the good news and nothing about the bad news
Hold it in and keep that secret until it curdles and you let it out in fits of anger.
Ok
Well
In that case
I meant moreso the american market being cutoff and the impact on how many units they, the speed at which they produce new ones. I genuinely dont know how important or unimportant the market actually is.
Its a good thing I put on that retroid screen protector while waiting for my new ones to arrive tomorrow
Dropped it right as I took the pic lol
Did its job
Dude, lol
I mean it has to effect it to some degree but I'd guess it's all within spec.
Don't drop your handhelds
Sorry brother that must have felt like you had walked off a cliff.
I hate that feeling.
The good news is if it was a DMG your life would have flashed before your eyes
All good, its just the screen protector thankfully
Great point
Itās a shader- Slang_9YearOld_Butterfingers
if it did break tho. it would be a good excuse to get a heat gun and ask retroid to sell you a black bezel version š
install a black bezel screen into a classic/6button boom
I didnt actually get to test if mario kart worked lol
I think Im just not used to the size, like the brick you can comfortably grip in one hand
this is too wide
If it broke maybe someone from the discord would mail out their extra Mini v1 screen after they did the replacement
I got lets go pikachu to run, it crashed on citron but plays on eden
Albeit not fast
Also found out this has a gyroscope
I gotta figure out what PS2 games Im gonna mess with. only 2 atm....
Which
FFX and Boku no natsuyasumi 2.
FFX bcz I wanna see how it runs. in theory it should.
and boku no natsuyaumi 2 is low spec with tank controls and really good looking pre-rendered backgrounds.
seeing like this on that screen prob gonna look amazing.
here's the dc games I have ready for this, which aside from a few like sonic adventure will play nice with a dpad
need to work on ps2 next
Mine isnt as big
But why do you not have sega rally?
haha I thought about seaman but this doesn't have a mic does it?
no skies of arcadia?
it does
stubbs was testing it poorly in the test stream lol
I don't know I missed that one. Though tbh not a huge fan of sega rally 2. Will be playing Sega Rally on saturn and maybe try the ps2 port even if the controls aren't as good as saturn
You also need dynamite cop, its essentially die hard arcade 2
Thought about it, I'm waiting for this mod which fixes the encounter rate š
Please try richard burns rally if you havent, just in general
alright that's crazy, I will add seaman for sure. Does this have RTC?
I assume it does being android and all but I have no idea
also shame on both @frank grove and @summer marsh no project justice? tsk tsk tsk.
Id have to say yes
I actually bought japanese seaman for dreamcast recently for the mic but I need to fix my battery to play it first
seaman will die if the system clock isn't working lol
thats right lol
If youre going ps2 make sure to grab dynamite deka
wonder if it plays re4 ps2 or gc, I actually prefer that game with a dpad š I beat professional mode many times on switch using dpad only
the issue rn is. nobody can say "oh x chip did this well or bad with that game so this should performe like this" when the chip is so weird.
weak GPU but damn that CPU is strong which is kinda important so....
it could have good performance at lower resolutions
or not. and just be a weird chip that doesnt like things lol
man I could not finish that game because of that encounter rate
Same thing in legend of dragoon
gotta love some of these rpgs and their random encounters every other step you take
even final fantasy tactics makes me groan when the next story battle is on the opposite side of the map
knowing I'm in for 3 whole-ass tactical battles that take 10-15 mins each just to get there
I always wanted to love that game but always stall out due to the encounter rate, even when it was new š
Turnip isn't working for winlator but virgl is doing fine
Finally an appropriate pico 8 device for my needs
Is anyone able to try some shmups on it please? Cave cv1000 games such as mushihimesama and Dodonpachi daifukkatsu ?
Despite measurements, this is feeling both larger and smaller than I expected somehow
SP is probably more comfortable holding, particularly if using the shoulders I think, but everything else on the classic feels better for gba surprisingly. Resolution especially helps it because you can use better looking shaders without banding. The plastic is feeling better on the classic and the rumble feels so much better. It's like the difference between a light buzz and a solid rumble
I just love how the oled black bars just melt into the bezels.
I feel like with the shape and size of the device/screen as well as just the base panel color/glass color, the effect works better than the rp5 for things like gbc
In my typical lighting, I found myself preferring an overlay on the rp5 because it looked too awkward without it. But on the classic I'm actually enjoying it at an integer scale even if it isn't completely full screen
yeh thats kinda one of the huge selling features for me on this one lol
Yeah I got it specifically for gb, gbc, and Pico-8
I think black bars on 16:9 verticals can just look....wiiiiiiide.
This is what I'm most curious about too
I'm testing out a couple of games on other consoles just to see how it looks and honestly 4:3 looks much better than I expected
I think the black bezel helps so much for this
absolutely. which is a shame for the classic and 6 button
Something that did surprise me is the start button is on the bottom
default? ew weird....
Still not sure why they didn't put them side by side
I mean it's a non issue in emulators but if you play android games and stuff it may be a problem
bcz it seems the start and select were specifically placed there to factor for the 6 button.
yeah thats what I was thinking.
tbh, I dont know what android games I want to play on this tho.
Super hexagon felt nice
not that there arent any, just cant think of any that I have on my other devices that I'd want or even be able to play well without the sticks.
I believe Evoland should be fine
maybe dead souls?
Yeah I'm trying that soon
tho I had issues with just the button mapping being weird.
Balatro technically works but looks silly
Yeah dead cells works. It seems a bit zoomed out and text is kinda tiny but it's playable. Probably not going to keep it installed.
Should be under final burn neo emulator
If no one tests, mine should arrive tomorrow and I will
Iād be surprised if they didnāt work full speed but nice to see
Yeah. Where it will falter is trying to add a shader
As weird as placing the I/Os on the top
Lots of devices have done that. Though definitely would have preferred usb at the bottom nowadays
Look forward to your results! I was only hoping they would run well, didnāt think about how amazing they could look with some shaders etc
i'd wanna try zen pinball or zen pinball world on this
Iāve ordered a 6 buttons but Iām still hesitating due to the grey bezels. @gritty falcon mentioned in his hands-on video that the ABC buttons beeing concave, their small size (when compared to a proper controller) could be so-so. If any of you has a Classic-6, whatās your thoughts about that ?
I finally got a chance to measure the buttons, here you go:
Six-button model:
ABC = 8.85mm
XYZ = 6.65mm
Four-button model:āØ
ABXY = 7.33mm (same as RP Flip 2)
Anbernic RG Cube XX as reference = 7.81mm
Mine shipped! This was a new level of frantic refreshing with Friday being the cutoff
Which color ?
PKM
I was originally kiwi, but switched to 6 button and then to PKM
Thanks a lot. And about the concave ABC buttons, did you finally get used to them or do they definitely feel a bit small ? I'm agonizing between 4 and 6. I value black bezels with OLED quite a lot (especially with the nice integer scaling possibilities of the screen) so the 6 button thing needs to be actually useful to compensate.
Just learned there is a program to run windows games called winlator. Anyone to thinking in installing the app on this console?
To me, the choice betwen 4 and 6 would be easy if the Classic-6's bezel was black, but it is grey. And no, I cannot aford both. A friend of mine used to own a Saturn console back in the days (I was PS1) but I don't remember well everything plus he didn't own every single game. Among the following , which games take a good advantage of the 6 buttons ?
Albert Odyssey - Legend of Eldean
Astal
Baku Baku Animal - World Zookeeper Contest
Burning Rangers
Daytona USA
Dead or Alive
DoDonPachi
Dragon Force
Duke Nukem 3D
Fighters Megamix
Galactic Attack
Guardian Heroes
House of the Dead, The
Hyper Duel
Last Bronx
Legend of Oasis, The
Magic Knight Rayearth
Mass Destruction
Night Warriors - Darkstalkers' Revenge
NiGHTS into Dreams...
Panzer Dragoon
Panzer Dragoon II
Powerslave
Radiant Silvergun
Saturn Bomberman
Sega Rally Championship
Sega Worldwide Soccer '97
Shining Force III
Shining the Holy Ark
Street Fighter Zero 3
Vandal Hearts - Ushinawareta Kodai Bunmei
Virtua Cop
Virtua Cop 2
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Fighter 2
World Heroes Perfect
X-Men - Children of the Atom
X-Men vs. Street Fighter
For Arcade, I typically would call the 6 buttons "valuable" for Capcom fighting games. But for more frequeltly used functions in other games such as character switches or so, back triggers would be OK. Sorry to put a long list here, but I wanted to put things very concretely.
Iām not a Sega person, but Magic knight used it for sprinting I believe
I was in the same boat as you between a 6 button and black bezel. I ended up going black bezel because I have no nostalgia for Sega. The 3 buttons being a little bigger wouldāve been nice, but knowing the top are even smaller than the 4 buttons being layout makes me feel better with my choice
I have an 8bit do 6 button controller if I ever want to play those
It was a long past few days of debating haha
What made me really doubt is when I made the calcuations for integer scaling possibilities. I'm normally not an integer scaling guy (there are now so good interpolation shaders that it is normally a snobish thing to me) but the GPU beeing weak, when the choice for screen shaders (CRT, grids) gets limited by low computing power, non integer-scaling and lowish resolution at the same time, options get very narrow.
Ultimately my thought is the best device is the one youāll use
To me its always the button layout first. Six button is on the other hand not ideal for other platforms. Black bezel is great but grey bezel isn't a deal breaker either.
The Pokemon color is just too whacky and unique I had to go for it
I will mainly use it for other platforms so four button is a no brainer to me.
I blame Stubbs for making it look so good
We just need someone to make a bezel decal sticker thing to look like the original
ya that works too
Are you getting more than 20 to 25 fps when playing actual game.It loads up sure but unplayable on citron at least not that I expected more but it does look nice on the oled screen.Seems no way of playing with the vram and of course turnip drivers don't work
I have the 6 button one not overly sure about the ergonomics .I get retroid 3+ vibes with this device trying to push it to the max.It has some power but no analogue stick. The device is a tinkerer s paradise and I suppose the amount of effort will depend on what other devices one has.I bought to have a look with a view to selling after a few weeks and that's probably what I will do.Maybe a pocket classic plus will turn up in 6 months with analogue sticks and 8gb ram and maybe next processor up .Price is superb for what you get compared to similar offerings.
Purple is shipping! Got my notification.
You guys making me doubt the 6 buttonā¦. Do I buy a kiwi
nice! when did you order?
Not day one. Maybe a week later?
Are you in the USA
cool cool, excited for you! hoping mine ships soon as well, ordered around apr 18
Just glad to see purple shipping. Was getting worried there was an issue, like the orange mini manufactured with the wrong front color.
Though maybe that'd be nice... "Oh no, my purple is the all black color option I wish they sold!"
yep! looking forward to everyone receiving their units, the dashboard should update as well
The answer is both
now im thinking between the teal, kiwi, and purple....
Spam their emails until they make 6-button kiwi.
I used it for pico-8. Compatibility has been weird on these newer chips because things like Turnip aren't as developed
if i was gonna spam them i would spam for 6 button all black lol
I couldnt actually figure out how to get past the setting up of the avatar part. Ive been having more luck in eden than in citron in general. I think its promising tho that these all at least load, maybe drivers in the future will take it all the way
Do it. Complete 6-button saturation.
You need to have the firmware and keys from the same version number it's quite fussy .
Has anyone got Netflix to work on this device? It says my device is not compatible. Are there any work arounds?
Six color black also
You were right, my firmware and title keys were mismatched
For no drivers or anything like that, its pretty promising
I didnt even mess with performance settings
Lucky you ! šŗšø
That was 1x
I was so sure about the 6 that I feel miserable to now even consider the 4 ! Transparent or teal for me.
.5x
I may be biased...but teal š
Hey guys I've got a quick question, should I be worried that my order is still saying unfulfilled? I ordered on the first day 18th March, is anyone else in my position? I'm in U.K
For SNES, x5 integer scaling is just perfectly perfect for both. But even for GBx we have setups like that which are great. But who wants such borders inside a grey bezel ?
It's on de plane bois and giwls
powerslave used 6 buttons and the shoulders but 2 of the face buttons were for weapon switching which you might rather map to the shoulders on this (really great game tho)
tho i guess if you want shoot on a trigger and strafe on shoulders you might keep weaponn switching on the face buttons actually so 6 could still help
Aweome take, thanks for the impressions.
@merry mango yeah they might as well call this the 'American customers only shipping dashboard'
For 4:3 CRT consoles, we also have such configurations with a great balance of black bars, oversan crop and game size. But such tiny bars will be awful with grey bezel. I even prefer thick bars over that, but I want this slight overscan crop and integer scaling will offer more opportunities for tasteful shaders.
I'm going to have to play with that config. I typically hate cropping.
I guess Iāll have the flip2 to tide me over
Yes. Thatās typically a case where I wonāt feel bad with face buttons mapped to shoulders. Apart Capcom fighthing games where such a mapping comes at a higher gameplay cost, I was questioning about other games for which 2 additional face buttons make a significant difference. If I donāt actually have many in my library, then go for a 4 buttons and enjoy better scaling options!
Is that a crack in the screen protector?
Iām actaually leaning towards teal as well. No bias but it is a very classy and balanced color to me. As a toy, the PKM is great but perhaps a bit too much for me.
@frank plinth
I'm in the exact same situation as you, except I'm in the Netherlands. It seems they won't be shipping to non-US customers just yet
There are some of us here that ordered day1 and hasnāt shipped for them yet
ā¦..or am I the only one
Ok I'm glad I'm not alone
Have you contacted Retroid about this? š¤
what color/config? I know nothing, just curious
Nope
Classic 6 button with flip2 bundle, day 1, shipping to Canada
Flip2 has shipped
Drop what you're doing and reach out. Been noticing you're order has been stuck on placed for a while now from what was shared here on discord
maybe because canada?
Oh is that it as well? Yeah nevermind. My American ignorance showing through.
I think they're trying to get all the US orders fulfilled before the tariffpocalpyse
Yup. You are correct.
atomic purple shipped! dhl
nice. Ive slowly started liking that one more and more.
looks pretty good! specially the dark bezel for this option without any real darker options
At least with a black bezel, gbc is looking amazing
I don't typically integer scale but after playing with shaders a bit, I'm thinking it definitely looks better scaled and I'm using the lcd2x gbc shader
Careful with grid shaders. I see many pics where the grid is independent/misaligned with pixels. And thatās truly awful. Here, I guess that integer scaling matters. With CRT, masks beeing decorrelated from āpixelsā anyway, integer scaling often matters less.
I dont mind black bezels on light units since it looks like an old gameboy colour lol. but yeh lol
shippingdelaygate
Yeah that's why I'm doing an integer scale
I'm pretty happy with the result
I'm considering adjusting the contrast or something to make the black darker but it does help with the illusion of the bezels disappearing
yeah someone posted a good list of interger scaling with possible overscans for a good chunk of the systems.
I think looking at it in person gave me a different impression than the charts
4:3 for example actually looks so much better to me in person than the charts led me to believe
4:3 looked like it was gonna be good to me anyways.
4x interger with a minimal overscan? perfect.
for ps1 anyways.
I usually use duckstation as well.
but I dont recall if it has good shader support on android.
Nope
yeah thats the thing....lol
I don't usually use shaders for psx
I might use crt for it.
With me doing a very limited setup on this handheld though it's a bit odd that's like the only non-retroarch emulator
but I dont recall how the settings in RA are compared to standalone duckstation
Im gonna be using dolphion and AetherSX. so it wouldnt be standalone, but those are only running minimal games.
I mostly need to set up hotkeys
I'm only going to play like 4psx games so manual config for each isn't an issue
I might have more....but I dont recall of the top of my head.
I have my rp5 for that. I just like to have a couple arcadey titles on hand like pro skater 2
i like using shaders for a lot of ps1 games. upscaling can look good but for games that mix 2d and 3d assets it can be really jarring and they dont blend well. shaders are better for those games
I love me some native resolution chunky polygons š¤
Oh, any key words to search for that list? Would be awesome to see
I'll just repost it. I copied it bcz I knew I'd forget
- PS1 / Saturn : 320x240 INTx4 (5 pix overscan crop both sides with 6% horizontal bars)
- Genesis / NeoGeo : 320x224 INTx4 (5 pix overscan crop both sides with 9% horizontal bars)
- SNES / NES : 256x224 INTx5 (4% crop with 4 pix overscan crop each directions)
- GBA : 240x160 INTx5 (2% H and 13% V black bars)
- Gameboy : 160x144 INTx7 (5% H and V black bars)
- NeoGeo Pocket : 160x152 INTx7 (5% H and 1% V black bars)
Cool, thanks!
Finally got my Classic-6! Currently setting it up now.
the 4-5 pixel overscan equates to really only losing 1 actual row of pixels for most these systems.
enjoy!

That was me I beleive š I had to calculate things for choosing between black and grey bezels. Black bars beeing often very small, Iām currently leaning to black thus 4 buttons.
And these are supposed to have the same displays, right?
I dunno why my eyes play tricks on me, but the Classic looks slightly smaller in every side by side shot I've seen.
Think it's just because the darker background on the dmg is blending into the bezel
classic dont have sticks
so it can be smaller
oh youre talking about the display....
probably lol I just made sure to copy it for when I go to use mine bcz those interger scaling numbers looked good in theory. minimal overscan cutoff.
its all the same LG wing Screen
the dark screen on the DMG rn makes it harder to tell yeah. but thats kinda a good thing. lol
Is this a matte screen protector? Looks good.
I don't miss the DMG I don't miss the DMG I don't miss the DMG
Yeah the screen is the same just more real estate on the body with the knob and what not
Overscan are expressed in terms of the OG console res. So 4 pix overscan crop corresponds to 20 pix on the actual pannel. Thatās 2% each side, fair below the usual tolerance. I used to write 4% but I donāt remember why. Was that 2+2 ? The percentages are anyway only indications. What matters is the pixels.
According to my calipers, classic is 89.8mm wide and DMG is 91.6mm wide
oh well hmm....I'll have to see how that affects certain games.
No screen protector, just the angle/lighting
most should be fine tbh. but I'll see.
The yellow looks amazing.
Is it just me or does the DMG screen look more vibrant though?
I know someone posted a pic of two Classics that had quite different looking screens so we were wondering if there was a lot of variations - possibly due to these being cheaper ones that didnāt quite pass qc
In person, is the yellow like this or is more flashy/bright ? Because I like that more than the official picturess.
unless retroid managed to really fake their real comparisson shots. the yellow should look like the pokemon gba lol
oh here's the pic of the Classics with the screens looking different
Very few TV used to display the extreme 4 pixels back in the day. The games were not designed to display anything useful here. To me, having such a crop is even better than none because it enlarges the game display.
The classic was set to a lower brightness in that pic
Looks a bit warmer next to the DMG.
It's slightly more orangey in person
In my units the DMG has slight green tone and classic slight magenta
Neither would be noticeable on their own
Might want to check color temperature settings on Android too.
interesting, i wonder if that's similar to the other classic with the same green tone vs pink
I set it to standard and natural before taking pic. It does have enhanced color mode and a color wheel for tint if desired
looking good as else, honestly it could be affectd by software as well?
In 'screen enhancement' color mode the colors clip a bit. If you want super saturated you can turn it on but it's not necessarily 'accurate'
makes sense, standard is good for most usage then
By tweaking the color wheel I can essentially match them
There may be slight variation by panel, but you can probably make them look similar with slight tweaks on the display settings page
I don't have enough money to buy multiple DMGs or classics so
lol
that's the best I can do
cool this helps thanks, stupid question, retroid doesn't have the overlay like ayaneo right?
I mean this is the best you can do color wise and it really is personal preference to fine tune
There's the 'extra dim' option you can add to the pull down which afaik accomplishes a similar thing by overlaying the screen with transparent black to lower the output.
FWIW pocket DMG never really needed 'aya brightness' like the EVO did, this panel gets fairly dim without any help.
same story on classic
yep the built in screen brightness slider does the trick
It looks like the buttons on the DMG are also slightly larger, yeah?
8.36mm vs 7.33mm
so yeah, about 1mm smaller
I mean, I won't be replacing my DMG with the classic, it feels way better, but we're also talking 3x price (or more now).
For non-insane people...
Liking that bootay
Is it more like mustard yellow or canary yellow ?
I just bought a DMG while my Classic 6 is in the mail, so I guess Iām just as insane
I think this is fairly accurate (assuming your viewing device is reasonably accurate)
Thanks. Iāll have a look on mu calibrated screen (not my iPhone).
Any settings yall have messed with that you like? Android, individual emulators, etc
im just wondering if using android on this is annoying at all lol
Eh, speaking from having the DMG for 4-5 months the screen is big enough and high enough resolution that using touch isn't too bad
did dmg have a linux build?
think it was only android
Should note thatās mostly due to Android tinting everything to the background color, but you can change the menu colors to a different color in the background. Iāve got mine with one of the gray options and itās actually really surprisingly less red than I thought.
@gaunt cargo I did notice that the screen rotation looks to be good on the release unit for the Classic. I saw it menitoned in the first look that there was weird rotation but I didn't see any of that during my setup. Probably the only way I could tell it was native horizontal was the screen tearing when scrolling in Chrome.
I don't think I really saw any egregious settings to change in Android outside of the typical to-taste stuff, like wallpapers, lockscreens, themes, etc.
Retroarch seems to scale weird with rgui driver. I'm not sure how to change it yet, but it seems to not want to use the full screen unless you're in-game with that one.
I typically use ozone. I did find Ozone isn't scaling on this screen
where is the menu color setting? I'd prefer to change it to something less red as well
Settings > Wallpaper > Wallpaper & style.
Scroll down and you can select colors in the "More colors" section
I'm pretty happy with my small setup
oh the color change to grey is so much better, much appreciated
did you replace your launcher to default emulation station?
Yes
After all, Iāve just asked to change my order from 6 buttons to black bezels. My family is unanimous : teal rather than pkm or atomic.
maybe my classic hasnt shipped, for the sole reason of me changing the color
hey if you can get it and you can wait, more power to you
Weired because a few days ago, I was still writing that the 6 was the only choice that makes sense to me š
that happens, up until a few days ago classic 6 was what I wanted and then a sudden hankering of black bezels creeped in so now atomic purple is on the way š
its def the black bezels.......
Yes. Black bezels rule.
the black bezels make sense for an uncertain aspect ratio
Wow itās so nice
But if I could have BB as well as 6 buttons, it would have been great.
yes the screen blend is satisfying, and colors pop with the darker background
you know what to do hehe
Thatās it. The unusual aspect ratio with the integer scaling friendly resolution pushed me towards black bezels over 6 buttons.
I was legitimately surprised I liked the look of gba more here than I did on the Anbernic SP.
ah ill just stick with the 6 button for my fighting games. regular 4 face button (if im having problems adjusting to the 6 button) will just be played on the flip2
Never really liked the xxsp
This was my exact thought. I have an m30 controller and realized the only games that really use it and take advantage of a 6 face button layout, are fighting games. And i don't want to play fighting games against the AI when versions with rollback exist now or i can play on fightcade. There are certain games that use 6 buttons liek Guardian Heroes, but it doesnt need to be 6 face buttons. So I tried playing some non saturn games with the m30 and i realized how annoying that was.
I wanted the six button because I used to play a lot on my Sega Nomad (still works) and replaced it with an RG-ARC, then got greedy and wanted moar Saturn-ness.
i think im fine with the 6 button
I think that despite playing fighting games, he did never touch C and Z. 4 front buttons look enough for him.
Had the color of mine changed from Kiwi to Retro (I live in the US) on Friday & I got the tracking by Monday. Not going to say they are fast at shipping, but I also made sure to include as much info as possible (name/ order number/ request) to help speed up their process
i think its an american thing
I cannot aford what I have to do š
i was gonna buy another one but i just remembered i would have to pay shipping again lmao
For some reason my second one was a decent amount cheaper. I havenāt paid attention to the dollar but the exchange was better
you made two separate orders?
Sad I didnāt order a flip combo honestly & now idk how Iām going to get oneš„²š„²
Yeah of course. I didnāt decide to be dumb and order the Saturn one until we got the surprise confirmation that it ran beetle Saturn
do you remember how much shipping was
or was it a flat fee, no matter how many things you ordered
Well the orange menace is quickly losing the trade war so I doubt this is going to be an issue much longer
4px is $15 cad
i think at this point i just cant decide on teal, kiwi, or purple.
Iāve ordered a few days ago and the dollar drop lead to a larger ārebateā than the Retroid āpreorderā code.
Honestly just waiting this one out
nvm. i have too many toys to play with
My familly (girfriend and daughters) unanimously told me ātealā over purple.
but did they know the significance behind the purple?
Teal looks so good.
Iām excited to play both MGS and FF7 on it as they both feature lots of green/teal lol
i like the purplr cause it at least has some heritage to it, otherwise as pure colors, teal and kiwi are super nice
buuut i think im fine with the 6 button
No. Only me knows about gaming. That was just trendy tastes.
the 6 button gives me a reason to play with it. all the other verticals i never touched again after getting a new toy (ie. rg35xxv, rg40xxv, brick)
although having the rg35xxv in my hands the other day, i love the size of it
I will only have this RPC console. Iāve just sold my Brick, and my RP5 some weeks ago.
whyd you get rid of the rp5?
Too large and I donāt need the power. I donāt care about consoles past (and including) PS2 so it was a waste. Better sell while it still has some value.
Brick : too small š and crappy sound. And not so good screen.
I used my Miyoo Mini Plus though, I feel like all of those ones donāt have the magic.
I really think this might be the one though hopefully Iām not wrong. I know the OLED alone is going to make me love it.
Yeah and while it may be fixed now, MinUI had some weird sync issue with the screen. Games just didnāt look right on it and felt really off
MinUI was not fixed. But NextUI devs did a wonderful job optimizing the hardware. No more latency, GPU acceleration, auto CPU speed scaling for way better efficiency and heat dissipationā¦
i feel like a bezel-less lg wing oled wouldve been the perfect size
i loved the rg35v size cause it was truly pocketable for me. the rg40v just didnt have that pick up n go experience for me.
We need to petition Retroid to petition Qualcomm to release Linux for this SoC
is that up to qualcomm?
They provide kernel support for some of their SoCs
Itās not totally unrealistic to think they would do this
Yess. That beeing said, ES-DE gives a quite good āconsoleā experience and I plan to use only RA on this one.
Im assuming based on the ayaneo dmg and the classic the connector is on the side when in landscape orientation so you cant do bezeless like you can on the rp mini chassis
Nice, thatās the frontend I was going to try on this.
yeah never seen this panel wihtout bezels, so there must be a reason
There were pictures of it and it seems to have a very large connector area. So they cannot do narrower bezels I think.
Or they offcenter the panel in a SP way š
could do it on a horizontal
Just make sure to set it as the default launcher so the experience is very Linux like
like imagine a bezelless horizontal classic
classic 6 horizontal styled after the nomad...
Looks like they could reuse the Mini V1 screen for this model š
oh the buttons look like ms sidewinder buttons edit: i remembered the sidewinder incorrently
obviously I'd want it to be roughly inspired by the nomad but be a lot smaller (the height of the rp classic screen)
bring back the dpads with scrrew in joystick/post lmao
the gravis gamepad!
The sun has risen in China. Which brave American soul is going to try to squeeze in one last order?
Been debating whether or not I really want a blackout flip2šš
Is there still a chance this could be a clamshell, you think?
One of mine has what looks like faint static on a crt display. Itās kind of a bummer. Wonder what could be going on
I canceled mine. 9 April order and I canceled it a week ago fearing it would never make it. It would have shipped...damn.
Considering reordering...
Probably too late now
Better pray everyone doesn't raise prices to offset loss then
Why would they do that
at least I could still order one whenever I want š
Have a sticker
I think I'll have a teal classic.
Cause that's how international businesses operate
Like to keep your employees and profits and pay the same, and conditions the same, you usually adjust pricing when you lose a market
It's not like every market is addressed in a vacuum
C'mon. This is common in non international businesses too
On smaller scale markets yeah I can see it
Like I mean I guess if your assumption is all Chinese employers are heartless taskmasters and will just let people go to adjust, that's an alternative
But most of the time business will change pricing to compensate for lost revenue
Within a reasonable range. But like if the US just sunk into the ocean, world pricing on everything would change pretty drastically. This isn't that bad. But smugly assuming (not saying you) that it's just a thing US customers will deal with might be overly optimistic
It's why trade wars = bad for everyone
Like I'd be upset if the EU changed VAT to 100%. It'd probably raise prices for us
Well Nintendo and Sony just did it. Sony making other regions paying the tarrif cost while they didn't raise US prices yet š
well of course they didn't come out and say that buy anyone can read between the lines
https://blog.playstation.com/2025/04/13/ps5-price-to-rise-in-europe-australia-and-new-zealand/
It's calculated. You take market percentages. Expected loss with additional prices. Compare it to the market that your trying to keep prices low for. Etc.
Yeah just read that
Looks like inflation related
Assuming you can squeeze more profits out of some countries to offset losses in others. Etc
I'm sure the price will increase in US assuming the trade war goes on but it's crazy how companies are bending over backwards trying not to. The US market is massive, US is a wealthy country that loves to buy stuff haha
Tarrifs are exascerbating inflation for a lot of countries
mostly USA though š
The effected countries tho?
Well as @modest mantle is trying to explain this is affecting everyone, even if they aren't directly in a trade war with US
as investors and consumer confidence are rattled there is just less money going around and everyone catching strays
Tarrifs also cause inflation. Heh
and then you have people from other countries waiting for their Retroid Pocket Classics to ship since USA is getting priority š
Market instability causes inflation
Yeah. The point is just that pointing at any country's misfortune in a global market, whether it's internal market issues, or being run by an orange Cheeto, and saying "haha, not us" is just a short sited way of understanding global markets. It's never a good thing for anyone. And I totally get that there's a ton of idiot Americans who are probably posting stupid jibes at EU VAT for years. Not understandinh that it also affects what they pay.
not so much "ha ha, not us" as much as "ha ha, gonna hurt themselves more than anyone else"
I want to be careful not to get too political, but this relates a lot to people who are against all foreign aid. While giving a miniscule amount of the budget to stabilize countries in need can have massive benefits
Oh in that regard I totally agree. Still gonna hurt others. Which is unfortunate. If it could just hurt us I'd be way more on board the sad train
Typical retroid chat
Forreal. Nearsightedness is a world wide plague at this point
Letās go back to discussing how many classics we each should buy
52
All of them
thats just mean. there are americans suffering that cant catch em all.
If they ever refresh the colours part way down the line with a black 6 button....
or at least a black bezel..... lol
Iād love a black classic 6
I caught the only catch them all that matters
And there are Canadians that canāt even receive a classic because they donāt get priority
patience. it will get to canada eventually, and you can get more later lol
dude just buy a black bezel one already, enough waffling š
do a sacreligious Pkmn 6 button lol
Ok. Nevermind. That's Satan's work
It wouldnāt even ship
Just make the black classic, and a pure white one as well
I feel like our time to shine is soon, the shipping dashboard is all caught up and they are one day away from the deadline in china
Terrible opinion šÆ
Never again, after the rg40v
hey is there any Americans still waiting for their Classic order?
Yes
Someone send me the cad files so I can render the classic with full path tracing
pure white is kinda poo. but give it a black bezel and boom, perfect.
I stand corrected, thatās even worse than pure white
Iām not sure whatās gonna reach me first. The classic or the 5090
Only possible issue is yellowing but other than that it looks clean
Glacier white vita was
I was on the fence to get one of these. but no oled.
Only an issue with 3ds
I thought this was the one. Ended up hating it š
Super sp on top!!!!!!!
Anbernic has the chance to do the funniest thing ever
Hot
looks so damn good
we in here
that gameboy setup looks tight as well
got a Flip 2 also, but I'm kinda more into these right now
Mario picross based btw
At least it has black bezel
Need more picross in my life
Guys. I got the best news
hey out of curiosity are both screens on these calibrated the same? wondering if the difference is widespread
How do you feel about the 6 button layout
Calibrated? Not totally sure what you mean
I like it a lot. The display on the 6 seems somehow a little messed up, but the buttons feel good to me. They are pretty small though
Messed up how?
I posted a vid a while ago. If you've ever seen static on a CRT display, it was like that under the image, if that makes any sense
seems like these really are the reject screens which to be fair isn't surprising at all especially given the price. I think this is common in this market
Retroid is never beating the launch issue allegations
look mostly the same š
What colour did you order?
20
59
1
Classic 6
šŖ
Peak
Weirdly enough I like the four button more
Four buttons just seems small to me
It's just a very geometric shape shaped device and the curve of the 6 clashes a little
Sega stuff was always more curvy
I'm interested in seeing which one I end up using more. As much as the Saturn is special to me I assume I'll use the 4 button one more overall
why do i see astrobot lmao
Indeed. I just wouldn't have much use case for six buttons. Not into fighting games beyond street fighter 3 Alpha and MK2
Can't go wrong with both. That's awesome.
Yeah. If I had the funds I would have got both
Had to diversify my panic purchasing instead
you got a DMG you're sitting pretty š
from a technical aspect, the 6 button is "better" by having more buttons and you can do all of your games on it. but.....yeah....that doesnt actually account for comfort of use.
Haha. True. Maybe that's why the retro colorway just doesn't do it for me. Ayaneo just did it so well
Pocket DMG is dope, waiting for my etsy grip now š
Yeah a lot of games designed around a button layout don't feel good at all on a 6 button controller. Meanwhile there are a lot of 6 button games that map well to a 4 button layout - not all, but I think the 4 button is more versatile even if it's down two buttons.
6 button one is unique, I can see how it seems to be selling pretty well
I wonder how my muscle memory would work with six buttons when I've always played on a 4 button controller š«
The curve and shapes would throw me a bit
I ordered an adapter that lets me use my Saturn controller on Dreamcast for fighting games.
Such a struggle to play soul calibur and doa 2 with it, Iām so used to them on the dc controller š«
DC controller was awesome. How I played so much Quake 3 on that thing I have no idea
Mouse and keyboard functionality on that console was a game changer.
But the controller was still great. Vmu and all
oh i forgot about switch 2. guess im not getting another classic lol
Itās a great controller aside from the dpad. Quake 3 was awesome!
I have my Dreamcast connected online via DreamPI
Hands down an all time favorite console for me. And awesome to hear about DreamPi, would do some long PSO sessions if I could.
wish they made a new phantasy star grpg
Welp, forgot to post this earlier, but finished up for the most part with the set-up.
And do not let that title screen fps fool you, because this is definitely not one of the games that would potentially run well.
so...it runs as well as a 3DS? lol
standard gamefreak 3D performance.
Not that I wouldnāt have advised against it beforehand, since I didnāt expect it to run well anyways.
I just like using that game as a stress test.
or wait is that a switch romhack? I stand by my statement lol
Nah, 3DS at least would only drop to like 20 fps when 4 heavily detailed pokemon were out in a double battle at once.
This is just what itās like as-is, without using any types of turnip drivers (since there arenāt any that I personally can think of for this GPU) or downscaling.
tbh not what I wanna use it for anyways, but cool.
I like seeing how far ppl can push these things lol
Im really curious about Winlator and what ppl manage with that lool
But that actually brings me to another thing I wanted to mention. While messing with this thing, I noticed that 3DS (AzaharPlus) was performing significantly worse than any other system, even PS2(NetherSX2-Classic) and GC(Dolphin), and while turning off right-eye helps, that help isnāt much.
From what I can figure, itās likely due to the GPU (Iāll need to set up the benchmark tool), so itāll either need turnip drivers that are meant for whatās in this to help optimize Vulkan, or itāll instead need to use emulators that use the CPU more than the GPU.
interesting. I havent messed with 3DS emulator branches theres so many.
Im sure someone will lol
So for now essentially just stuff that has Software Emulation as an option, and maybe Turnip drivers will help for later.
my last handheld being the rp4pro just ran fine without messing around at all with whatever citra version I used lol
I have to say, retroid killed it with this double drop. Happy I picked up both
I dont like their flip line of handhelds personally but cool for those that do.
I will say tho. Oled Flip 2 top screen is kinda the best thing
you really can play anything on it and it doesnt look too awkward. resolution wise. the 5 looks a bit wide on 4:3 or less games but its not as wide looking with a more vertical control layout so props to that.
https://www.reddit.com/r/retroid/comments/1k69qaw/if_your_classic_screen_has_a_pinkish_hue_or_looks/
iirc its often an android issue where the default tries to tint everything to mach the wallpaper background colour. but also not always the entire case when it comes to these screens. I remember the rp4pro having a naturally green tint that they fixed in software update for day 1
but yeah best bet is to do that first.
man I love and hate android for emulation lol
Oh hey, that's my post š
I actually just checked this channel to see if anyone was complaining about the color tint so I could share my post lol
Normally I use dark mode on everything so I've never really paid attention to that setting. And when I went into my settings to fix it, I didn't realize I could scroll down in the wallpapers setting. It took me longer than I care to admit to find that setting š
Oh man, looks like the Android build already accommodates a left analog stick
So that they can sell us that updated version in a year or so
Will 100% upgrade if de minimis comes back
You can go into Settings > Handheld Settings > Input and enable virtual joystick. This turns the dpad into a joystick for games that don't allow you to remap the dpad to be a stick. When you enable that, the dpad inputs show up in the gamepad year as a stick input
Given that there are quite a few peeps here who got theirs, it's time to move discussion on this handheld to its permanent home: #1364830626557071381
sorry for the wait
Iāll stay here cause mine hasnāt shipped
